  1. Not wanting to give up on my juicing, I yelp'd the nearest juice haven while Art B and I were travelling, and came upon Organic Avenue.  While the overall star rating is pretty low, I'm glad we ignored that because I was really pleased with our experience.

Here are my top 3 reasons why Yay! I'm a fan.
#1: Great customer service: the guy helping us talked to us about the juices, opened up bottles for us to try and really helped us understand the concept of the store.  Couldn't be happier with him and while we got mis-charged for some gluten free cookies, they quickly fixed the issue.
#2: The concept of the store: Love a place that does organic, vegan, and most importantly GLUTEN FREE that is also Yeast free and Soy free (you'd think that's not a big deal but it is so hard to find!)
#3: The juice was delicious: We had a splendid sweet greens that balanced out kale, swiss chard and collard greens with cucumber, pear, orange and mint.

My only challenge with this store is that the juice is made offsite and then brought into the store in bottles.  I think they use a "slow juicer" of sorts so it is still fresh when you drink it, but there's nothing like knowing that oxidation hasn't killed your nutrients by having vegetables/fruits juiced right in front of you.  And for the $9 or so we paid, I would greatly prefer that.  But all and all, great store with helpful people….Yay!  I'm a fan.

  2. This is spot for vegans and organic health seekers. Decided to try it out since it just reopened. Real clean look and lots of salad to go options. Definitely not a place for morning coffee or breakfast. They have oatmeal, but it has no taste. Everything is pretty pricey, but then again when you get organic fresh food it always is.

  3. Juice bars are popping up every where in NYC, with Organic Avenue being one of the originals, and the most chic.  Organic Avenue gets props for best decor, and feeling super trendy while you are spending $30-50++++.  Organic Avenue can be credited for really bring raw food and juicing to New Yorkers.  An education on juice.  Juicing is about extracting the nutrients from fruits and vegetables, thereby packing in tons of vitamins, minerals and enzymes.  Juice differs from smoothies, which is basically blended fruit and other ingredients.

So why is the juice craze taking off?  Because people have learned about the benefit of detoxing, cleansing, and just good old fashioned weight loss.  One of the most popular cleanses is Blue Print (now owned by Hain Celestial) and widely available at Whole Foods.

So what differentiates Organic Avenue from the other glut of juice joints?  They have an amazing selection of raw foods, and they are well known for the Love cleanses.  Honestly, their juices aren't my favorite. I find them more expensive than other juice bars, but I love their food.   Their raw chocolate bars are insanely delicious (note $8 a pop), and their raw chipotle chia cracker (gluten free) are delicious, but also spendy at $9 a bag.  The smoothies are also tasty, but I find somewhat caloric.   Regarding the juices, Organic Avenue also does not use  high pressure pascalization (HPP – why your Blue Print and Suija juices can last a month!)  My health nut friend likens it to throwing around fruit and bruising it (probably a bit of an exaggeration here).  Ya its not pasteurized (which kills all the enzymes), and definitely better than not juicing at all.

Organic Avenues uses the Norwalk Press, which is the widely acknowledged best method of juicing.  A home version of this machine is $3500 (ekes… vs $300 for the Breville).  The downside of no HPP is that juice doesn't last as long, but really, we should strive to consume the freshest ingredients.  Other juice bars are good – Juice Press is my favorite, Juice Generation (fewer choices), Terri (cheaper but not necessarily organic), and Liqueteria (not my favorite).

People complain about the price.  Ya $10+++ on average is EXPENSIVE… Hence why juicing is now super trendy!  They are high priced/ high margin, but there is a reason.  I have a home juicer, and cannot get the price down to less than $3-4 a bottle (summer is cheaper bc produce is cheaper), plus the hours of labor, washing, chopping, and cleaning my juicer.  I love making my own juice, but I've found making 6-12 juices can take me 3 hours in the kitchen.

*** Note I recycled some verbiage from my Juice Press Flatiron review.
