Pho Minh’s

“For dessert, I really like the avocado shake, the hot coffee with condensed milk, any of their bubble teas or the taro dessert.”

“It reminds me of home (since I'm Asian,) especially the pork chop or beef cubes.”

“The weird thing is the portion of meat increased in their bahn mi. Oh well, still good place for viet food with very nice service.”

  1. In Union County New Jersey it's easy to find Chinese food.   You can't throw a stick without hitting a take-out joint and there are actually a couple authentic Chinese restaurants here and there too.  The one thing that you can't find everywhere?  Vietnamese food.  While nowhere near as popular as Chinese or Japanese, this cuisine deserves some representation which is why I'm glad Pho Minh's is around in a wonderful part of Linden.

Pho Minh's is located on Wood Avenue, a nice street with several shops and restaurants.  The restaurant itself is pretty big and could probably accommodate 30 people if not more easily.  The staff is very friendly though a tad distracted even when the restaurant isn't full.  I say that mainly because the staff was very attentive at first, but once we had our food they never came back to check if we needed anything (water refills etc.) which surprised me.  It wasn't a huge deal, I just found it out of the ordinary.

On my recent visit I had the beef pho with thin sliced beef in a wonderful broth with noodles. On the side you are given sprouts, mint and lemon to add in, all of which I used along with some sriracha and hoisin sauce to complete my preferred flavor for pho.  The beef was delicious and the noodles had a great texture.  The broth was good, but my personal preference is for more of a star anise flavor in the broth.  That said, I can understand why it would be toned down since that flavor isn't one most people enjoy in a broth with noodles.

I would definitely go back to Pho Minh's.  It's not the best Vietnamese food I've ever had, but it's good and fairly priced.

  2. I was craving Pho and looked to Yelp to find a restaurant in the area. We shared the spring rolls and each got a big bowl of Pho.. chicken for him and beef filet for me. The spring rolls were overly fried compared to rolls I've had elsewhere. The Pho was ok and even better topped with some hot sauce, but then again doesn't hot sauce make everything taste better? I'll keep this place in mind next time I'm craving Vietnamese food.

  3. I love Vietnamese food, especially their spring rolls, pho, banh mi and the fruit smoothies. I was so sad to leave Madison b/c they have a really nice family owned Vietnamese restaurant which I missed dearly. But thanks for my colleagues who introduced me to Pho Minh's, they have since become my go-to place for pho around the area. Plus my colleagues also love this place so it's a nice place to hang out for lunch if we eat out.

I would recommend the spring rolls as the appetizer. It's very refreshing with fresh shrimps and basil. The peanut dipping sauce goes very well with the rolls, though I wish the taste of peanut could be a little stronger. It's also kind of sweet in my opinion. So more peanut and less sweet would be good.

I usually order the pho with everything. For the less adventurous who are not as into tendons and tripe, fret not, they have options for flank, meat balls etc. The small size is usually more than enough for me, especially since I like to have an appetizer and also a smoothie (more on that later), even though it's only 50 cents more to upsize to the large. Recently I have found a spicy version of pho, which came with bone-in pork and ham *yummy*

Now to the smoothie, I love and recommend their avocado smoothie. The nice thing is that it doesn't seem to be sweetened, maybe just a little bit, which makes the taste super natural. If you are up for it, the durian smoothie is also great, but be warned, that's not for everyone =)

  4. This is my new favorite go to Pho place in this area.  I'm from NYC and I have tried sooo many Pho places in Brooklyn, Queens and Chinatown, but I think I rather come here.  The reasons are:
-This place is sooo spacious, you don't have to constantly shift your chair for someone to get by behind you.  I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, most pho places tends to cram gazillions tables and chairs in a little room!  I love it that I can't hear the conversations at the tables next to me. Lol
-The bathroom is insanely clean.  Overall, the place is very clean. Kudos to the staff.
-Very good portions.  I love how I can pick up my noodles with chopsticks without it falling into small chunks.
-Food is good.  The broth here is not as flavorful as some other pho places but I am completely fine with it.  The other places probably put tons of MSG and always leaves me very thirsty after the meal.  Not here, the flavor is not as strong and heavy, but the flavor is there and it makes me feel like I'm eating a healthier meal.  The viet spring rolls were so good the last time I had it here, but my hubby said I was probably too hungry that day.  So I will need to test it out again next time. So far so good.

  5. Okay so I finally tried the shrimp spring rolls and they were delicious! The basil, mixed with the shrimp and peanut sauce was a perfect combination. I also tried the grilled pork chop. It was too sweet for my taste but cooked perfectly. I'm definitely looking forward to trying more food items in the menu.

  6. Clean, great location located in Linden's uptown with plenty of metered street parking.  Bright, large "square" dining room. It is not fancy but very clean appearance, simple and friendly.  We visited with a large group of 13 and they didn't have a problem seating us all.

They have a huge menu, many choices and what we ordered was very good.  We had the friend spring rolls and summer rolls, both very good.  I had the pork chop, strips of pork and Vietnamese crab cake which was the best I ever had.  My brother in-law had the pork feet soup and heard the soup was fantastic.  My wife had the pineapple fried rice which I did taste and it was not bad.

They also serve bubble tea, I didn't have any but several of my family did and they seem very happy with their choices.  There were two servers for the whole restaurant and did their very best to get our order and meals correct and timely.  Whenever we are going to be in the area and need a place to eat, we will be back.

If you like Vietnames food and in the Linden area, this is worth a stop.

  7. Its OK Vietnamese in a an area that I could not find too many competitors.  If you are in the mood for Pho, live nearby and don't feel like driving far, this place can be OK.  However, I have had much better Pho, much better pork chops, egg quiche, and summer rolls elsewhere.

Service was anemic too.  I had to ask for hot tea about six times and there were only three tables of people there at the time; I asked for Pho for my son with beef meatballs and brisket and received no brisket? My son was starving and generally puts away a bowl of Pho every time.  He ate half and said it wasn't so good and stopped eating it.

Not sure why this is happening, maybe too much partying the night before?

Any one of the items I described above would have been fine, but put all together in one meal, there is a pattern here.

  8. This is a good local Vietnamese place, my fiance and I have come here many times. I am so spoiled coming from the T dot O and working in NYC and having great Asian food. I have had better, but this place is just fine.
The Pho is good, the broth is very tasty. We have also had the Bahn Mi several times, and always ask for extra meat, the baguette is always fresh. The spring and summer rolls have always been freshly prepared. They also have a good selection of bubble teas and some desserts.
I'm glad we have a local Vietnamese place to come to, will definitely return!
