This place is your GO TO place for a New York street hot dog. Especially since all the street cart vendors have transitioned to "Halal Food". These guys turn out the good old fashioned street hot dogs with the Sabrets onion sauce that I remember. With all the choices of places to go in NYC we hit this place like 4-5 times in 4 days. Ya it's that good!
Don't get me wrong I like the franks at Papaya Dog, if you need something quick to eat Papaya Dog is your spot and the prices are dirt cheap and the pickings real simple.
But there are major two problems here;
First One: The service sucks, like I been here 3 times and unless you smack one of these guys on the head they won't pay you any mind they are too busy arguing with each other and talking BS than to take your order, hey it a shit job nobody wants unless you need to keep that room your renting with 7 other guys.
Second One: This is not Papaya King , ya it's Papaya King that's famous in the movies with all the different toppings and selections at 86th street. This place is just a copy cat rip off that has degraded everything Papaya.
R. is in the building.
PRO TIP: you can sit at little italy pizza (next door) if the weather sucks or you can't multitask: stand and eat.
you like wieners? then you're in the right spot. mustard. ketchup. relish. onions. are free.
cheapish dawgs: two fitty. i would bypass the burgers, chicken sandos, and fish samwiches…those items are for tourist buttholes who don't know better.
dawgs slatherd in mustard and onions are my way to go.
the cheese fries are legit bc the waxy liquid cheese will coat your innards from gullet to exit. the fries be crunchy, salty and paired well with the napalm queso.
they take credit cards i think. and seamless and other food services deliver from here…
you have to wonder where you went wrong in life if you are getting delivery from papaya dog. seriously. this is primarily post drinks eats joint. so if you're here on a date, leave NYC and join a cult.
drops mic so i can hot dawggg n cheez fry in peace.
i out

I'm ALLLLL about cheap eats while exploring the city!
I've been missing In n Out back in CA/TX but Papaya Dog comes close.
We tried their cheeseburger ($3) … with fries and drink it's $5. Bun is nicely toasted to perfection and patties are grilled to order. What comes out is something close, though not in n out quality and taste – for the price (and size!).
They serve hot dogs, corn dogs, philly cheese steaks, but really… I'm here for their burgers… and I'm ok with that! 🙂
damn it Anthony Bourdain, you got me again!
After two hours at the Empire State Building, my girlfriend and I were hungry. I immediately saw Papaya Dog and thought, "omg, I saw this place on Anthony Bourdain's show, Layover, I have got to try it". Turns out I got this place confused for Papaya Gray ( the real hot dog place on AB's show) lol
Yes these hot dogs are cheap, but they are a sorry excuse for a hot dog. The sausages are so narrow and small that you can't even see the sausage inside the hot dog once the employees put it in. They also want $0.75 in addition if you want to add hot cheese or chili on top of the dog. The fountain sodas here are also extremely flat. I am not impressed with Papaya Dog. at all! Even the Costco $1.50 hot dog combo is a better value than Papaya Dog.
By the way, apparently you can eat your hot dogs and other foods next door inside the pizza place. I found that out too late after struggling to eat both my dogs and drink my soda on the side of the street at 2am.
Want good hot dogs at reasonable price in NYC? Then this is the place to go. Their papaya drink is also very good.
FYI, there's seating at the pizzeria next door.
2.5 stars. The hotdogs are super affordable here. 2 hot dogs + 16 oz drink for just $4.95 (they have other similar variety combo for $4.95, too). This place is a chain and the one we stopped by to try was right opposite of the Penn Station. When my husband saw it, he remembered it being on Anthony Bourdain, so he wanted to try it immediately.
Out of whim, we just got 16oz papaya juice and a corn dog. Let me just say that the corn dog was down right disgusting. Once we ordered the corndog, they grab a corndog that was so super dark brown like it had been refried and refried over and over many times already and dump it quickly into a pool of oil for 1-2 min to heat it up. They then took it out of a fryer and wrapped it in a foil to give it to you. Honestly, I took a look and was so grossed out by a pool of oil the corndog has absorbed. It wasn't even crunchy..but really felt like the corndog flour just absorbed a large pool of oil into itself that the flour that was supposed to be crunchy…was so soggy…and worse, soggy of oil! I took my first bite and knew..this was a big mistake. The papaya juice tasted artificially too sweet and creamy. Even though we only got just a 16 oz cup to share, it took us a while to finish it because it was just too sweet.
Overall, affordable place if you are looking to fill your stomach. But otherwise….complete waste of time if you are a foodie and looking for something decent to eat.
This is just a poor imitation of the famous Gray's Papaya and Papaya King. The hot dogs here are grilled and do have a bit of crunch to them. However, they are noticeably smaller here and not as flavorful. If they were cheaper, it might even out, but that is not the case. Their special is two hot dogs and a soda for $5 – the same price for less. Stick to the originals.
