Went here for brunch with a friend.
Stuffy…Dated…Cramped. These are a few of the adjectives that popped up in my head after first stepping in this place. Great start.
Food was mediocre for the price. I got a lox eggs benedict and it was good. I finished my plate. But then again I always finish my plate.
I didn't hate my experience, but I'm likely not planning on being back unless someone else was excited about wanting to give this place a go.
I had a wonderful lunch at this charming cafe. It is very small although it has 2 floors. Probably good to make a reservation during dinner and weekends.
They have an extensive menu of traditional French items as well as some more American type food. I decided to go with the duck confit salad. It turned out to be really good. The duck was perfectly cooked and the salad had a nice variety of shaved beets and other veggies on lettuce. There was also a nice Dijon mustard and fruit compote to flavor the duck which worked well together.
The service could have been better, especially by the end of lunch when the restaurant was pretty empty yet we still had to ask for the dessert menu and check more than once. For dessert we had the bananas foster. It was so good and presented very unusually as the ice cream came in a little side dish and the bananas were inside a puff pastry!
Highly recommended overall.
I liked this place from the moment I stepped in.
After an enjoyable evening at the Cooper Hewitt museum around the corner, we stepped into this cozy neighborhood restaurant not really knowing what to expect. I asked the host for a table for 2 and started taking off my coat, causing my host to immediately started heckling me for my nerve. I knew we'd get along.
We got to choose our table in the little space upstairs and were given crayons by our affable host before left with a menu of French fare. Perhaps the menu is drastically different for dinner compared to brunch or perhaps I didn't study it close enough, but I didn't think it was eclectic or nontraditional at all as other reviewers mentioned.
My dinner companion and I split a bottle of smooth Pinot Noir which paired perfectly with our truly medium rare hanger steak and duck confit.
Now let us pause here to reflect on the Duck Confit. It was divine. The juicy skin fell off the bone and the fat only served to intensify its richness. It's the kind of dish that stops you in your tracks mid-sentence and smile. Oh the Duck Confit.
Overall it was a great experience. You really few like you've discovered a local gem when you come here.
This longstanding Upper Madison Avenue bistro is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. It almost makes me feel that I don't have to fly to France to experience dining at a neighborhood Parisian bistro. It's so unaffected, so comfortable with itself, that you don't feel that this is an ersatz bistro. The chef is accommodating to any dietary requests and the wine list is sophisticated but reasonably priced. I've been stopping in here for decades and am glad it's kept true to its roots. I feel like I'm in Bordeaux when I eat here
We went to Pascalou for Sunday brunch. The restaurant is very quaint and has that nice French bistro charm. It was a beautiful day and they had tables both inside and outside.
We all ordered prix fixe brunch at $18.00. This is a very good value as it includes a drink (Mimosa, White Sangria, Coffee, Tea, Juice, etc) an entree and a dessert. I had the Eggs Benedict. This came with a nice side salad and everything was good. My daughter had the Croque Madame which was also goo but not great. For dessert we had coconut gelato with pineapple. Some in our party chose coffee instead of dessert.
The service was very good and our waitress was extremely nice and pleasant. Pascalou is a good choice for a good brunch at a good price. It wasn't great but still quite good.
Michael J.Fox was also having brunch at a table behind us, and that made the brunch even more interesting.
I had the $18 prix fixe brunch, which comes with a drink of your choice. I got the Grand Marnier french toast because I was really craving something sweet even though it technically isn't worth it as french toast is way cheaper than eggs benedict usually. The french toast was pretty good – nothing spectacular. I got a white sangria with it, which was also good, and the dessert of the day (strawberry shortcake) was delicious, even though I had something sweet already as my main meal.
My main gripe is the price of the prix fixe – I would've liked to be just able to order the french toast a la carte. But I guess it's UES – things are slightly more expensive. Service is pretty good, the tables outside aren't as crowded and as dark as the ones inside, so definitely recommend sitting outside.
Not so impressed. Recently come for lunch and had the prix fixe. Service was slow, slow, slow. Salad was tasty as were my short ribs entree. Barely has room for dessert. However, I should never have to wave down a server EVERY time I need them. Only plan on going there if you have a few hours on hand. The food is good but you will be hungry by the time you pay your tab.
3.5 stars. A pretty decent little French restaurant on the UES, with a fairly eclectic menu (shumai? that has to be frozen, right)
Nonetheless, the brunch menu was a pretty good deal – a lot of food, entree and dessert, and a drink. We had the boeuf bourguignon (it's a french place) which was pretty good, especially with the mashed potatoes, the BBQ ribs (I did say eclectic…), which were also surprisingly good, and the truffle and cheese omelette (OK). The desserts were also pretty good, though our pistachio ice cream was completely melted… and I'm not sure I was convinced when they told us it was supposed to be like that.
But it was nice – decor, service and food.
