Loved:
The buttermilk pancakes were on point. I could only imagine how many sticks of butter they use to make them but it didn't take me long to gobble my short stack up!
Along with the pancakes I ordered their best seller dish which was the bacon and eggs combination. If bacon is thick, crisp, and salty it's for me! They really own up to having the best bacon along with pancakes and I'm a believer.
The atmosphere and decor made it feel as if I were at home. So open and bright and not closed up like other places.
Liked:
My scrambled eggs with cheese were good. Nothing out of this world but still satisfying. I'm glad I ordered the bacon and pancakes to go with it.
Disliked:
The service was not good. We were seated right away which was a plus however everything from there was down hill. We went on a weekday and I'm sure on weekends you might have to wait. Our server was friendly but was so slow with everything! From asking for drinks, taking our order, ketchup, paying for the bill, the works. Everything was so delayed. Not sure why because it wasn't busy from what I saw. This is why I didn't give the full 5 stars.
Great food plus ok service. I would come back again.
Just had 3 large breakfast meals for only $39. They were all so yummy. Baconwich, Santa Fe omelette, Veggie skillet and dollar pancakes. The wait can be a while depending on the time. We got there at 2pm with a 35min wait. But once we sat down, both service and wait time for food were good. Definitely would come here again 🙂 I wanted to eat here yesterday but I didn't feel like waiting 45minutes since I was way too hungry.. wish I waited lol
TL;DR – Avoid this madhouse – Go to Brownstone.
I've been here twice since they opened in Edgewater (once right when they opened and most recently over the weekend). Both experiences were horrible. I used to frequent this place when they were originally in Fort Lee, but things have really gone downhill ever since they relocated to Edgewater.
Service is whatever. Friendly waitstaff but food takes forever to come out, which is why the wait is always super long. One thing that really irked me was when we came here over the weekend (on one of the hottest days this summer, mind you) and they told us they ran out of ice so no iced coffee or cold beverages. Um… what? The exact excuse was: "We were so busy that we ran out of ice and the machine hasn't been able to make it yet." I don't understand how it didn't occur to anybody to go buy a few bags of ice when you know that customers would obviously be ordering iced drinks that day. Plus, the restaurant itself was hot, which didn't help any. I have no idea what was going on with the A/C.
We got refrigerated water which quickly became lukewarm due to the heat and then our food came out. I ordered the Crunchy French Toast – which tasted good – but seriously, guys. Can you at least attempt to act like you give a crap about presentation? My food was on the edge of the plate looking like it was about to fall off. I'm not asking for fancy plating or decorations like this is some Michelin restaurant. I'm just asking if the food can be placed on the plate neatly and not hanging off the plate screaming for dear life.
In all honesty, I'm not a picky eater and I'm very easily impressed. But I don't understand why this place has so many customers on a daily basis. Brownstone is a billion times better (food, service, parking, everything) and I will continue to go there from now on. No more Original Pancake House for me.
The Story: After my co-worker Danny P. raved about this place. I have to check it out…because well.. I love PANCAKES! and… end result? this is my new breakfast spot!
Food:
I got a western omelette with a side of pancakes. First – they BAKE their omelette so it takes about 20 minutes to prepare. It was delicious. The pancakes was nothing but 5/5! The fluffiest pancakes I've ever had and it comes out nice and hot!
I would also like to note about their freshly squeezed orange juice… they are really freshly squeezed!
Decor: I feel like I'm in an episode of Hell's Kitchen – they have an open kitchen for the diners to view while your food is being made. Huge glass windows to let in a bunch of natural light. Huge dining room as well.
Price: I spent $37 without tip ($45 with tip) for 2 people. We ordered a specialty pancake, omelette, side of eggs, orange juice, and coffee. Fairly priced for what I considered the worlds best pancakes right now.
Service: Service is on point. Our waiter gave us recommendations of what he personally likes on the menu and what is popular among the diners. Coffee was refilled when empty and he wasn't hard to flag down either. A shame I forgot to catch his name!
I would also like to point out their wait list system! I LOVE it! You basically give your name, phone number and number of guests and they add you on their wait list. You then can check your place on the waitlist via cell phone and they will text you *AND* give you a phone call when your table is ready. Feel free to shop while you wait!
Parking & Finding the Place: It is located in the same shopping area as the movie theater in Edgewater NJ. Parking on top can be a pain but there is plenty of parking below the complex.
