  1. There is a sign that states that they have the best hamburgers in Manhattan. I can not deny that they do make an excellent burger, as I've tried a few kinds there. They are no frills: the cheddar burger doesn't even come with lettuce, onion, or tomato, just a perfectly chargrilled piece of perfect burger. I could eat a million burgers there. (Though, I'd probably space out my portions. Haha.)

    The service, though?

The last time I visited Piper's Kilt was on the 4th of July, when the beau, his friends, and I wanted some burgers for dinner. We entered to a bouncer checking IDs in an electronic reader. My beau, who is handicapped, needed to use the restroom. He would not let him enter until his ID was scanned, and the machine kept erroring on him. I understand the importance of checking IDs, do not get me wrong there. That being said, he is 29, looks about 10 years older than that, and was a handicapped person ready to patronize the restaurant with an immediate need to use a restroom. I'm sure it didn't bother him, but it bothered me. I greeted him in my usual friendly manner (despite being a bit peeved at him), and he did not make eye contact. Our waiter was awesome and wicked friendly, when when it came time to get our check, he was busy with another table. No problem! Another waitress was working and occasionally checked on our table. When one of our friends got her attention for the check, she looked at us, paused, and said, "Oh, I thought you needed something from me," and just walked away. I'm still not sure what happened there…haha…but it took us a while before she gave it to us. Finally, when I was calculating my tip for my meal, I was talking slightly aloud, curiously querying if my bill was correct because it seemed a dollar or two too high. She overheard me and stated, "No. It's right. Trust me," with a bit of a snap to her voice. I was a little taken aback, admittedly.

Maybe I'm just a sensitive person. Ha! But between the bouncer and that waitress, I'm weighing my options of when I want to come back, despite them having burgers that are droolworthy.

  2. Cozy neighborhood bar that has regulars and doesn't care if your knitting group hangs out all night as long as you keep ordering Guinness, burgers and onion rings.  All of which is not a problem.  They keep the kitchen open pretty late, 11pm, which is great if you want a late night bite to go with your beer.

  3. I love this place. It's exactly what you want in an Irish Pub. Divey, has food, quenches your after work needs in a casual way. The food is great, the staff does pretty well, and the beer is good. Nothing but good times.

  4. The burger here IS pretty good.  If you were looking for an Irish pub & the non-pretentious experience, you will definitely find it here.  Easy to get to, staff was friendly enough and food was pretty good and filling.  I'd return.

  5. Everyone has that inner desire for a local pub- that place you can go to when you are by yourself and want to spill your woes to the ever gracious bartender, where you can chat with locals about the goings on, where you can throw back a shot of fireball on a cold winter night, or where you can indulge in fries post bar-hopping with friends. Piper's Kilt is the epitome of such a pub.

As my good Irish luck would have it, Piper's Kilt is just around the corner and I ventured here over Christmas to a festive and fully decked out pub teeming with friendly regulars, a welcoming bartender (Katie), and solid bar fare. It boasts a happy hour with cheap prices but take note that they are brands you have never heard of. Georgi Vodka, anyone? Even so, the regular drinks are decently priced and yes, my friends and I were treated to that free fireball shot.

Their burger is renown but not partaking in a carnivorous lifestyle myself, I was happy to see a build your own salad option complete with avocado, artichoke hearts, and other delicious mix-ins. Great choice for a bar! That's not to say that I haven't had some deliciously cheesy mozzarella sticks there, which were served with a warm and delicious marinara sauce, but hey, at least the healthy option is there.

I highly recommend Pipers Kilt whether you live in waaaay upper Manhattan or not. Nothing beats that quintessential local haunt.

  6. They claim to have the "best burger in town"…and while it's a grand statement in NYC, it's quite close to being true. It is a damn good burger.

For $9.75, you get the Manhattan Burger (with Canadian bacon, swiss cheese, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato) and a side of pretty great fries. Throw in a $6 pint of beer (which is about $2 less than almost anywhere else in New York) you have a great meal on your hands. The meat is juicy and full of great flavor. It's sure to satisfy your burger craving.

They've been doing their thing for 24 years…so don't expect much to change anytime soon. And it doesn't need to. This is one of they best places to go in Inwood.

  7. Recent news of Piper's Kilt's imminent ownership transition has caused panic, but I don't know why. This place could use a shake-up. The burger is A-grade (though nowhere near as good as Inwood Local, Garden Cafe, or Tryon Public), but everything else is thoroughly mediocre. French onion soup was FINO (French In Name Only), and Mac and Cheese was godawful, straight from Chef Julian de Velveeta. Blech!

  8. I have worked next door to this pub/restaurant for several years and finally went for an early dinner with workmates.  The atmosphere is nice, although small, the bar is divided from the seated dining area which is nice.  The Burgers are well known here for being excellent. I had the veggie burger with blue cheese, and caramelized onions and it was delicious.
The consensus among my co-workers  was that the meat burgers were great- as expected.  A few quibbles the Soda/Pop  was flat and the pickles are terrible! -so mild they taste like cucumbers.  The molten choc cake is fairly good for the price.  Definitely worth a trip are you are in the area
