Opa Souvlaki

“It looks tiny when you walk in, but they have a big seating area around the back with lots of plastic grape vines and Christmas lights.”

“But the lemon potatoes aren't the best in the neighborhood, and the skordalia had a high potato ratio seemingly intended to appease the garlic-phobic.”

“Just grabbed a souvlaki for take out but OMG I am still dreaming about how delicious it was!”

  1. I really can't say anything that I have not said before, they gave me old meat again for the third and final time. I actually had to go home and re heat it. If I could give a zero I would. If you can't figure out how much meat you should shave off after the first 30 times you should just quit.

  2. The sit down dining isn't mind-blowing, but you can't beat the cheap gyros, especially for take out. Big portion and a small price tag with tons of flavor.

  3. Whatta spot! Walked in after it said #1 Gyro on GrubHub in the window. Owner said, would you like to sit in the back where it is aircondicioned.  Sure.  The back is GREEK FANTASIA a whitewahed Greek trip to an island right in Astoria.

I was the only diner and the waitress(owners wife?) was nice. A small cup of lemon soup($2.75) was good.

The gyro($4.95) was amazing. Packed full of meat- red cabbage, onions, tzatziki, great grilled pita. Party in the mouth.  Sitting next to the lovely garden- OPA!

  4. $10 for a huge vegetarian platter consisting of a Greek salad (I always replace it for a Horitaki salad), a spinach pie, and lemon potatoes.

    LITERALLY THE BEST THING EVER.

    I love this place.

  5. So, the place looks pretty uninviting from the front. Once I walked in to order food to go, I see since 1969 on the menu, awesome, forty years of tradition must be good? I thought it was OK at best.

    The food:

Spanakopita- the famous Greek spinach pie. It irked be that they nuked it. The flavors were just OK, it felt greasy and kinda sad really.

Souvlaki Lamb on pita with tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce. The pita was nice, but the lamb meat was too damn large. These were huge chunks of lamb inside a sandwich like pita? It didn't make sense to me, also the lamb was on the tougher side.

Greek Style French Fries- the fries were kinda boring really. They were also greasy to boot. The fries were soft like baked potato and not crunchy, boooo.

  6. Called in a order for pick up.
My usual chicken souvlaki with onions, toamato, lettuce and xtra sauce with an order of hand cut potatoes. I will say i dont always get french fries to go but i was craving them so bad. Anyways the chicken souvlaki was delicious, nice bite size chunkcls of  chicken with good seasoning.  I was dissapointed the fries were soggy but i supposed thats my fault because we all know fries get soggy anytime you order them as a togo item
In addition. The fries had too much oil, as they were probably not drained properly of the oil in which they were cooked.  For the next time i say skip the fries and stick to lemon potatoes a far better option.

  7. I have to pay attention to my own reviews, at least for a few seconds. The donner combo provided a massive amount of pork, and once again I was impressed by the tzatziki sauce. But the lemon potatoes aren't the best in the neighborhood, and the skordalia had a high potato ratio seemingly intended to appease the garlic-phobic.

I like the friendly vibe, low prices and late hours, so I'll be back.

  8. This place is awesome!  Excellent Greek food. The calamari is top notch. Large cut pieces, Juicy, moist, fresh and perfectly lightly fried.  Love it.  Mama and baba really enjoyed their gyro….mama's crispy pita request came out perfect.  My sister's charcoal grilled Htapodi (octopus) was pure heaven and great satisfaction.  My lamb entree was a huge portion with potatoes, salad, pita bread, tzadziki, and 2 lamb souvlakia.  The dish was extremely tasty and lamb cooked medium….soft, moist, and juicy.  Their house wine is light and tasty, and served in an old school copper carafe…..so cool.  Great value of fresh food for the money.  Relatively cheap considering NYC.  The place was very busy for Sunday evening and apparently they're always busy.  No surprise there!
The service is great too. All the ladies are very friendly and fast.  Even the owner who is the chef/host/waiter came out to serve us our plates and check on us!  He specifically addressed mama, the eldest lady at the table. That's class, love of hospitality, and a true gentleman!!!  Bravo sou kyrie….!   !
