  1. I stopped here on my way home-I had passed by many times but never stopped. I got the special- a chicken leg and thigh, saffron rice and black beans for $8.95  It was placed in an aluminum container and i ate it there-the chicken could have been a little hotter but it was very good anyway. The meal was filling and the staff accommodating. I would recommend and return.

  2. Was hungry and walked up 9th avenue from 43rd street looking for a "Mexican spot". I have pretty simple needs and don't think Mexican food needs to be expensive or fancy. We spotted OUT and checked out the menu – prices were decent and the food looked alright, perhaps a little dry but ya never know. Also their menu said they had arepas, that drew me in…

By the way I don't consider Latin food to be Mexican food. There is a difference and this was closer to domincan style food with tortillas.

I ordered a chicken taco and a side of white rice and black beans. My lady ordered nachos. As for the arepa, I was told it's on the menu but it's never actually in the store and will never appear 🙁 should have left after that, lol.

I gobbled the taco up, but it was a little dry and bland. Okay at least there's the rice and beans (I thought). Sadly they were even more bland – deadass. I expected the rice to be a little salty/buttery. It was as bland as plain rice out of a rice cooker and the beans were just hot (temperature wise) black beans.

I'm not a salt fiend, in fact for 10 years+ I have not cooked or added salt to my food. It seemed to be a great factor of my weight loss, lower sodium/salt diet.

Back to the review, my food was bland. There was a little hot sauce that came with the food and that was hot and bland like spicy water – no bueno amigo.

The nachos on the other hand were enjoyable, the jalapeños, the cheese guacamole, good stuff there. But as for my food I was dissatisfied, and felt I could have just whipped up some flavored white rice and black beans at home. Oh my.

The service was friendy, but the food I won't bother returning for. Actually I went to another spot up from here – Empanada Mama, to grab a tasty empanada… Stayed tuned for that review

  3. I've walked by this place many times – it's got all the things I like on first impressions.  The place looks clean, the menu looks fairly extensive for a tiny joint, and it's got some of my favorite Latin offerings.  So why not give it a shot?

I did and I can say I was very pleased with the empanadas.  It was warm, fresh and tasted pretty darn good.  Even though the hot sauce they gave me pretty much tore open my intestines and burned my anus, it was still a tasty combo.  The enchilada suizas were also quite tasty.  I could bathe myself in that tasty green chili sauce that was smothered on my meal.  It made the rice and beans taste even better than usual for me.

So what's the problem here?  Well it's not what I call a cheap place.  Granted the food tasted better than a lot of similar offerings in the neighborhood, but this place seriously needs to reconsider its pricing strategy.  Those two items plus a taco for my lady should not add up to nearly 30 bucks, especially when I walked over to pick up the food myself.  I'm all for paying up for good food, but this wasn't $30 dollars good.  Will I eat here again?  Maybe.  I still think about how lovely those enchiladas were.  But I know I can get more bang for my buck with other places nearby, so that's unfortunately gonna be something that weighs on my mind before I head back to his joint.

  4. Lunch special is good…sour cream (which is heavier and better tasting than the stuff Chipotle uses) is extra. Beans are tasty. I have not tried other stuff, but this is a solid place and I would return. Definite food coma after eating here though…so use caution.
