Food: 3/5
Service: 3/5
Pricey, mediocre food. I walked by the food stands before going shopping at the Kmart at Herald Square and while I appreciate the effort to set up some more urban dining spots, I just felt like the execution was not there.
The food wasn't super creative fare that you would observe at places like smorgasborg and yet it was priced similarly or even higher. I had a pretzel dog which on the surface seems like an innovative concept, but honestly they just stuck a hotdog in one of those pretzel buns that you could buy at trader joes. At $10 a pop, it was a steep price to pay for something that wasn't what I expected. If it was actually a freshly made pretzel bun with salt encrusted smokey goodness, maybe I'd rate this higher.
You know that moment when you are hungry, but want to try something new, because..well you are bored of the same-old? Yeah. So I've walked around here a few times, looked at the price, and walked out. It's so pricey. The food looks and smells good, but it's really pricey. So I went to this arepa place, because I love arepas. I decided on getting plantain con queso(?), plantain with cheese and some green sauce. Let me say, those plantains were hella burnt. The toppings added nothing to the plaintain. In short, mediocre. I may come back for the arepas, but will not order plantain here.
It's definitely a major step up from the bum alley this place was a year ago. Remember? It was like a time warp to early 80s New York, with sundry vagabonds trolling the dirty mall between K-Mart and UPS. The only food options were the combination Indian/Caribbean lunch counter and Lenny's aka Lenwich.
Now, Penn Plates' gentrified gastronomy brings several cool food vendors, and while the spoiled (good god) pop-up fans clamor for Smorgasburg-caliber artistry and panache, PP is actually doing a nice job matching ethnic foods to the relatively straightforward palates of Midtown West office workers and train travelers.
Pros:
-Beer at every tent! And good beer. And wine, too!
-Solid eating (4 stars for the sushi "burrito" and 3.5 for the gozleme).
Cons: Overpriced overall. Can get crowded. But you already knew that.
