Phil’s Pizza
“It's a real pizza joint with a fair ($2.50) price for a plain slice, fixins in jelly jars with holes punched out of the lids, and quick pleasant service.”
“Phil knows how to make a pizza and the delivery guy is the cat's meow.”
“Work around the area and I have been going to Joes mostly for pizza but since I discovered Phil's, I've changed allegiances.”

"you want the last slice bro?"
"huh?"
"I said, you want the last slice?"
"…you're joking right?"
"no, we're closing for vacation…you want the last slice or not?"
"yeah, fuck it, count me in."
"good choice my man. MA, WE CAN CLOSE NOW."
while a softer Yelper (anyone from outside of the NYC metro area) would've been turned off by this and written a prissy, whiny review: "OHMYGAWD THEY WERE SO RUDE"…I was overjoyed to find this remnant, a holdout, of authentic New York pizza.
you know, the ones with the dimly-lit-menu that hasn't changed since 1983 (except the prices). it was not the best pizza I've had, but your quintessential New York slice: crisp, not too thin, a little charcoal on the bottom, and the perfect sauce-to-cheese ratio. I was happily munching it while walking towards Pier 40 with the sun shining on me.
none of that hippie pizza stuff like "tofu/organic pineapple" or "Nutella/jellybean/mango"…you got plain, sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, peppers, and the rest of the usual suspects. a plain slice is $2.50
also, the quasi-argument the guy got into with his mother was pretty much exactly like how I talk to my mom. I felt right at home. you other kids with Italian mothers know EXACTLY what I mean.
my bro Phil H will be glad to know his name adorns this fine establishment.
I'm on board with the other Yelpers that reviewed Phil's, thank goodness for an old school style pizzeria. A stop into Phil's will take anyone back to their childhood if they grew up in New York circa 1970s-1980s. And I loved the photo montage they had up of the pizza shop throughout the years; big ups to Phil for the 1914 photo of Varrick St as well as the photo of himself in all his early '80s glory wearing cut-off running shorts. I really do wish all pizzerias still looked like Phils.
On to the goods, I had a grandma slice and a can of soda for $4.25. The slice was pretty big and it was tasty. I will be back to try the regular slice soon.
I've had Phil's a few times in the past, and for the most part wasn't too impressed. That said, a group of us ordered delivery from them since they had the best deal and my feelings towards them started to change!
For one, they MUST have been pulling out a fresh pie when I called, and decided to just send that one over. It was here (my office about 5 blocks away) in seriously 10 minutes. The slices definitely tasted better than I remembered, so I greedily wolfed down 3 of them. Yep, that happened.
All in all, though good, the pizza is still just like this review. Not great, but 3-Stars A-Ok.
I can't believe I've never reviewed Phil's. Been going there for years, used to live and work in the area, so it was a regular stop for me. It probably qualifies as a hidden gem, but for locals, it's no secret. Phil's has been around since the early 70's, I believe, and when you walk in there, it feels like it. It wouldn't be surprising if Johnnie Travolta or Radio Raheem walked in for a slice and a coke circa their heydays. Phil's is old school to the bone. He and his wife man the battle stations for the most part, but occasionally their son is there, too. The familial love/tension is palpable, and it reminds me of growing up with my Italian family.
This is a no frills, no B.S. slice shop. To me, it is quintessential NY thin crust pizza. What's more, you don't have to deal with ridiculous lines, exorbitant prices, temperamental pizzaiolos, long waits outside behind velvet ropes, or throngs of people mobbing the place. Every Monday-Friday (closed on weekends), Phil's is open and ready to serve. I no longer live or work in the area, but if/when I find myself there during the week, there is a good chance I'm going to hit up Phil's. You should, too.
Phil's pizza was a perfect stop for us after buying chocolate from Jacques Torres right down the street. The pizza was good, but I'm a fan of the really thin crust and this was a bit thicker. I think this pizza's a real treat for most, but I'm still searching for thinner crust. Another down side of Phil's is no bathroom. You have to go down the street to the macdonalds.
