This place is the new place to go for hot dogs with onions in NYC. All the food carts are now this Halal stuff. You can't get a good hotdog any more. Until you go here! They are awesome here, I only had hotdogs with mustard and onions. This place is right up there with WhiteCastle in my book!!!
I like this joint for what it is – grubby American late-night munchies – but it's no high quality food.
I always crave cheese fries (fries with nacho cheese) and these always hit the spot. This place always has fast service (although rude – the employees will rush you to order/pay faster) and cheap prices.
Don't get the corn dog though – they're refried for heat, and sometimes they're cold.
Great late night food and cheap. Also the drinks they have are great. I usually get everything on it. However watch out for the cheese sauce. If its not fresh it's pretty nasty. Overall a good spot for late night munches.
I'd never had a Papaya Dog and I was right there, so why not?
For $2, I got a dog with my usual kraut topping.
The dog had serious snap, but the kraut was lacking.
I tried my boyfriend's dog with onions and mustard and wasn't into it.
As touristy as it is, if I'm going to eat a hot dog again, it'll be from a street cart.
I LOVE papaya dog hot dogs and fries. The are delicious! Whenever I'm in the city, I make a point to stop by and have at least one dog. The guys are always friendly and welcoming, and the line is never long.
One day I'll branch out and try the corn dogs which look equally yummy.
Nestled beneath the 6th Ave equivalent of the Flatiron building, this divey joint is pretty much the only game in town in terms of cheap wieners for the Washington Square set. Ever since beloved Gray's Papaya was cruelly transformed into yuppie haven Liquiteria. (No, of course I'm not bitter)
Papaya Dog lacks the same charm and quirky decor / signage as Gray's – but they do have the benefit of chili dogs that will set you back a little under 3 bucks. And their chili has pinto beans in it, which is a tasty but often rare touch which it comes to topping dogs.
Their corn dogs are also a tasty after midnight snack, as long as you don't think too hard about them. They sit pre-made for a while, and then are sliced down the side and re-dunked in hot oil upon ordering. And every now and then you get one that's still jarringly cold inside.
Still, the guys here always greet you with a smile and speedy service. And I'm grateful for this spot for a cheap late-night snack. I hope the rumors of it being pushed out for something "upscale" and annoying prove to be unfounded, and that these dogs stick around for a long time to come.
Papaya Dog is a hot dog franchise synonymous with New York City. With several locations throughout the city, I'm sure you've probably eaten here quite a few times yourself. They serve hot dogs of course, as well as fries, chicken tenders, cheap burgers, as well as tropical fruity drinks like virgin versions of Piña Colada, Mango and Orange. I stopped by to order a Chili and Cheese Dog. Simple, savory and it hits the spot. Come on by if you're in the mood for cheap good food.
My least favorite of the Papayas.
I've only been here once, but was not very satisfied with the dogs here. In pretty much every way they were inferior to the many other great places for hot dogs in town. Flavor was meh, not a great snap, bread was blah.
The only saving grace is I think they are cheaper than some other spots. However, I would rather pay a little more to get a better dog.
