as much as i love amarin, ott has made its way into my little foodie heart. both are great thai eateries in greenpoint, but you can't compare apple with apple here. the tagline under ott's name is 'authentic thai cuisine.' note: i'm not thai and have never been to thailand, so i can't attest to that claim, but it does seem so. however, that doesn't necessarily mean 'better' thai food.
lately, i've been checking ott out and have not been disappointed. in fact, i've been on an ott kick lately since it first seduced me the night i walked through its the doors and sat down to my first meal. wonderful service and a small, intimate eating area decorated in classic thai style; it's nice and perhaps is kind of fancy/formal feeling.
all the dishes i've tried so far have been great. they include: spring rolls, koong-gai sub, pineapple fried rice w/ beef, pad thai w/ pork. and mussamun curry w/ chicken (or, if you're ordering take-out/pick-up: A1, E11, N12, N5, and C4). the portions are smaller than other restaurants out there, but i can deal with that (because the trade-off is the quality of the meat and ingredients – you got that one, ott).
however, the one 'fault' i will mention is – and i'm sorry – they skimp you on the rice. i hate to say this in a review, but i cannot overlook miserliness with rice – it offends me. if you order a curry, you need more rice than the mini-box given out. i mean, c'mon! i'm ordering take out because i don't have the time to make my own rice. but then again, perhaps the clientele in the area doesn't eat much white rice (as they offer brown rice as an option) or it's this way to keep prices down. who knows? but i just cannot give the lack of rice a pass and i feel obligated to mention it here.
bottom line: ott is great for both eat-in and take-out. it's very quick with orders and the quality of food is the same (good) for either or. they have many dishes on the menu and the food is tasty. highly recommended (get the koong-gai sub! it will change your life if you've never had it before, especially if you get it at ott!)
Flew into NY, hungry and kinda cranky, my friend took me down the street to Ott. Nice choice! I'm still in sticker shock about NY, but the menu here was glorious LA prices: entrees for about $10, frequently $9. We started with summer rolls (cold rolls) and the curry puffs. The former was what I've had at other places: chewy rice paper wrapped around veggies, with a sweet and tangy peanut sauce. The curry puffs were what I can best describe as a cross between a samosa and a gyoza, both of which are foods I like.
For dinner, we had vegetarian massuman curry and cashew tofu; the server said that we could have both without fish sauce. The portions are BIG. I was honestly a bit taken aback by the size of the cashew tofu, which was good, and the curry was delicious. We ended up taking home plenty of leftovers. Nice.
Confusing: Ott had the tallest clientele I've ever seen. Every dude who walked in was at least 6'1", and 3-4 were several inches taller than that, like, someone you see and then exclaim, "Hey, that guy's really tall!" and point him out to your friend. Which I did, several times.
Good quality Thai. More expensive than manhattan prices which is kind of depressing. The portions are also smaller. I've always looked at Thai as an easy and cheap meal but OTT makes that hard.
I also hate that they charge and extra $2 for brown rice. I just find that ridiculous and absolutely appalling.
Normally, I'm the kind of guy that will eat anything, like I will garbage disposal something just to have the satisfaction of not wasting it…especially if I have personally paid for it.
But in this case, I had to abort the mission on some sauteed vegetable dish because it was simply un-appetizing, over-cooked, over-sauced and tasting like it was past it's prime from the start.
I concentrated on the other dish I got and put the leftovers in the fridge and was like "I'll eat you tomorrow when I'm hungry again." Following day, I knew it was in there, but couldn't get myself to pull the trigger and actually peel back that plastic lid.
My instinct to terminate all leftovers against my gun-shy reluctance to finish off that container should tell you everything about how un-appealing it was. On to a new Thai spot.
