  1. Hit or miss.

I first came here when the place just opened and the owners were always there to run the place with their family. The man of the family takes pride in the product, but when he's not there the food is very salty and just not that good.

They have a legit selection of food on the menu like chicken mole, chiles rellenos, burritos, tacos, nachos etc. The portions are not huge, but good enough. The service is good and the staff as a whole is very nice.

I've tried their tres leches cake here every time in hope that the milk that they pour on the sponge cake will be fresh and not taste like refrigerator, but it always does. I love tree leches cake a lot and theirs may have a fighting chance if it was truly fresh.

I heard they have a new restaurant that opened and I have not tried it yet. Truly hope the owner gets the message and tightens up this place a bit cause it really was a pleasure to eat here when they first opened.

  2. The best Mexican food I've had in NJ.  Taco Bell should be ashamed of themselves for placing themselves in the same category.

We came here with some friends and tried a number of dishes – guacamole, tacos, fajitas, chile relleno, and chicken enchilada with mole sauce.  Every dish was great, with the mole sauce, tacos and fajitas being the standouts.  The food tasted fresh and wasn't greasy (my usual complaint when it comes to Mexican food).  The service was extremely friendly and accommodating.   Definitely looking forward to heading back here in the near future.

  3. This place defines the statement "Diamond in the rough."

Passing by, you wouldn't notice it, nor pay it any mind…but inside will KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF. Not with regards to appearance, but with regards to quality of food.

The burritos are legit, and this is coming from someone who is a HUGE Mexican fan. The food is fresh, served quickly, and at a good time (you're not left waiting for long). The prices are pretty good too. My buddy told me about this place and took me here one day, and I'm glad he did. It's also good because it isn't somewhere that will be packed, since it's located in an odd place and can be hard to find.

If you're feeling Mexican and live near Springfield, I'd definitely check out Picante.

  4. Service is friendly and quite attentive.  Atmosphere is closer to hole in wall, but it is definitely give you the impression that they are clean.

Wanted the tongue tacos but they ran out.  Settled with the fish tacos.  Someone wrote that the fish tacos is a little fishy and I agree.  Don't think I'll get that again.

My hubby got the steak fajitas and that was one of the best fajitas I've had!  Can't say it's authentic cause fajitas are probably something created in the US but it was good!  The steak was well seasoned and very tender.  They gave us complimentary guac which was a nice plus.  I'll go back to try other items in the menu one of these days.

    BYOB.

  5. Not bad but expected more from this hole in the wall joint.  It looks like a small family owned place, which it probably is but didn't have that home style taste.  Overall, it wasn't bad and would probably go back.

Hated being nickeled and dimed for sides like rice and beans, guac.  Have to ask for the spiciest hot sauce, a bit bland without it.

  6. Picante is in a terrible place in Springfield. If you are driving by, you would never know its there. If you are walking by, you would never know its there, but its amazing.
I have only had a few things there, but everything was amazing. I am a huge fan of their burrito's, mainly because they grill or toast them a little bit so its extra crispy.
Also, their pico and chips is amazing, probably the best I've ever had. If you are in the area, don't waste your time at Chiptole, instead visit Picante for some real, home-made Mexican food.

EDIT! I have been going more often and bringing my friends, within the last month, I have been 4 times, almost weekly. I have been ordering the guacamole every single time, and besides my own guacamole that I make in my house, it is the best. I LOVE IT.

It has become a hit among my friends as I try to let everyone know about how great Picante is.
