The Story: Came here for my boyfriends birthday celebration.
Food:
I enjoy their food. The fish is fresh – I know for a fact that the owner goes and gets the freshest fish super early in the morning! I'm not a big fan of their bread but I'm not here to eat bread. We both got the New England clam chowder – it was excellent! The muscles were HUGE and extremely tasty. I got the Chilean Sea bass – delicious.
Decor: I know they have an outside dining area which is nice. The inside is cozy but a little too dark for my taste.
Price: Dinner for two will definitely run you over $125 without tip. So definitely not something a regular person can do every night.
Service: Excellent Service – they were attentive and very nice.
Parking & Finding the Place: About 1 block from the Saddle River Road exit from Route 4 West. Can't really miss it. Has their own parking lot.
Additional Thoughts/Tips:
Nice out of the way find in New Jersey! Classy decor, very welcoming and friendly service, I was greeted with a bowl of olives, olive oil and bread, nice introduction to the place! Great menu with variety of seafood and non seafood items. I went with an appetizer if a variety of Mediterranean spreads and warm pita. Very unique, I have not seen that before. My entree was a seafood paella with lobster halibut and shrimp!
Let's start with the alcohol. Most important thing to get right. Great job Oceanos, that you are spot on. Perfect Cosmo. Nice wine selection. They also have a bar, so you can get drinks before your dinner if you like.
They have really great fish. Expensive. White table clothes, the whole 9 yards for service. Elegant atmosphere. Very handsome manager. Wait? What?
Pass on dessert.
Last night I finally had a chance to scratch Oceanos off my Yelp bookmark list. I had heard considerable positive feedback about this restaurant and the quality of their seafood in general and I just had to give it a try.
Upon pulling into the parking lot, the cars parked within would seem to indicate a high profile clientele (I was parked next to a McLaren and a Bentley). I had reserved a table for an early dinner and we were promptly seated after walking in.
The Atmosphere:
As expected, the interior of the restaurant was clean and formal. The servers and staff were very friendly, attentive, and courteous.
The Food:
We ordered Crab Cakes and one of their specials, seafood bisque as appetizers. The portion sizes were generous, however, I found the quality of both dishes to be average at best. The "Seafood Bisque" tasted and appeared so similar to a lobster bisque it should have labeled as such; not at all what I was expecting. For our entrees we ordered the grilled Chilean Sea Bass and another of their specials, coconut crusted Mahi Mahi. I found the Grilled Chilean Sea Bass
to be satisfactory, moist, and lightly char flavored by the grill. It was certainly the best food item we ordered. The Mahi Mahi on the other hand was not at all what I expected. It was overly breaded and the fish itself contained the bloodline (only visible after cutting through the thick coconut crust). Overall I found this entree slightly overcooked and dry, reminiscent of an overly crusted coconut shrimp dish you might find at a far less prestigious restaurant.
Conclusion:
Although I found the atmosphere and service to be excellent, I found the food to be anything but. When dining out, the quality of the food is key to me.. There are several other Bergen County seafood restaurants at this price point that rate highly across the board. I suspect the clientele at Oceanos consists mostly of established regulars who have been customers for years and they habitually eat here to see familiar, friendly faces. For now, I will stick to other seafood restaurants in the area.
*olives (yo, these olives on the table are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apparently they are grown on an "olive farm" back in Greece, where the owner of this restaurant has land. Anyway, these olives are so meaty, so juicy and the simplicity of the flavor is great. It's not drenched in vinegar and oil. I ate almost the whole plate of these)
*zucchini and eggplant chips (they were alright, huge thin slices of veggies that were battered and fried; the tzatziki dip needs help, it was not good at all and made the veggies taste bitter)
*mussels lyonnaise (ok, these mussels were HUGE. super meaty and I really enjoyed the broth, this app could have been great as an entree served with some garlic bread)
*chilean sea bass (it was alright; I was not blown away by this at all; they achieved a great sear on the skin but it tasted kind of bitter; the fish itself was alright, I was expecting the meat to be sweeter; vegetable pilaf was probably the best thing on the plate; the description of this dish sounds better than it tastes; disappointed and not worth $35)
This place is super cute and quite romantic. Loved the service and the complimentary valet parking. Food is decent and very overpriced for what I think you're getting in terms of flavor. Despite this place labeling itself as Greek, their menu does not represent that at all. It's more American than anything else. Don't think I'll be back.
If I could give more than 5 stars, I would.
I wanted to write an update just to say that Oceanos has some of the most honest employees I've ever encountered.
I made a reservation for 9 people and forgot about the added gratuity for large parties. We left before they could let me know, but when I checked the next day, they had corrected my mistake for me right away.
Thank you, Oceanos. Great food, great service, and amazing business.
If you haven't tried this place, you need to get there ASAP! This is such a delightful seafood restaurant. Everything is freshly prepared in a way that really works. I took one star off because one Saturday night that we made a reservation, we still ended up waiting for over a half hour in the extremely crowded bar area. I understand that it was a Saturday night, but like I said – we had a reservation.
The food here is just amazing, though. The scallops are so big a juicy and they just melt in your mouth. I once had the soft shell crab special and I couldn't get enough of it! It was so good! The seafood is always fresh and always delicious. I've heard the bar is really fun to hang out at, too. It's always packed on weekends.
Beautiful restaurant, above average service and great seafood. We ordered the oysters, grilled octopus and calamari for appetizers. Generous portions for all of the appetizers. 7 people shared 3 appetizers and it was more than enough. The octopus was my favorite and the calamari was really good too. They bring olives and a basket of fresh bread as well.
The menu has a lot of options including fresh salads, steaks, seafood, whole fish and a raw bar. I ordered the grilled lobster which came with French fries AND asparagus. You can add jumbo lump crab meat stuffing for an extra $19. The actual dish was enormous but there wasn't a lot of lobster meat once I cracked it open.
The entire staff is friendly and the service was superb. I enjoyed my food but the rest of my boyfriends family wasn't entirely impressed. I tried the stuffed shrimp my boyfriends mom ordered and I didn't care for the flavor either.
