Papatzul
“The guacamole is really good, the sangria and happy hour are worth it (5 dollars beers & sangria).”
“Prices are also reasonable for what you get, and it's located in a nice, tucked away spot in the southern part of SoHo.”
“believe is amazing and not pricey at all, try the budin al pasilla is fantastic and obviously the deserts are to die for….”

Make a reservation before coming on the weekend!
Came here for Friday evening dinner with 3 others. The bar was packed & very loud when I walked in with my friend. We had some time to kill before the guys met us, so we each got a happy hour margarita (I think they were $7 each), but since the bar was so crowded & loud, we couldn't have a good conversation…we kept getting bumped into!
They sat us at our table on time, but they didn't send someone to us, we had to flag someone down after waiting 10 min. Once the food arrived, it was amazing. Each of us was blown away but the flavors of our dishes. I got the grilled fish tacos and the lightness of these 4 little pockets of flavor were amazing. Each was topped with a fresh portion of cabbage, tomato, red onion & spicy mayo. Simply amazing.
I'd come back, but maybe on a less busy night. Great decor & cool vibe so it's perfect for a date or to bring a friend from out of town.
Came here twice for dinner during the weekday, both time were relatively quiet, not very busy.
Both drink and food menu were good, but nothing really stood out either. The cerviche, fish tacos, corn on the cobb and enchiladas are all pretty good, it's a safe place to go when you want to have some decent Mexican food, but it isn't going to blood your mind either.
Excellent salsa – around $5 for salsa and chips. The happy hour margaritas are a good deal at $6, but the drinks were so-so. My watermelon margarita tasted nothing like watermelon, but my friend highly recommends the tamarind margarita. I'll have to give this place another shot!
If you come here for happy hour margaritas, you're good to go! $6 is the happy hour price for a pretty decent, palatable margarita. Or 6.
This place has truly mediocre food. I would say it's terrible, but I don't want to be *that* dramatic. I'm not a Mexican connoisseur by any means, but no. Just no. All the proteins in this place are beyond reheated (maybe twice, three times reheated). That dry, crisp taste and that reheated taste like your mama made you growing up .Y'all know what I'm talking about – don't front.
$14 for a tiny bowl of premade guac from ShopRite? nooooooooooooo
Get drunk here and go to Taco Bell.
Don't come here for the food – do come for the sangria! Great spot for chill drinks with friends. The white sangria is SO good (watermelon flavored) and they have great happy hour prices. Papatzul is never overly crowded and the staff is so warm and friendly. Get some chips & guac to munch on but don't take it any further. The food is completely underwhelming, instead there are tons of great options in the area you can hop to!
Grrreat drinks. Fan of the hibiscus margarita for sure. Be warned, it's a sugary drink. There's not a lot of bite to it–I could barely taste the tequila, but it got the job done. For my second drink, I wanted to try the watermelon, but went for the sangria instead. It was suitably strong, and the price was good (happy hour special is $6 marg, $5 sangria). We also got some guac to share, and it was decent.
The atmosphere of the place was by far my favorite thing about it–it's tucked away from the main Canal St stretch, which helps give it a calmer vibe, but it's still a place where you can get loud and drink with coworkers. They have a fairly large seating area in the back, but happy hour specials are only served in the front and at the bar. Nevertheless, the wait staff and bartenders were very accommodating of our large group, and let us sit in the back.
I will be returning.
My PIC and I come here every Wednesday for happy hour. The food is fine but the cocktails are spectacular. You can get hibiscus, tamarind, pomegranate or lime flavored margaritas for 6 bucks and they are amazing quality. Papatzul is the prime example of the glory of NYC happy hour. Amazing drinks and high-scale atmosphere for low prices 5 – 8. The crescent-shaped bathrooms are pretty cool too, just saying.
I'm going to base this review solely on the fact that I love the location and their hibiscus margarita.
Most Mexican places in NYC are either packed, not authentic or overrated. This location is legitimately down to earth, the drinks are heavenly and the staff is nice.
The first and only time I've eaten here I had the fish tacos and they were decent. I don't really like tilapia because it's a cheap fish but I prefer it over mahi mahi. Yeah yeah, I know. I also had the guacamole which was wonderful but I think it needed more salt and some more flavor but creamy and delicious as usual. My friend had the enchiladas which she claims were amazing and authentic. She is Mexican and bases her opinion on restaurant authenticity with enchiladas. So it's possible that next time I dine here, I will try more authentic plates to gauge how much better this place can be.
This is a very low key location with good food, good drinks and a late happy hour. Need a place to go after work, this is your new haven!
