best beer selection in the area! it sucks that they are closed on sundays. also there is no deli station. they also have some good deals on meats.
worth it if you live in the neighborhood and good for affordable staples like milk, deli meats, basic produce and frozen/canned items. interior is definitely out of date and it's somewhat of a depressing experience with the poor lighting, sparse patrons and dour cashiers. that said, it has good weekly deals if you're looking to stock up on pasta or condiments. Otherwise, TJs, Fairway, and Zabars round out your shopping needs in the area.
I really like Pioneer… I've lived in NYC a few years now, and have randomly stumbled into this place quite a few times, but not until recently have I been here on a fairly regular basis (I moved nearby a couple months ago), yet each time I come in I honestly feel as if I'm in "the old New York."
They have a large selection of margarines, yogurts, and pre-packaged/pre-shredded cheeses — it reminds me of huge supermarkets back in California where I grew up… but, the thing is, I really don't eat like this anymore — it must be all the "old-timers" and "comfort-seekers" that keep them in business.
Or perhaps the serious drinkers… At the end of every aisle is lots and lots of beer — today I asked "where's the bread?" and I was told "go past the Polish beer, and make a right at the Chinese beer" — they have six packs and twelve packs of things even a devotee (like myself) has never tried or even heard of… And, as if this weren't enough, there's also a whole aisle dedicated to beer — all the usual suspects (Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle, Duvel, Chimay, Sapporo, Tsingtao, etc.), but also rarer finds (Beelzebub, Samichlaus, Carnegie Porter, etc.) — all at very good prices.
Yes, it's a little out-dated, and the people behind the cash registers take their sweet time, but thankfully it's never crowded so it's easy to get in and out fairly quickly… I'm not a fan of Fairway, and I'd like to like Zabar's but don't, and Citarella really doesn't have much of a wide selection, so for me it's either going to be walking down to Whole Foods in Columbus Circle, or to the Gourmet Garage opening up around the corner from my new apartment, or just lots and lots of beer from here.
