Great small yet convenient place. We got the lamb kebab meal which had a great combination of lamb, naan, salad, hummus and other items. The place was small and only had a couple of seats by the wall however the food was delicious and I'll definitely come back but maybe for take out next time.
There are many options at 71st-Continental for lunch, from the fragrant food cart to Buffalo Wild Wings, and bagels. The last time I was at Pahal Zan's was many years ago, I was craving falafel so I decided to stop by.
It's literally located right by the LIRR station, across the street from the McDonald's on the right side. There are a few seats inside, basically counter style, no chairs or tables. This is not a date spot, maybe you can come here in the summer to pick up some food and go to the park for a picnic – the storefront is small and cozy with hungry diners coming in for a meal.
Everything is made to order, the salads and meats are in the see through fridge / display case when you walk in. It all looked good. A tempting assortment of beef and lamb burger pattys, chicken, lamb, beef, turkey, and chicken liver, different types of salads (beet, potato, eggplant), hummus, and sauces await. I got the lamb shish kebab platter ($18) – yeah I know I was craving a falafel(!) The platter was huge, and I'd be surprised if anyone can eat the whole meal in one sitting. There was a spoonful of each salad in the platter, my favorite was the potato, baba ganoush, hummus, and beets. There were 2 whole pita breads, and plenty of perfectly grilled lamb. The tahihi sauce and hot sauce were okay and not too spicy. Next time I'll get a can of the mango nectar also.
I truly enjoyed standing there watching the guys work behind the counter as they carefully prepare the orders and interact with patrons, they look like they love what they were doing and they do it well. It's that simple. They're happy, the customer's are happy, that's what matters.
The falafel I still haven't tried, but I will very soon!
We ordered delivery one day from here, and they came within the estimated time. The hummus was mediocre and the sandwiches were a little disappointing. We ordered the lamb, chicken, and turkey sandwiches. Taste wise, they were decent, but they barely put any meat in them. I should have gone with a falafel sandwich as that seems to be the most popular, but I wasn't in the mood for it at the time.
We switch on and off between Pahal Zan and Wafa's for Falalfels as the two are completely different but delicious. Sometimes you want a Pita, sometime you want a thin Pita Wrap.

My 68yr old Mother waits in line around 6pm for 3 Falafel Pitas. Everyone behind her that ordered a Platter was served immediately. Her and this other gentleman who ordered 1 Falafel Pita waited 45+ min. Was this order discrimination? Platter $15, Falafel Pita just $7? Why would they serve customer after customer who came in after her?
When we finally received our order, they apologized for the wait. My mother was furious! 45+ min for 3 Falafel Pitas while she just waited off to the side after paying?
Needless to say the sandwiches were ice cold and tasted – not the same. Something is off with Pahal Zan – and it's not good.
Really disappointed with you Pahal Zan, you used to be so good.
Drove there and had the falafel pita, $7. There was 3 falafel a in the pita. I wish there will be more in the pita. It wasn't that spicy. The taste was quite different from halal food truck style falafel.
After a Saturday hot yoga session in the area, falafel was the wholesome(ish) lunch I was craving for. Pahal Zan is small with a narrow counter to place your order and a few bar stools for ledge seating if you choose stay. A steady stream of people came in for both during the late afternoon.
The falafel sandwich ($6.99) was made with a pita dressed with hummus and spicy sauce, then filled to the brim with Isreali salad, cabbage salad, 4 falafel balls, and topped with a bit of tahini sauce and pickles.
The falafel was excellent, crunchy on the outside and not at all greasy, but I couldn't help but feel like the entire sandwich was missing a savory factor. It looked big and I didn't think I would finish it, but I did and I found my fullness just right. (I definitely could have made a stop at Wafels & Dinges afterwards since it was parked just down the block, but I restrained!)
Overall it was A-OK and a bit pricey, especially for the area. (Considering Taim's falafel sandwiches are only $6.25, AND they give you the option for whole wheat pita and flavored falafel.) The search for a post-yoga lunch spot continues…
Yum, yum Falafels! Moroccan spiced Falafels!
I tried the Falafel Pita Sandwich. The Falafel balls were spiced up and crunchy on the outside! Surprisingly, very moist but not greasy on the inside. Delicious! The pita bread itself was a delight as well! So soft and fresh! The sandwich comes with salad – chopped up lettuce, chunks of tomatoes, and cucumber strips dressed with tahini sauce! I am still currently enjoying it at the moment! Very light vegetarian option that does not leave you bloated.
The only down side is that my Falafel balls are cold, however, surprisingly still crunchy!
Service was quick and staff is very polite. Located conveniently under the Forest Hills LIRR station, it is a good grab and go spot! I will be returning to try their "kababs" and platters!
Buyers Beware: They charge a different price if you pay by credit card without informing you first. They told me a set price and charged my card another price. I didn't realize what they were charging me until I read my receipt later. I guess it was my fault for not reading the reviews beforehand. Like other yelpers have mentioned, it's not because we're being cheap…it really is the principle of the matter and I think this place is just SHADY!
To top it off, you only get 3 pieces of falafel and they were dry as hell!
I'd be glad to take my business elsewhere!
