Paname is a cozy and inviting Parisian restaurant with warm and friendly service. I went on a Saturday in the early evening for a dinner date with my husband. There were several parties already dining there, however they did have a table for us. There are several tables and booths and a seated bar area located in the back of the restaurant. We were seated at a table for two in the middle of the restaurant. The ambiance was a little louder than average due to one table in particular but after the exited the restaurant was much quieter and romantic with dim lighting along with some lounge music set to a low volume. The waitress took much care in explaining the menu items and specials to us and informed us of their offerings along with their option of a prixe fixe menu. She was also well informed about the ingredients of the dishes in the event we had any questions.
Our meal began with an amuse-bouche made of porcini mushrooms formed into a bite sized pate. As a mushroom lover I felt it tasted good and had a decent consistency but was a little lacking in flavor. The presentation however was very nice. We were happy that they have an extensive wine list and they carried our favorite organic Chardonnay; Bonterra. It's rare that we find this chardonnay on the menu when we are dining out.
Our first appetizer received mixed reviews. We decided to try the smoked salmon with floral honey Dijon mustard sauce. My husband felt the salmon was too salty but he is on a low salt diet. I didn't share the same sentiment. I felt that the flavor was fine and the texture of the first was perfect. It was also sliced very thin so that you can place it on the toasted baguette along with the mustard, onions, and capers. The mustard added a hint of sweetness to counteract the salt. When assembled as a mini sandwich all the the flavors complimented one another. Since my husband didn't eat very much of this appetizer we selected some other safe options I knew he was sure to enjoy.
Next we went with the shrimp cocktail with classic sauce au raifort and the Jonah crab cakes with remoulade sauce. The shrimp cocktail was cooked very well and served in a long glass along with the sauce, some lemons, and a sage garnish. The shrimp was jumbo in size, properly de-veined, clean and fresh. The sauce was the perfect accompaniment. It was nice and tangy with a great kick of horseradish which I love. The presentation on this appetizer was also very pleasing.
The Jonah crab cakes were made with good quality crab with a good meat to breading ratio. The taste was very sweet and delectable and the cakes were assembled very solidly allowing them to be sliced without falling apart. The remoulade was on the mild side but I am used to eating Cajun style remoulade which typically has a bit more of a spicy kick to it. Me and my husband both enjoyed this appetizer and would definitely order it again however I did bite in a bit of shell at one point. Unfortunately with crab cakes this happens from time to to time so I won't hold it against them.
For our main course my husband went with the bouillabaisse with shrimp, cod, clams, and mussels in a saffron broth with garlic aoili. This was an excellent combination of seafood. All of the seafood was prepared well and very fresh. The broth was delicious with tons of flavor, we couldn't help but dip our bread into this amazing broth to finish it off.
For my entree I selected the sauteed shrimp vadouvan with lait de coco served in a potato nest on a bed of rice. The sauce was a very delicately spiced curry. Creamy is an understatement. The presentation was of course top notch again. By now you should have noticed the theme here. This restaurant take's much care in making the food look just as wonderful as it tastes. The potato nest is very crispy reminiscent of a thin waffle style potato chip. The rice was a typical white medium grain rice with added spices. I would recommend this entree highly to anyone who is a fan of shrimp.
Dessert completely blew our socks off. The creme brulee at Paname is really off the charts. It's super rich and creamy on the inside with a hard iced sugary shell and I also detected a few dashes of cocoa powder on top and a lovely presentation with fresh mint, whipped cream, and a slice strawberry. My husband went with the apple tarte and the moment he took a bite I saw his eyes light up like never before. He said it was the most delicious apple tarte he had ever tasted and that's a huge statement coming from him. It came with a Tahitian vanilla ice cream which I swiped from him while he wasn't looking. It was just too tempting to resist.
If you are looking for a moderately priced, non-pretentious Parisian restaurant to dine in with a great selection of wines and seafood, and friendly service that accommodates small to medium sized groups you've come to the right place.
Authentic, underrated French spot that are one of the rare businesses that still have their owner being hands on at the restaurant. New York shell steak was nice. The other girls ordered spaghetti bolognese and salmon. Presentation was impressive and service was good. Lights are dim and very private, perfect for a date. The owner then checked whether everything was fine and made some French jokes as we left. I forgot to check in to get my free dessert, I hate when that happens! Nice for a impromptu dinner.
Only got dessert because I was meeting my friends at the end of their lunch, for which they only had compliments! I ordered the tarte tatin because it is one of my favorite dessert ever from back home and I've got to say, it was very delicious. But even better than the flavor, it was the presentation and the look of it that impressed me. This was a beautiful dessert, a piece of art and I fell bad eating it (not really actually), it was very very good and the flavors and textures were right on point! I also had a bite of the creme brulee (huge ramequin!), that was fantastic…. hmm, salivating thining about it. Also, I tried the chocolate volcano….. oh yeah, it's hard to only have one bite. With coffee, mini cookies are served, I like that. Overall food experience: awesome! Beautifully presented!
