The first couple times I visited this Outback location, I had a really great experience. My steak was cooked exactly as I ordered it and the food arrived hot and in a timely manner. Service was also on point. So when I went back for my last visit, I was disappointed by how much things had deteriorated in such a short amount of time. The wait for food was ridiculous. Plenty of other patrons were waiting long amounts of time for their food, too, so there was clearly something backing up service in the kitchen. When my steak finally arrived, it was overdone, cold, and my maple bacon bourbon sauce was nowhere to be found. My server had to go back and get it separately. He also offered to take it back to the kitchen but at this point, I was way too hungry to risk waiting another 30+ minutes for my steak.
My server was very attentive and apologetic about the whole situation, even though it clearly wasn't his fault. Food was being sent back to the kitchen at a couple tables near me, and many other patrons seemed quite disappointed at the food. I was very excited about this location opening up and it seemed like it was going to be a major standout among the lackluster food options in the mall, but now I'm not so sure. I don't know what changed between my first two visits and the last, but I hope they get it together soon.
Customer service was average. The food was mediocre. Free parking across the street and $3 for the parking lot next to it. They served us the wrong meal 2x but was courteous to apologize and get the meal right.
I would like to preface this review by saying I believe part of the reason my family & my experience was so poor was due to inadequate staffing; therefore, because our server was doing her best with what she was given it did boost my rating from what would be 1 star to 2.
There was a 45 minute wait for my party of 7 (and two children so total 9 people). This wasn't necessarily an issue because with such a large party I assumed there would be a wait. Once we were seated, my nephew (who's 10-years old) noticed the utensils were dirty…not good. The waitress came over and quickly replaced our utensils and took our orders. By the time she had come we were not only ready to place our drink orders but also our food orders.
After some time the waitress brought a few complimentary loaves of pumpernickel bread and our drinks, except for mine..I guess she forgot it? 16 minutes later I received my drink (which was water, not a mixed drink or even fountain drink). 13 minutes after that we received our food. 5 of us ordered steak (myself included) but the other two in the party ordered sandwiches. They both complained their food was pretty cold and their bread had gotten a bit hard. Everyone BUT me complained that the steak was too spicy (I like spice, they don't) and their vegetables (they got mixed veggies) were way too overcooked. I wasn't overly impressed with my meal, but I didn't expect much anyway. I've been to Outback before (in Long Island) and it wasn't anything to write home about anyway.
All-in-all this location has got MAJOR changes to make. I don't understand how in a big shopping center, in the middle of June (graduation season) this restaurant was SO short staffed. Our waitress let us know she wasn't even scheduled to be there that day and came IN which means there would've been even LESS staff than there was! The wait for everything – tables, beverages, food, the check – is unacceptable. Because my brother & his family live in Co-Op City I will obviously be back to Bay Plaza but NEVER to this particular establishment again.
A solid 3.5 stars! The Bay Plaza area has definitely changed with the addition of the new mall. It is seriously a parking nightmare but the addition of the new stores and restaurants is definitely good for the economy.
So the Outback Steak House is one of the new restaurants in the Plaza. We made a reservation for 4pm on a Saturday. We arrived at about 3:40 and the place was packed! I wasn't expecting it to be as busy as it was but totally understandable since it was a weekend. We were seated within 10 minutes. Our server quickly came to the table. We weren't quite ready to order; unfortunately he disappeared for about 15 minutes before returning to take our drink orders. Once he returned we were ready to order drinks and food.
The menu was standard. We ordered the volcano shrimp and lobster as an appetizer. I absolutely loved it! My boyfriend didn't like it so much due to the thick creamy sauce but I thought it was delicious. We both ordered steaks and my aunt ordered ribs. We were all very satisfied with our meals.
I think as long as the food is consistent with the Outback chain expectations this location will do just fine. However they definitely need to tighten up the customer service. While we were in the restaurant there was a staff member walking around on his phone which I thought was very inappropriate. Also our server would disappear for long amounts of time without checking in with us. He was gone so long at one point that I never got a chance to order a second cocktail. By the time he returned we were ready to go. Which was a shame because I really enjoyed my margarita. He also took forever to see if we needed to-go containers. I hate it when the food is just sitting on the table at the end of a dining experience. Even though the place was busy there seemed to be enough staff to allow for quicker service.
Overall the food was great and I would return but I would expect more attentive service.
