I'm sad to give this place a 2 because I had been looking forward to eating here for such a long time. Ever since the weather has been pleasant, every time I pass by there are tons of people eating outside. I tried to go once last year as a walk in and there was too long of a wait, so I was very excited to finally have a reservation to try it.
We sat outside and our drink orders were taken fairly quickly, however after 20 or so minutes had passed by and no one had even come to check on us, it became clear that our drinks were not coming. I eventually went inside to find any waiter to ask about our drinks, and he said he would get our waiter. About 5 or so minutes later our waiter finally came out with our drinks–so after 30 minutes of sitting we get our drinks and are able to order. We ordered both our appetizer and entree at the same time because we didn't want to have to do the whole song and dance of waiting another 30 minutes before we saw our waiter again.
I did not think that I needed to specify that just because we ordered our apps and entrees at the same time that we would like them brought out separately–I thought that was made apparent by the fact that one of them is an appetizer and the other is an entree. I guess I was wrong however, because after another long waiting period, we got both our appetizer and entree delivered to us at the same time…..
It's unfortunate because the food and drinks were pretty good. At this point however I was pretty fed up with the way we were being treated and asked for the check.
The most frustrating part of the whole experience was that we were never even offered an apology about the lack of communication/misunderstandings. Also the other tables around us did not seem to receive the same lack of service that we had.
I was really conflicted as to what rating to give Playa Betty's because I did really enjoy the food – but the service was so "meh" that I think I'm going to go with the A-OK rating.
I had two tacos – the Mexican Coke Shortribs and the Trailer Park. The Mexican Coke Shortribs has beef shortribs braised with Mexican Coke and topped with Cotija cheese nad Mexican Coke gravy. The shortribs were super tender and the Mexican Coke gave the otherwise savory dish a sweetness. The Trailer Park has fried Pimento Cheese fritters and is topped with braised collard greens and fried green tomato relish. I'm a huge sucker for pimento cheese, so this was like eating Mexican Mozzarella sticks!
We also split the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich, which our waitress helped us cut into halves – 4 pieces all together between the 4 of us. It was really, really good – if not a super messy.
However, service was so "meh" – we waited a really long time for our tacos. I'm not really sure why it took so long as all the ingredients for the tacos should've been cooked already and all you had to do was assemble them! Service was incredibly spotty the entire meal and we spent more time waiting for items than actually eating them!
Our waitress must have been new or something because the service was awful. We sat outside on a Tuesday night and ordered our drinks and an app. 15 minutes later we received our app and still no drinks. Another five minutes past and finally our drinks came. My friend and I ordered pina coladas (yes that's not on the menu, but if you can't make it correctly then you should probably tell me before hand). My drink came out like a watery mess (see picture).
After our app was finish it took the waitress another 20 min to ask if we wanted to order entrees. We all ordered tacos which were delicious. The southern girl taco was my favorite; slightly spicy so be prepared! The other wait staff did a good job of refilling our water bottle and clearing the table, until he took my friends drink and she was only half finished with it. After we discussed the problem with four other waitresses my friend finally got a new drink on the house.
Overall the food was pretty good but I don't know if I'll be back due to the service. There's so many other great restaurants in the area. Why not try one that the wait staff is a little more attentive.
This place is a good happening addition to the UWS
Hypes:
– Tacos tacos and tacos – Try the baja fish, the al pastor, the avocado, and the mexican coke short ribs
– "tot"chos – try them. they're good.
– love the vibe – casual, great for groups, gets a little loud, with plenty of seating
– salsas are delicious
Gripes:
– Service – slow
– Guac – too much $ for mashed avocados and toppings that you have to add in and assemble. Could be a hit or miss depending on what you put in it.
I came here on a Friday night with two friends. When I was arrived, it was pretty crowded and told there was a wait of 30 minutes. We got a drink at the bar and they texted us when our table was ready. It was about 30 minutes, not a bad wait at all. We were able to get a table outside which was great because it's pretty loud inside. In the middle of our meal, it started to rain but the serves were quick to extend the awning, which we appreciated. We started with the original queso and chips. It was delicious. Then I had the al pastor taco, which was pork and the baja Mahi Mahi one, which had fried fish. They were both delicious. Overall, the tacos were pretty good and so were the drinks. I would definitely return.
Came here with some friends after a spinning class, so we were all starving. Many of my friends that live in the UWS recommended this place, so here we were.
Looking at the menu, it makes you want to salivate.
For apps, we shared Tot'chos and Don't you die on me chico. The Totchos are just nachos but tater tots instead of tortilla chips. It was a good, but I think i prefer tortilla chips just for the texture. The tots with the mushy toppings was just mush on mush. The Don't you die on me Chico is a chicharrone or fried pork rinds. This was good but a bit too cheesy for my taste. It masked too much of the pork flavor.
For entrees, i ordered 3 tacos: baja fish, veracruz fish, and carne asada. They were good. My fave was the baja fish because the fish was fried perfectly. However, for $5 per taco, it is quite expensive. Perhaps if they offered 2 tacos for $6, then it will be more worth it.
For $5 per 1 taco, i just can't justify myself for regularly eating here when there are other places that have more bang for your buck for similar quality.
This is REALLY mediocre Mexican food. Like really mediocre. I really wasn't impressed. I ordered a margarita with mezcal and it was pretty flavorless. Maybe just super watered down with ice melt or cheap flavorless vodka was used, not sure. But it was a $12 glass of basically flavored water. My friends and I split chips and guac, which was kind of cool. They gave you bit of toppings you could throw in: onions, cilantro (not fresh), jalapeños, habaneros, and pomegranate. I have never in my life put pomegranate in guacamole but it was delightful. We also got the plain queso, which was a congealed tasteless mass. I ordered the two vegetarian tacos: the pimento cheese curd and the avocado. Again, the only thing I tasted was the tomato, onion, and cilantro on top. I couldn't taste anything of the actual taco. I was seriously disapointed in this place. I wouldn't recommend coming here.
I literally wanted to try everything on their menu. I went with a friend during lunch and it was not too busy. We got seated quickly and immediately ordered the guacamole 2.0. You get to craft your own guacamole with many different ingredients. It's actually pretty fun and you get to customize it towards your liking. It also comes with chips. For the entree, we ordered the tacos. My favorite was al pastor. They tacos are not much different when compared to other Mexican restaurants. The churro ice cream is a must for dessert. It gets very messy to eat. If you've never tried this or something similar to it then it is a must. Getting the check took a really long time at the end. They got pretty busy and our waitress sort of forgot out us…My friend actually got up to ask the waitress for the check. Anyway, I do recommend this place! Totally worth a trip there.