Additional Thoughts/Tips: Definitely worth the wait. Do not come here on Holiday Weekends because everyone is here lol
Ohhhh the wait is worth it ! We have been going to OPH for years now , except when it was hidden in a tucked away shopping center in Fort Lee instead of Edgewater. This place was a must go then and is a must go now .
DECOR: since changing locations to the ever so up coming Edgewater, they gave OPH a whole new vibe. The old one was your old school diner-type feel but the new one is gorgeous, hip and modern looking done in all white with multiple cognac, leather , tufted couches.
FOOD: I've never been even slightly disappointed . The omelets are insane. They are baked and fills with tons of goodies and come out like huge fluffy pillows. The bacon is deliciously smoked. The pancakes are super light and come in tons of combos. The Dutch baby is a mustttt try. And currently my favorite after this visit is the GERMAN APPLE PANCAKE: this thing takes about 20 mins to make and is some sort of crazy breakfast hybrid . Think what it would look and taste like if a pancake , a soufflé , and grandmas Apple pie had a baby. That's it. . The coffee is fantastic and always steaming hot . Don't forget to try the fresh squeezed juices .
SERVICE : our waiter was great. I had a party 6 whom neveeerrrr makes ordering easy ( splitting this , splitting that, I want this but it can't have that …..) and our waiter was on top of everything , everything came out correct , and my coffee was hot. And this was with an absolutely never ending crowd.
If I had to say one negative thing, it would be the hour and 15 min wait. However, the fact that every party there was willing to wait tells you something . And since they moved and updated everything they have a cool computer system which not only calls/text you when your table is ready but they give you a link where you can see where you are on the waiting list and how much time you and other parties have waited . So while your waiting take a stroll into the neighboring stores and that hour wait will go by quickly.
I've been going to the Original Pancake house since they were at their former location in fort lee. I like the proximity to my home now that it's located in Edgewater. My two complaints are that they're always packed (small location, long lines). Lately, service has been iffy. I've been there twice in the past week and both times we've had to wait awhile for our server to greet us and today our coffee was brought out with our food, which while not a big deal does make it a bit less enjoyable. The wait time for food to come out, is actually not that long considering how full it is and that people order ahead.
My favorite dishes here are definitely any of the pancakes, they are fluffy and tasteful and the bacon! They serve long strips of bacon, both crispy and soft. Also, their home fries are really good! The coffee, which has always been a favorite of mine, lately is a bit off. Some of their sandwiches are good as well, but their lunch menu is limited. Something else that I like, is that they have a kids menu accompanied by crayons and always accommodate to the young ones. Even offering to bring out plastic spoons/forks for my daughter.
Also, as I was checking in on Yelp it asked if it was a poke stop (wow! Lol), the waitress overheard and mentioned that while it is NOT a poke stop, the owner would like the make it one. I have no idea what this means, but I'm sure that'll increase traffic at OPH.
It's what a breakfast place should be in every sense of the word. Large open space, large portions, friendly staff.
The place is bright and airy, feels comfortable as a breakfast place should. Casual atmosphere really helps you relax. Even with everyone talking it doesn't seem too loud of a space.
The food is delicious and comes in large portions with lots of toppings. The scrambled eggs are cooked well and the Dutch baby "pancakes" are pretty great to try if you never had one before. Don't skip on the chocolate pancakes or omelette either.
The staff is really attentive to the table even with a full house. It's amazing how clean this place is with the kind of food and volume of traffic they deal with.
Highly recommended for breakfast or brunch with friends.
This review is on the service at this restaurant. This restaurant is ALWAYS busy because of the delicious pancakes, but since they have enjoyed so much success the service has really gone downhill.
Last time I was here about 2 weeks ago, I had to ask for coffee refills more then once before I had new coffee. It also should be noted that my visit was during the week not the weekend, so even though it was busy it could have been A LOT busier. I also feel the servers and staff don't pay as much attention to the tables as they should.
I wish I could rate this establishment 3.5, because the food is still delicious, and the pancakes are always amazing, I also love the oven baked omelets, and the original skillet. Though I have noticed the food does taste better during the week, then on the weekend. I feel like the popularity of this establishment has diminished the quality of the food a little bit, as well as, the service. I definitely do not recommend coming here on the weekend.
