Pet Shop is another great addition to the Newark Ave scene! Although it seems as if a new spot pops up every couple of weeks there still aren't a ton of bars. South House and Porta are pretty much the Newark Ave go-to's on a weekend and can get really packed out. So, needless to say, Pet Shop is definitely on a fast track to become a mainstay in the JC going out scene.
The space is surprisingly huge! From the outside I didn't expect it to be nearly as large as it was. But it's actually the length of the entire avenue. The front area has got the bar and some standing room, and the back area has plenty of tables which are perfect for grabbing food. There is also a decent sized outdoor patio space with a couple of picnic tables and some hanging edison bulbs.
The bar is thoughtfully decorated and there are vintage photos of animals all over the walls. Whoever was in charge of decor definitely raided some pretty epic garage sales- at least that's how it looks to me. There are also some other cute touches like an old school photo booth and cigarette machine.
I ordered a gin cocktail which I wasn't really feeling. It was too warm and for the 12 dollar price tag, my class was only half filled. Next time I'm here I'll probably stick to wine or beer. I haven't tried any food yet, but the menu is strictly veg and has got some interesting options including a 'pulled pork' sammie made out of jackfruit.
Pet Shop has got an awesome vibe and already drawing in huge weekend crowds. I'm excited to watch what comes of it!
Pet Shop is a very large, spacious bar that used to be a Pet Shop on Newark Avenue.
I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon to check it out. It wasn't super crowded, maybe around 5 people sitting at the bar.
Overally, I was not super impressed with this place. It's dark and dingy in here. The space feels overdecorated, vintage cigarette machines, pinball, and a flat screen TV do not go together in my book. I felt a little bit like I had stepped back into the 60's, but not in a fashion forward, Mad Men type of way. It was confusing and I don't like to be confused.
I tried a couple of drinks. I didn't find any particularly worthy of writing home about.
I don't know if I'd come back.
Not really feeling the vibe here.
New, sleek, and a welcome addition to Newark Ave's restaurant row.
Pet Shop (…occupying a former pet shop, of all places) tries to separate itself from the herd by offering some electic cocktails in addition to plenty of choices to drink on the cheap (a can of Tecate, served with a wedge of lime, will run just $4). Food prices are reasonable and, rare for the neighborhood, vegetarian.
You can enjoy all this in either the main bar (complete with pinball machine) or out on the benches in the back garden.
Word of caution: Being a new and very popular bar, it can get very packed, very quick and service will slow to a crawl to match.
