Patacon Pisao is one of my favorite establishments. My experience with this Venezuelan cuisine is usually at the lower east side location. The Queens location is small with a few tables so take-out is more comfortable. Your orders are freshly made so I recommend ordering over the phone for pickup if you dont want to wait. I ordered the cachapa de pabellon and a grilled reina pepia. While the food was delicious, I couldn't help but compare the Queens and Manhattan locations.
Overall the Manhattan location serves more saucy/meaty sandwiches.
Reina pepia – better at this location. There's much more filling and well spread on the sandwich. Highly recommend for avocado lovers.
Cachapa de pabellon – my favorite sandwich at Patacon. It was good but not as good as the Manhattan location. There was less filling, less saucy and less cheese.
If you check in on Yelp, you get a free tequeno (cheese stick). I'm glad it's free because I don't think I would order it. It wasn't as cheesy as I thought it was! I love cheese so I was expecting a lot. I guess I would give it another shot but will eat it on the spot when it's still warm.
You fill up on your own side sauces near the door. I would definitely keep ordering sandwiches here because it's convenient in Queens.
We were the only ones in the place. It took 40 minutes for our food to get ready. The food wasn't that good also. We got patacon pisao and the one with pulled pork. It was too old and hard to chew on. Not what I expected from the reviews.
The staffs are very friendly and helpful; I came here after passing by twice in the front of the restaurant. The place is not that big so you will be lucky if you can find a table and sit down with your group.
I order the patacon mix (steak and chicken) with some yuca frita on the side and passion fruit juice.
The yuca frita was very crispy and delicious. If you don't knows what patacon you are missing up. The patacon is very a populated sandwich that the people Venezuela make with large slices of twice tostones (fried green plantain), you can use anything between the tostones, you can tell is a sandwich using tostones instead of bread.
This Patacon was quite awesome! I recommend it to anyone, there also have others food options so is also a great idea to take a look to the menu. The passion fruit juice was tasty and very refreshing.
.
As I am always busy checking into my Yelp and Swarm app so I had different choices rambling in my brain. I had my heart set on a Patacon Sandwich but ended up with the Pabellon + Yuca Frita. The shredded beef was a bit dried but I like my meat with some juice. I am not a fan of eating white rice but I prefer yellow rice drenched in the black beans sauce. The Yuca Frita was semi-cold when it came to our table not piping hot but the chimichurri and parmesan topping on it was yummy. My boys ate my sweet plantain because I don't like the mushy texture. I left there full but was not satisfied with the taste.
This small Venezuelan spot in the not-so hot part of Elmhurst has lots to offer!
They're clearly known for their Patacons but I opted for the arepas simply cause that what I was craving.
FOODS!
-Pabellon in fried Arepa ($6.50)
If you haven't had pebellon before, this is your time to do it. It's a braised shredded beef with black beans, sweet plantains and cheese. I also went with the fried arepa and I'm glad I did. The arepa was nice and crispy and held together well with all that pabellon in the middle.
-Yuca Fries (forgot the price sorry!)
I've never had yuca fries that I truly enjoyed. While I'm sad to say that these didn't change my mind about them, they were the best I've ever had. The fries were cooked well and they were topped with some sort of cheese/herb concoction and pickled red onions.
– Salchipapas ($5)
Extravagantly cut hot dog chunks and fries pretty much lol. They also top these off the yummy pickled red onions.
-Chicken in fried Arepa ($5.50)
I only had one bite of this, but the same things apply to this arepa "sandwich". Nice and crispy fried arepa with perfectly cooked chicken inside. Surprisingly, this arepa wasn't as stuffed as the Pabellon one.
Service was great. The cashier was friendly and offered great recommendations. She also brought the food out to our table which I appreciated considering it's a grab&go joint.
I will definitely be back for more!
I was excited to try this place because of the raving reviews but sadly, Patacon Pisao did not live to my expectations. Delivery was quick and smooth but the food was disappointing.
My husband and I both had the Paisa Patacon and the Yuca fries with the chimichurri sauce and pickled red onions. The patacon was very dry and hard (not sure if that's the way it's supposed to be, but it was almost inedible). There was hardly any flavor inside of it and my mouth found it difficult to process. We were also confused by the "chimichurri sauce" on the fries. The smell and texture resemble nothing like that of chimichurri. In fact, my husband hated it so much that he could not even continue after a few bites. He's not a picky eater at all and he can stomach lots of bad tasting food but these yuce fries… he found them to be quite repulsive.
The only good tasting thing that we had was the Passion Fruit juice. Perhaps I should get something else next time but…I doubt that there will be a next time. This left a bad taste in my mouth that I don't care to visit again. Ever.
Wow, I have been sleeping on this place it's amazing !! I got the special salchipapas with pickled red onion and the patacon pabellon.
Holy crap the salchipapas are amazing and remind me of Peru so much and the patacon was perfectly crisp and huge I couldn't eat it all but man it's done to perfection meat is juicy and the shaves are divine.
I love this place and can't stop thinking about it. God bless patacon pisao !!
This Venezuelan place is pretty cramped with about 4 small tables and is more of a lunch or takeout place. Food was really good though. We tried a few things off the menu:
-Cachapa – These are similar to arepas, but made of sweet corn. You can choose from cheeses and meats for the filing. This was my favorite thing here. It is very savory and sweet.
-Patacon – This is a signature item of this place. It is a sandwich with pieces of tostones instead of bread. Vegetarian and meat fillings are available. I thought this was just okay because tostones are too dry for me to act as bread.
-Chicha – Way different than the Peruvian chicha morada. Instead, this one is a creamy sweet rice drink with a dash of cinnammon on top. Very delicious and definitely worth a try.
This place also serves arepas and rice platters, which I have had at other places, so I passed on those. Venezuelan food is very similar to Colombian food, so if you like that you will definitely enjoy this place.
