Pho Sure is now my spot for Vietnamese sandwiches. They offer a duck banh mi which was delightful. The bread was lightly toasted, and filled with flavorful duck meat, and the usual carrots, cucumber, cilantro, and spicy mayo. The portion is just right and a good deal for $8.
Service is basic and restaurant is small and cozy. Very satisfying option for lunch, pho sho.
I've had a craving for some good Vietnamese food for several months (since moving back to NYC from SF). I used to eat Vietnamese at least twice a week in SF. Of course I turned to my trusty Yelp app to feed my craving. I was in the west village for the afternoon and Yelp lead me to Pho Sure. I am so glad it did. As I sit here writing this the next morning I keep thinking about when I will go back. I went with a buddy late on a Saturday afternoon. We were seated right away. We were hungry so we ordered a lot of food.
First the crispy spring rolls. These were amazing. Filled with savory pork and shrimp and a served with a lettuce wrap and a side of sweet fish sauce. This is an example of why I love Vietnamese food. Sweet, salty, savory, crunchy… So many classic vietnamese flavors!
Next we got the Vietnamese sticky rice. This was sticky rice topped with grilled chicken, Chinese sausage, fried onions, and scallions. Why is sticky rice so good?
The Pho Sure was beef based pho with rare beef, brisket, and shin. This was a generous portion of pho, meat, sprouts, and noodles. Perfectly balanced (not too salty or fatty). I personally enjoyed this aromatic broth as served and did not add hoison or sriracha.
Finally we got the duck curry. Crispy duck served in a coconut based sweet curry with purple yams and taro. The duck was perfectly cooked, tender, and delicious. My only regret was that I was so full by the time I started eating this curry!
Service was friendly and fast! The bathroom was clean. The restaurant was clean. I can honestly say everything about this place was pretty spot on. There was bike parking outside.
I can not wait to go back! Go check it out!
A solid choice for Vietnamese food.
A small shop, maybe seating twenty people. There was only one waitress but she did a great job for a one person team. There's a banh mi bar up front. It's a very cozy place – something you'd expect from every restaurant in the West Village.
I was raised as Vietnamese American so I know my Vietnamese food! I had the vegetarian summer roll and veggie pho in beef broth (which is the first time I've seen pho like this – if you're grossed out by beef fat but love the broths, this restaurant in worth a try).
I grew up eating at Viet restaurants in Philly, and to be honest, I have yet to find a place in NY that compares. However, this is the best Vietnamese food I've had in New York City. Broth was rich and the tofu in the summer rolls was more flavorful than tofu's natural bland taste. People will write it off because the menu looks Americanized with the names of the items but the taste essentially stays true to the cuisine. I must say it's also pretty expensive for Vietnamese food but that's expected as it's a small shop probably paying among the highest rents for a place this size.
I'd come back for the banh mi sometime.
The wait at Saigon Shack was about an hour so we went on Yelp and walked the 10+ minutes to Pho Sure. FYI They use pad thai noodles for their pho. Service was slow even though the place is small and it was relatively empty.
I will not be back. If there's a wait at Saigon Shack, head over to Chinatown to satisfy your pho craving.
I was craving for a Viet Sandwich for lunch and found out about this place through Yelp! Given it's good ratings, I decided to give it a try!
I got the Classic Banh Mi Sandwich to go – total waiting time was only 5 minutes! I was slightly disappointed at the sandwich though.. It does not have the authentic taste to it – super bland although it has a nice crunch to it. I do like how the lady cut off the ends of the bread before giving it to me since the ends are more rough to eat sometimes.
3 stars for service and price ($7.00 is average for city).
I have been in this area many times but have never seen this restaurant. Today i was looking a little closer and discovered it. It is a cozy Vietnamese restaurant with several tables up front and more seating in the back-it is cash only-there is an ATM machine as you walk in. I was hungry but not overwhelmingly so- i got the classic banh mi sandwich consisting of pate, ham, pork slices, mayo, pickled daikon and carrots cucumber and cilantro. It was delicious-it can be made according to what your palate is used to: mild, spicy and ultra spicy with sriracha sauce and jalapenos. There is also a full menu of hot food: appetizers, pho, rice dishes, vegetarisn options-i would recoomend and return.
Cozy spot for a cold day. I had the vegetarian bun, vermicelli rice noodles with sprouts, green onions, tofu, peanuts, and a sweet chili sauce. Very tasty although noodles were a little hard, but better than the soggy alternative. Got the soy protein on the side, which I highly recommend, as its a little intense. Although its flavor is quite impressive, almost takes like meat – kinda freaks me out a little! That dish in particular is a little pricey at $13, but the meat pho dishes are moderately priced at $9. Service is fast and friendly. I would come back!
Can't wait to come back and try more of their food! So far everything today left a good taste in my mouth.
Calamari — $10 Sauce was good. Strong flavors, of sweet, and earthy, so a little goes a long way. Calamari itself were so good. The breading isn't crunchy or thick batter, but a breaded coating (think onion rings), and were perfect.
Nem Nuong Rolls — $8.5 I didn't really taste any sweetness of the pineapple or other veggies. The chicken was a strong flavor, it overpowered the other ingredients. But it was good. They weren't stingy with anything here. Hearty rolls.
Crispy Spring rolls — $8.5 Greasy, but what do you expect from something deep-fried? can't go wrong with spring rolls! This one actually had meat filling, instead of all cabbage and a thread of meat.
Classic Bahn Mi — I didn't care for the roll itself. Was too flaky and easily fell apart. I would have wanted a heartier roll, with more texture and chew, to go with the strong flavors of pate and ham. The filling overall was good. I would have loved more pickled daikon, but I'm a sucker for that.
A small spot, a few two seater tables/chairs when you walk in (maybe 4?), and then further in, it almost looks like an area for workers to eat, but there are booths for guests (where we sat for lunch). It was quiet on a Monday afternoon, so we were able to eat in peace, and leisurely. The manager/owner saw that my aunt and I were catching up and only came by to fill up our water, and eventually asked if we wanted our plates taken away/food boxed up. he was in no way intrusive or pressuring us to leave. Very polite and respectful.
Bathroom is small, but clean!
