So much amazingness in one night. Where do I begin? My two friends and I ended up here for dinner unexpectedly on a Saturday night because our other reservations had fallen through. A frantic yelp search led us to this brilliant establishment! We called ahead to make sure they would take us and they were very accommodating for our last minute reservations.
Upon walking inside, we were immediately impressed. The unique decor and dim ambience is definitely notable and sets the stage for a romantic evening. (Great for date night). We opted to sit upstairs and the views were beautiful, even on a rainy night.
Food-wise we ordered the spicy tuna appetizer…. Which was probably the only mediocre aspect of the meal. It came as three small dollops of the spicy tuna over one giant sheet of seaweed. Splitting it in three was a little awkward as we had to try to tear the sheet of seaweed apart; also, the tuna itself lacked salt and flavor. The main course, however, redeemed the rest of the meal. I had the scallops wrapped in filo, my friend had the short ribs, and my other friend had the tuna steak over squid ink pasta. All were very delicious and cooked perfectly. Portions were also adequate. For dessert we ordered the chocolate mousse cake, pine nut tarte, and creme brûlée (3 ways- passion fruit, coffee, and plain) to share. They were all delicious, although I feel the portions could have been a little bigger (but that's just my inner fat girl talking).
When we were leaving, one of the valet parkers even gave us an umbrella to use to walk to our car (even though we didn't valet park). The staff is wonderful!
Overall a great venue to spend a special evening, and well worth every penny.
There is one highlight I would like to mention about this place and that's the view. If you sit by a window table, you get a near panoramic view of Manhattan from across from NJ. While I have not been to many of the restaurants in this area, I have serious doubts that you could beat this view from the Hudson River from the NJ side. The interior decor of the restaurant is beautiful and modern and it's not often you find a place like this in the suburbs. For a view like this in Manhattan, I could imagine that you would pay at least 2X of what you pay for food in this restaurant.
While I much to rave about the view, the restaurant isn't without its quicks. The background music is top 40 music (say….Rihanna and Maroon 5?) which doesn't mesh. The food is about 3* in my books. I had the tuna steak (Ahi preparation) and the seafood salad. There was nothing to rave about the food, but it wasn't poor enough for me to criticize this establishment.
In my opinion, I suggest Orama as a spot for you to go drink and have a few appetizers. This would be a very cost efficient way to take advantage of the fantastic view (especially at night).
Absolutely gorgeous view! Restaurant is beautiful! There are two floors – first floor you can order tapas and main menu – upstairs you can only order from main menu – I would definitely recommend eating upstairs – view is exquisite! For dinner I had the salmon with stir fry vegetables which was wonderful! Fish was cooked perfectly – for dessert I had the chocolate banana tart which literally melted in your mouth – service was great – definitely a place to take your honey on a date
Location: Prime. Beautiful view of the New York Skyline.
Restaurant: The exterior does not properly speak for the inside. The interior is gorgeous. The large glass windows are jaw dropping. The stairs. The chandler. The bar. The art. You need to see it for yourself! My words hold no meaning.
Service: When you enter the hostesses are very pleasant! They help with your coats, and get you seated right away. The waiters/ waitresses are great at recommendations. Quick. And good at what they do.
Food: The food is full of character: great presentation, flavorful, leaving you wanting more.
Bar: I'm in love with their specialty cocktails. The upstairs and downstairs mixologist are So Amazing at creating tasty libations.
With all that said: great place for any occasion. Go. You won't be disappointed. Not possible!
I'm going to round up to 2.5 stars, mainly because of the nice view of the city.
Came here with my guy on a recommendation from friends. The restaurant is very modern and decorated really nicely. The parking is valet only and you are escorted upstairs to the dining area by a hostess when you arrive. It was pretty empty on a Saturday at 7:30, which I thought was odd. Our server, while nice enough, was pretty clueless about most of the menu and wine selection. She must've been fairly new, because she would come up to our table and just look at us, instead of asking how anything was or if we were ready for the check.
I ordered the cream of cauliflower soup as my app, and my guy ordered the seafood salad. My soup was very good, but I thought the calamari in his salad was too chewy.
I got the salmon for my main dish, which comes with "mixed vegetables" aka some kind of wilted lettuce slaw that was very unappetizing. The salmon was cooked well, but tasted pretty fishy. I didn't finish it.
My guy ordered the tuna steak because it came with squid ink pasta (his guilty pleasure), but when it came to the table it was over lentils instead. He didn't finish his dinner, which is very rare for him.
We skipped dessert, mainly because the main courses weren't great and when the server came back she just looked at us instead of offering a dessert menu.
Considering I was still hungry when I left, the ridiculous prices here just aren't worth it. You can get way better food for equal or less elsewhere. I wouldn't come back.
We came here to celebrate our 35th Anniversary. We were looking for a place with that "wow" factor, love waterfront dining and the reviews for the food was good. Although the restaurant was mostly empty we were seated along the side of the restaurant (we dined upstairs the more formal restaurant) while we would have preferred being seated at the front window. But Elissa Ung from The Bergen Record has said a better view could be had a little further back to get a true panoramic experience. We were seated in the next to last table and I am not sure I agree. The only plus was we could see the Empire State Building that was having a spectacular light show that night. A nice unexpected plus. The menu was varied and interesting. Hubby had the risotto appetizer while I had the Foie Gras Mousse, a favorite of mine and hard to find.. He enjoyed his very much as did I. For $25 I better. For dinner hubby had the bone in Rib Eye and I had the short ribs, which Elissa Ung had recommended in her review. Hubby loved his steak which I tasted but I found it was ok. In my opinion nothing beats a Ruth's Chris steak and this did not live up to Ruth's Chris. My short ribs over mashed potatoes were pretty good, but my favorite short ribs are either at Tao's East Rutherford or Delmonico's Cedar Grove (both are Bobby Wong's restaurants). I also was impressed in the Record's review bottled still or sparkling water was complimentary . It would have been nice to have nice cold sparkling water (versus the usual $8 a bottle charge) but our server informed us they ran out of sparkling water (at 8 o'clock om a Saturday night?) Which brings us to our server. The young man was pleasant enough and knowledgeable about the menu. But the wait between courses was way longer than it should have been and he only reappeared to inform us our food would be out momentarily. Otherwise he was pretty MIA the whole night. Our bill was $218 (with a shared dessert and two Grey Goose Bloody Marys) which we anticipated. But we also expected a higher level service commensurate with the bill. At Ruth's Chris and Cafe Matisse, two of our favorite spacial occasion restaurants where the level of service is outstanding. Eating great food is a wonderful experience . Great food with a high level of service is what makes a special occasion, well special. While Orama is spectacularly beautiful with a million dollar view they need to step up the quality of food and service to qualify a dinner check of over $200.
