This is a great restaurant for take out or if you are short on time. It's located very close to Penn Station and it's a build-your-own-box kind of style. The owners/servers are really friendly and will explain things to you if you ask. I'm no expert on Indian food, but Patiala had some pretty yummy dishes. It's not too spicy for those who can't stand the heat. There are probably a total of 9 seats in the entire shoebox of a restaurant.
Pretty average Indian food – not amazing but not terrible. If you are in need for some Indian food and are right nearby, then it's not a bad option as they have some decent lunch specials.
Hot, fresh Indian food with an affordable price tag? Count me in! I got the lunch combo to go with daal over rice with sides of chicken curry and potato dish. It was filling and delicious, with just the right amount of spice – I wasn't blown away by the food, but it was hearty and comforting, and for the value/time/service, I will definitely come back over and over again. Note that the food is hot and served right away, however it is not specifically made for your order. Oh, and if you're getting it to go, keep in mind that it can get messy – they packed my to go container in a slightly tilted way in that when I walked ~10 minutes and opened the box to eat, it was a mess everywhere. something I was expecting & was not surprised, but if you're grabbing their food to go to catch your train or bus, make sure to grab tons of napkins too!
One of my colleagues Brad B. almost always gets their Lunch Special here. Its quite small with a few stools inside. I was busy snapping pictures left and right. When its my turn to order…I got the vegetables rice + cauliflower and potatoes in the yellow sauce + Chicken Tikka Masala along with a Naan. The colors of my order was so vibrant and the aroma makes "mama drooling"! Mmmmm the food was so yummy and taste their fresh ingredients. Next time I need to ask for more of the sauce over the rice. Seriously this spot reminds me of Joy Curry…how I missed thee! The price is about the same as well.
Ordered takeout from here a few weeks ago. Quite bad.
Ordered the Veg Phall (British Curry) expected it to be hot, it was quite mild and tasteless, one of the worse Indian meals I have experienced. Not worth fifty cents. It was all tasteless sauce and overcooked broccoli. Really broccoli in Indian food? YUCK!
Also ordered the Butter Paneer, on their menu claimed it was "spicy", no – not at all, just a tasteless creamy mess.
Not real food, much less real Indian food.
I stopped here on the way home after reading several reviews. The place is very small, a bar situation on one side with 5 chairs and that is it. It is really more appropriate for take out. I got the tandoori chicken and onion naan which came with a side of chickpeas or lentils. It was delicious. For a quick meal or en route to or from penn station, it is ideal.
I would recommend and return.
Warning: this place is TINY. TINY.
TINY.
But the portions are huge. Like, damn.
I got the lamb box, and my friend got the chicken. Both were really flavorful and good. The naan was also very good. The only thing I didn't like was the spinach with cheese side…very heavy and pretty bland, actually.
Chances are more than likely you won't get a seat here so come prepared to take your meal to go.
Our experience was more like 3.5/5.
We ordered delivery. Really good value. For $30, we got chicken saag, lamb madras, 2 soups, 2 rice, 2 breads, 2 desserts.
Taste: My husband and I both thought it could have been better. The chicken saag was a bit bland, at least the chicken wasn't dry like some other Indian places. The lamb madras was yummy, meat was tender, but the flavor was not memorable.
We would order again and try something else.
