Would give this place 10 stars if I could. It's to die for. The food is heavenly – I got the Lomo Saltado and it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Also, their white sangria rocks! Seems to be their most popular drink and it comes by the glass or by the pitcher.
Atmosphere was lively and there were very few tables open on a Thursday night. Now I see why. My only (very) minor complaint would be that I caught myself wondering where the waiter was a few times so that I could order more sangria!
Came here awhile back, but the food was amazing. This place is quite popular so would recommend that you make reservations and that all members of your party are there when you arrive.
We all shared a sangria for the table as we ordered the matador combo which comes with chicken, avocado salad, hot dogs, fries, beans, rice and plantain chips. With an appetizer, this combo is probably good for three people.
Will definitely come back if I'm around.
While this is one of the nicer Pio Pio restaurants in decor, I feel like the chicken is a bit dryer – not sure why. The sauce is as good as ever though – and it really is a nice change from the hole-in-the-wall on the UES.
Anyway, Pio Pio is great – the Matador Combo is enough food to feed 4 comfortably and for an excellent price.
I had heard a lot about Peruvian cuisine. We discovered Pio Pio while walking by one day. It looked interesting so we went over for dinner. We were seated right next to the kitchen which kind of destroyed the ambiance of the place. We started with Calamari which was just average. The red sauce was really good though. In mains we took the Peruvian fried rice with chicken, Picante de Cammarones, and Juanitas chicken. Somehow, nothing was impressive. It all seemed pretty average. May be we don't have the taste for Peruvian food but for now it's 2 stars.
Pio Pio is one of my favorite restaurants. I've been to several other locations but not this UWS one until recently. This location is more spacious than several of the others – comparable in size to the Northern Blvd. location. Enough seating for a large group actually. Friendly waitstaff too.
Same great super moist rotisserie chicken (pollo a la brasa) too. The best thing to order as always is the Matador Combo, which is enough to feed 3 people comfortably. You get the chicken with several sides: salchipapas (french fries and hot dogs), tostones, rice and beans, and avocado salad.
My girlfriend and I ordered a matador combo, figuring it's a good amount of food for two. It turns out we barely finished half of it. They had large portions of everything.
The sides (everything except chicken) were nothing to write home about. So on to the main subject — the chicken. Chicken was quite good with a well-spiced rub. The meat was moist — even the white meat breast portion. It wasn't too salty and the rub was uniformed spread out across the chicken. The fat portion of the chicken was on spot. Also, the chicken wasn't gigantic, which hints that it may not have been genetically modified too much nor didn't do any exercise for its entire life.
What amazing sangria!!! I loved the white sangria!!! I could probably just write that over and over and still give a 5 star review.
My roommates and I came here for our monthly dinner and were very impressed. They gave you a lot of food for your money, which is hard to find in Manhattan.
I enjoyed the special that night, it was a chicken in a cream sauce which was delicious and under 20$.
The ambiance is great and a real South American feel, with long picnic style tables and opening the long Windows in nice weather.
The service was on point and we felt very taken care of and not rushed at all, even when they were crowded.
This place is an experience! I would say that the food is good, but the characteristic is the huge portions and the simplicity of the food. It's a very popular place, so just be assured that there will be a wait.
Get the Matador combo. It's perfect for 2+ people. You get 2 whole rotisserie chicken (juicy), sliced hot dogs with fries (strange), sweet potato plantains, salad with avocado, beans and rice. It's a ton of food. Not my favorite type of food, but it's good for what it is.
BUT, the sangria was really good, both the red and the white.
Enjoy!
