My friends have recently decided that darts rule. Darts all day and darts all night. Darts at their homes, darts in my home (What? I don't even have a dart board…), darts on Saturday afternoons when it's nice and when it's not, darts on the holidays when the bars are packed, and darts when there isn't another patron around to be hit. In town for a black tie wedding was no exception- we had to play darts before putting on the duds.
Located in Midtown, where we inevitably end up staying each time because every event we fly to New York for rarely seems to be outside the area, it's a quick walk from most of the big hotels, yet has a cozy, off-the-path vibe to it. Nearly impossible for E 44th, but they did it. It was in Overlook that we discovered we could not only play darts until our arms fell off, but that we could do it in the comfort of a Chicago Bears bar. Hell. Yes.
Da Bears, coupled with… did I mention darts at some point?, yes with darts, a free charging station for every cellular device on the market since 2007, inexpensive prices, and a nice, fun bartender who kept us company, it was the perfect spot to spend a rainy and cold Saturday afternoon. Nicely done, Overlook. I hope you beat the hell out of Kettle of Fish in Bar Wars or whatever competition bars get into.
This place is kind of a dump. I came here with friends for happy hour and we intended on sitting outside. Their 'outdoor area' is basically between buildings on the second floor and it was completely covered, it felt like we were sitting in an alleyway. From what I saw, the place was mostly dirty as was the bathroom that smelled like a urinal. Their happy hour special was 2 for 1 drinks, but they said you couldn't "stack" drinks as in, you can't order both at the same time. The bartender made a big deal of this when I tried to order both drinks at once as happy hour was ending soon, but the server actually brought me two so I can't complain! My biggest issue with the place was just the level of cleanliness and the overall ambiance, I wouldn't return again based solely on this aspect.
Went to a friend's happy hour with her co-workers and was initially turned off by the decor and lack of space…HOWEVER when we went upstairs they had a cozy little rooftop area and also the BOGO HH special. I ordered a Whiskey ginger and the bartender upstairs hooked it up with Jack Daniels, filling it 3/4 of the pint and the rest ginger ale. Was impressed by his generosity and the drink was well worth it. Not the best bar in the area but would come back for the sole purpose of the Happy hour special.
I went a few days ago with a friend, to have a few drinks and have a quick bite.
The place is pretty cool have two floors, the second floor is not that big is they only have a few tables there. But it have a bar there, so no need to go to the first floor for drinks.
The dining room has lots of TVs everywhere, turned to CNN and sports in the day. In the first floor they have a wall that is paint with a lot of cartoon that looks kind of cool.
Me and my friend share some fries and Stay-Sampler.
Fries were marvelous. and the Stay-Sampler taste fantastic.
Satay-sampler: is making of chili chicken breast, Teriyaki beef filet, and bacon wrapped shrimp served with spicy peanut, House soy, and mustard sauces. This is the perfect appetizer to share with another person. You have the option of several sauce and the beef, chicken or shrimp taste amazing. I fully recommended this plate.
The server was great, always on top of our table, double checking if we had everything we want.
I used to come here all the time, practically every Tuesday for karaoke. My favorite 2 people who worked at Overlook were Clarence (door security) and Carlos (best bartender ever who can make a mean Shirley Temple… You would think that would be an easy drink to make, yet most bartenders are not able to make it perfectly). They are both incredibly easy to talk to and get along with, as well as very sweet. I was sad that didn't see them when I came to Overlook recently with a friend- They may not even work here anymore.
Anyway, we sat in the back of the main floor and had a lovely waitress. We ordered french fries with the chipotle mayo dip, which was as amazingly delicious as I remember. Served in a large basket with newspaper, the fries come out hot, crispy and extremely flavorful. We also shared a satay sampler platter of steak, chicken and bacon wrapped shrimp. Each were wonderful on its own so that even though it came with 3 different sauces, I didn't have to use any of them. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned, the teriyaki chicken very juicy and yummy, the shrimp was fresh and the bacon crunchy.
Overall, really nice atmosphere and great service. And the fries are a must try!
Are you from Chicago?
This is your bar. Great place to come for Cubs/ Bulls/ Blackhawk games.
They have appropriate named special menu items like the Jay Cutler Chicken Sandwich, the Briggs Burger etc.
I personally like the deep fried ravioli as an appetizer. They also have buckets of Coors light beers.
During games, they will have raffle prizes if you wear the right colors. And if you wear the gear of an opposing team, you will gain the title of A hole of the day, which they will announce over the mike.
I love the friendly bartenders here too. I once sat at the bar, and ordered a chicken sandwich, which I found dry. The bartender asked me if I disliked it, and didn't even charge me for it.
I come here quite often, and will be back.
The negative comments about there being tv's in every booth weren't favorable but there is a positive here, somewhere to plug your phone in to charge! We were carded going in – not sure how that plays out if you are with minors having some kibbles but the door man was quite nice. The cartoon wall is pretty impressive if you actually remember cartoon strips (showing my age).
We decided to go with an array of apps and drinks. The waitress was super nice and attentive! We ordered the wings, which were meaty and cooked perfectly – not soggy, tex-mex quesadilla, that was FULL and filling and a side of fries. The three of us DEVOURED ALL OF IT! One was better than the next. The fries were crunchy on the outside but fluffy on the inside sticks of yumminess! The dipping sauce was like crack – I couldn't get enough of it.
The music was super loud otherwise we would have stayed for dinner. Two apps, a huge side of fries, 2G&T's, 4 margarita's and it was less than $70. Wasn't expensive considering it's NYC. Go check it out, just take earplugs. :))
Overlook was AWESOME.
I'm from Chicago and am so glad we stumbled upon Overlook for Sunday's Bears home opener versus the Packers. Their slogan "win or lose, we still booze" rang true – I absolutely needed a nap after the game!
We arrived shortly after opening and the bar was already packed. We were seated "family style" sharing a table with a few others, who I had said we'd make friends with, but they didn't seem interested in making friends. We were comfortable the whole game, and our server was great with keeping the buckets of beer coming.
The wings were also fantastic! They were large and meaty. I ordered medium sauce which had the perfect amount of spice. The fries are fresh-cut and they have several different dipping sauces available (I went with horseradish, which may seem weird, but was delicious.)
If I lived in New York, I'd be here ever Sunday during football season.
