I'll be honest: the idea of buying sushi in an underground train terminal wasn't immediately appetizing. However, when you are starving and have a four-hour train ride ahead of you, chances are, you are willing to take some risks.
I wouldn't have even tried it out had it not been for the giant "A" rating behind the counter. I mean, if it's good enough for NYC's Health Department, who am I to argue??
I bough the shrimp tempura just to be on the safe side, thinking that a little-bit cooked would be better than not-at-all cooked given the circumstances. As you can probably guess, it was tasty, but not the best I had ever had. Still, it was fine for being in a rush. If you are at Penn Station and want a healthy meal option, Penn Sushi is cool to try and a lot better of an option than other choices there. It's been a couple hours now and the food's digested with no issues. My fears have been allayed!
1 stars for being mediocre sushi, 1 for not killing me, -3 stars for the shrimp wrap (really) not agreeing with my girlfriend. I mean, it's Penn Station sushi, what could we have expected?
Decent sushi if you're in a bind and the food in general is much better than the greasy slop at most other places.
Penn sushi is like a machine churning out rolls which is a good thing as items don't sit. The best thing about penn sushi is the japanese dessert items such as red bean cookies if you have a sweet tooth. The salmon skin roll isn't bad and the rice while devoid of most flavor does have a touch of sake to it so maybe they use somewhat legit cooking methods.
Fast service and decent price point
The owners here are terrific. They have watched my 7 year old grow up from the age of 2. We enjoy the (frozen but tasty) shrimp shumai and edamame.
I get a few items here – the vegetable summer roll is great.
Closed on Sundays.
Great place if your in a jam for a bite to eat.
I've picked food up from here quite a few times over the years. Most recently – the ferry roll….. No rice, no seaweed. Tuna, avocado, salmon all wrapped with very thin slices of cucumber. Very filling.
Hit the spot for my 30 min train ride home.
Surprisingly good for a takeout place at Penn Station, and a pretty good selection of most popular nigiri and rolls. Too expensive for lunch as I have to spend about $15 without drink just to fill my belly most of the way.
I see a lot of people complaining about the prices here, but I actually thought they were pretty fair. My issue was with the taste of the actual spicy tuna roll. It had no spice, just pulverized fish, and there was way too much rice, which wasn't cooked correctly. The soy sauce was liquid salt – but the roll itself was salty – so it was overall a pretty terrible meal.
Don't know why people are complaining about the price, it is a sushi place…inside Penn Station. Combine both and well these prices. Anyway, I didn't get sushi here.
For some reason, this place sells Ochazuke/chazuke, aka green tea over rice (most likely Winter only.) I like this dish and it was nice and inexpensive so why not.
Flavor was fine, little pieces of fish in there along with rice and some crunchy seaweed. Nice and refreshing, worked well for the cold winter day.
Nice people here, I'll give it….a 3.2 or so.
