MMMMMMMMM I love Peruvian chicken.
The food at this place is fantastic. The matador combo is enough to feed more than two hungry men with huge appetites. We almost made the mistake of order two whole chickens for two people before the waitress clarified what we were doing. The matador combo comes with one chicken, a side of rice/beans, avocado salad, and this dish that was literally french fries topped with cut-up hotdogs.. It was so much food.
Took one star away because I don't think they are adequately prepared for the weather. Sure this is a restaurant in Manhattan, but they should still have had a proper protocol. It looked like it was about to rain, and the restaurant was full and we opted to take a seat outside. Then it started to drizzle and they literally did not offer any way we could take a seat inside. So we ate in the light rain outside… I didn't care too much considering it was a warm summer day, but I'm sure others might be offended.
Pio Pio never disappoints me in terms of food, but the wait is always brutal on weekends! Came with a group of 8 people on a Friday night for a graduation dinner and had to wait over an hour to be seated. Bar area is extremely crowded with waiters and hostesses constantly trying to squeeze by.
Salchipapa (sliced frankfurters and fries) isn't really my thing, but went along with the masses and always give it a try.
Matador combo is awesome for about 4 people, or perhaps 3 very hungry people 😉 chicken is so moist and love the avocado salad and sides.
Delicious! Me and a group of 6 people got the chicken, paella, ceviche and sangria! The chicken is extremely juicy and tender I was expecting more flavor but the tenderness and texture did me in. I loved the paella. It's $30 for the paella which is quite expensive so we just split it. The ceviche was also a great choice, it was a very refreshing cold, sour combo, yum! We got all that and sangria to top it off. They have both red and white. Service is very attentive, decor is dim and poppin. Side note: this restaurant is huge.
This place gets packed. Thankfully I got here 15 minutes before my friend and left my name and we were good to go once he arrived.
They have outdoor seating, but it was so hot, we opted for the ac inside. We were seated close to the front by the window, one of the only sources of light. Otherwise I imagine it's quite dark inside. The walls are wooden panels and give the restaurant a nice vibe.
My friend and I shared the paella ($30) and still had some left over. I know they're known for the chicken, but I was craving this – no regrets. It was delicious!
My 3 friends and I came to Pio Pio for a last hurrah after a long-term project of mine was wrapping up. We had a fantastic dinner with SOOOO much food!!
After being seated, it took quite awhile for someone to come take our order, which was kind of a theme of the evening. Luckily we were caught up in chatting and enjoying our food and drinks so it didn't impact our experience too much.
We started with a pitcher of red sangria and a pitcher of white sangria to split between 4 of us (we were thirsty.)
For appetizers, we had the mixto cebiche which we all thought was great. The octopus, fish and shrimp were all very tender. The squid was a little too chewy. We also had the pimiento rellano which was pretty large, and filled with lots of meat and cheese, and served with a delicious green sauce, atop (I believe) polenta. Finally, we had the chicken empanadas which were super fantastic. The reddish salsa to dip the empanadas in was amazing.
For our main course, we decided to do the matador combo AND another seafood which came in creamy red sauce (I can't seem to find it on the menu now….). HOLY SMOKES this was sooooooo much food. We knew it would be a lot but literally it was enough to feed a group probably double our size.
At only $38, the matador combo is perhaps one of the best deals in NYC. It came with: rotisserie chicken, sweet plantains, avocado salad, rice and beans, AND salchipapa which is literally french fries and hot dogs…um yes please. This alone could have fed our group plus some. The other dish was similar to a seafood curry, and had a rich, creamy red sauce atop a bunch of seafood. There were two huge prawns in addition to shrimp, mussels, clams, and squid.
We barely made a dent in our food, and it did take awhile to flag someone down to grab some boxes. So there's a bit to be desired with service, but besides a couple small glitches we had a yummy, reasonably priced dinner.
If you're looking for Peruvian food in NYC – this is the spot!
This is one of my go-to spots. When folks come in from out of town and really want something different and delicious, Pio Pio always rises to the top. I've only been to this location, I've heard about others, but this one I love the vibe of, so why break a good thing? I love how unexpectedly big the dining area is. I visited Peru last August and the food here really does culinary justice to the homeland.
-The Limeno ceviche is phenomenal. It takes me back to Lima every time I have it.
-The Juanita's chicken is the BEST DAMN chicken I've ever had. Moist and juicy.
-Lomo saltado, while in Peru I had a few times with alpaca, this steak version is very good.
-Chaufa fried rice is so freakin yummy
-Camarones dish, unreal
-Seabass with the cilantro rice, beyond flavorful
-Maracuya sours literally take me back to a pisco bar in Cusco. Love them.
I can't say enough good things about the food here. So good. Can't wait for my next visit already. I've probably been at least 10 times to date.
I'm pretty sure I ate the best Peruvian chicken ever at Pio Pio.
The Pio Pio on 10th ave is an awesome venue. It's sooo large, very spacious, with many many seats. Definitely good for groups. The music is slightly on the louder end of things though. The service is great and the food is great. Pio Pio offers appetizers that are huge portioned. Aside from the chicken combos (which come with the best sides ever), the paella is pretty good as well. Prices will be comparatively higher than at other Peruvian chicken joints, but it's well worth it.
If I could rate this restaurant on the food alone – it would get 5 stars. The food was very good, but unfortunately other elements of the restaurant were lacking.
The space itself is very cramped. The tables are close together and you can easily touch the person sitting at a table next to you. This also means that you can hear their entire conversation and vice versa. It makes standing up and trying to navigate between tables both awkward and cumbersome. It's also loud. The music is loud and there were many people crowded in a small space. My friend and I had to shout to be heard over all the noise.
The restaurant is dark. The lighting is very dim and this is probably what they were going for but it's hard to see. The bathrooms are down a dark hall and the bathroom light turns off automatically – it's literally pitch black. I was fumbling on the wall trying to find a switch.
The service was my least favorite part. Our waitress came to our table twice. Once was to take our order and the last time was to ask about the check. That's it. I had to ask for more water three times from three different people. There's really no excuse for that.
Apparently they do online ordering with carry out – I suggest you go this route. Like I said – the food was great but the overall experience was lacking.
