My husband and I had a hankering for sushi so we decided to go back to this place in his old neighborhood on the upper east side. The waitstaff wasn't attentive as I would like cuz our waiter was also the bartender. We had sushi and sashimi which was great except the wasabi wasn't spicy enough. The tuna appetizer with the caviar was okay except the ponzu sauce didn't go well with it. I don't know if I would go back to this place since there are other sushi places in the area.
Pretty good sushi for the price, they don't skimp. The chicken negimaki was also very good.
Went here b/c it was close to the movies and also since Ooki sounds like Aoki. Got the wasabi lobster roll, while my friend got the sushi combo (3 sushi rolls, plus miso soup). My lobster roll was pretty good, with large chunks of avocado in it. The lobster meat was eh. But can't complain it was only $8. We sat at the bar, which was def. less than exciting.
Solid sushi at very reasonable prices with some interesting special. My only complaint is that they do not have Sapporo draft but they have the oversize bottles so that makes up for it. Solid 4. The best Sushi option on 3rd Avenue between 96th and 86th.
A little far up in the Upper East Side, but other than local watering holes, I could not find another eating option in a 5-7 block radius from where I parked so we opted for Ooki Sushi.
The restaurant is run by Cantonese people, so I was wary about how authentic the sushi rolls and entrees would be, but I was decently surprised.
The decor is reminiscent of the late 1990's when Asian and Asian Fusion restaurants started gaining more traction, and you can tell that the owner did not do much to update the restaurant space.
There's a relatively bigger restaurant with plenty of tables, a sushi bar, and bar.
We ordered a few sushi rolls, salmon teriyaki, and ice cream tempura.
One thing to note is that the kitchen pays attention to food presentation, which is always a plus. Even though, the presentation cannot compare to that of Massimo Bottura's but at least they give it a shot.
The salmon teriyaki was a huge portion of salmon steak- very much appreciated.
The ice cream tempura was too doughy and flakey.
Came in to eat here. Derek was my waiter.
Me: "do you have herbal tea?"
Derek starts laughing. He then hands me a cocktail menu.
"We have green tea. Or, would you like Earl Grey? Cinnamon Apple Spice?"
Me: "oooh, I would love a Cinnamon Apple Spice."
"No, we don't have that."
Fuck you, Derek.
A solid option north of 86th street.
I live nearby and have been here twice for dinner. My girlfriend and I have been impressed both times! The restaurant itself is well maintained, and the casual setting is welcoming. Our experiences with their staff have also been pleasant.
Our most recent visit was this past Friday. We started with the pork gyoza, which was very good. Our entrees consisted of a myriad of sushi, including the California, Alaska, "Sweetheart," and spicy tuna rolls. The sushi tasted fresh, and the portion sizes made for a filling meal. The price per roll was on par with other places I've been to in the area.
I recommend coming here if you're looking for a casual lunch or dinner consisting of tasty sushi. We'll definitely be coming back soon!
I use to order from here all the time when I worked in the area. Their $8.50 lunch special for two rolls and a choice of miso soup or salad was a steal. On top of that, they were easily one of the better sushi joints in the upper 80's (east). Their spicy salmon roll was also my favorite ever, and I've pretty much been craving for a spicy salmon roll from Ooki for the past two years. I finally decided to take a 20 block stroll up to 88th street last night for dinner at Ooki, and was somewhat disappointed. The spicy salmon itself still tasted the same, but the quality of the rice seem to have gone down. Or it was just a bad day? Either way, the rice wasn't sticky and was quite hard – you know, like, chinese food rice. What else did I have… ooh, their Kani Salad. Yikes. It was bad. So-bad. It was a citrus-sy kani salad with a small mixture of seaweed salad inside. I don't know? Is that just them being innovative, or a way for them to save money on imitation crab meat? It was also easily one of the smallest kani salads ever. I felt sort of ripped off paying $7 at a regular sushi joint for a 2/3 kani salad mixed with seaweed salad. What also made it worse is the fact that I am not a fan of seaweed salad. Aside from the few rolls that I have no complaint about besides the rice, my table also had a sushi platter. Same thing, the rice was no bueno. The fish was also eh.. … .. I guess it wasn't bad, but it was definitely not at the right temperature. How do I explain it? The fish actually tasted fresh, but just a tad too warm that it felt quite disgusting when put in my mouth. Does that even make sense? I don't know, Ooki is no longer convenient for me and it failed me after two years of not having their food. Doubt I'll ever visit again.
