Ordered via ubereats. The tacos looked ok–there was a lot of meat in the fillings. But the shrimp, pork, steak and mushroom tacos were all too salty. The order of guacamole was also a very sad small portion. The taste of the guacamole was a but salty and not at all refreshing as it should be.
I love Ottos! Cheap and delicious food. Their corn tortillas are very delicious. I'm a vegetarian and always get the mushroom taco with guacamole and it's very good. Love this place.
This place is bombs! I've been here a couple of times and their tacos are so good. They are the corn tortilla types with cilantro and onions, more like the Mexican style tacos you would get from a food truck. I've tried chicken, steak, and shrimp in the past. Shrimp is def still my favorite and it's the one I always order although the other ones are still good. The shrimp one is a little spicy, but not bad at all. They also serve guac and chips here. Prices I feel are worth the flavors. This is a good snack spot and it gets pretty busy during weekend nights. Many people come her after bars. Each different type of taco has their own spice and sauce. There is a new taco they are offering now and it's a salami one. Didn't try that tonight. Overall, this place is a pretty solid taco spot. The shrimp one is amazing though, very fresh shrimps. When you bite into the shrimp, it is crunchy. Def have to try the shrimp ones!
Sad face. This used to be one of my favorite quick stop taco spots. Not sure what happened yesterday but my mushroom tacos were super spicy. I was glad I only ordered two instead of three because they were almost unbearable. I decided to try the masa fries. So. Much. Salt. Pretty sure this isn't the norm. I read a review from yesterday saying the fries were salty so I'm guessing it was only yesterday. I tried to get through them but had to dump them after two fries. Three stars because I know Otto's is usually great.
Update:
I remember a few years ago loving Otto's tacos and consistently being pleased. As of my last three visits I've been sorely disappointed. I kept returning hoping that maybe it was just another off day. The taco shells this morning didn't taste fresh and this is the second time in a row my tacos were drowned in a watery salsa. I'm a huge cilantro and onion fan, but piled on top almost like a salad feels like a cheap sub for complexity in flavor and overpowers the mushrooms. Positive: The staff are super energetic and friendly, but sorry Otto's, its time we part.
I moved to the East Village a couple of weeks ago and I've already been to Otto's Tacos four times…
I've gotten the same thing every time I've visited – one each of the carne asada, carnitas, and shrimp tacos. Flavor is on point and they stuff each taco with a generous amount of filling. The salsa that comes with the carne asada is pretty hot, but the other two are relatively mild. They also throw cilantro and diced onions on top, but you can add guac for another 45 cents per taco.
Three tacos is probably enough for a meal for me, but I definitely always want a fourth because they're so good. Only off-putting thing is the price – the three tacos that I get + guac is just over 12 bucks, which seems slightly steep… but obviously that hasn't stopped me from going there with ridiculous frequency.
I came here on a Saturday night about an hour and a half before close and it looked like they were already cleaning up/getting ready to close. We were hastily led to order. The service was terrible because of how rude the cashier was. She just seemed really annoyed that she had to take our order, and was only decent after my friend tipped her a few dollars….which honestly, shouldn't impact the service considering it's a fast casual place…quick order and go/sit.
Regardless, we stayed and ate. I'm glad we did because the tacos were really good! We ordered 2 chicken, 1 shrimp and 1 carne asada taco. The chicken was surprisingly my favorite out of them all! Really moist chicken, full of flavor and just perfect!! The tortillas really stole the show! Usually, corn tortillas are hit or miss for me because I hate when the taco ends up just falling apart in your hand. But, Otto's corn tortillas are amazing!!! Chewy, hold their shape and are perfect with every bite of the taco!
I can definitely admit that there's a reason why Otto's has been making a big splash in the New York taco-lover community the past couple of years…. As Shaji K. said "that's a damn good taco."
I ordered a taco trio through Caviar which, while a bit soggy, arrived at lightning speed (Fastbite). The chicken was solid, the steak a bit overcooked, and the carnitas downright amazing. Even without any salsas, it was really flavorsome and probably the best I've had in a while. When I return to Otto's it will definitely be in-house because the corn tortillas that looks super crispy in images on Yelp were quite gummy when transported. Considering the product and the price point of all it's competitors in the city I would say that the per-taco-cost is more than fair.
It's as I always say, good carnitas makes for happy senioritas.*
*I've never said that but I now I will.
This is where I wish Yelp had half stars because I really wanna give this place a 3.5. I moved to NY from Texas so I have pretty high expectations for tacos.
I got the carnitas and shrimp tacos. One of them sucked and the other was good so that's where I need that extra half star from Yelp! Again, since I'm from Texas, I was super disappointed with the carnitas taco. The meat was super dry, a bit chewy, not easy to pull apart, and somehow super salty. On the other hand, the shrimp tacos were delicious! Packed with flavor, a little kick of spice, and loaded with shrimp! The shrimp one also had this great white sauce that came with it.
Overall, if you come here, I'd say get yourself some shrimp tacos because idk if I can see them doing super authentic carne Asada, carnitas, and etc.
