Pollo Campero
“Good chicken, it's very tasty and not greasy like KFC or Popeyes, the fried plantains are good and so are the french fries, they have a salsa bar which is great to put on anything.”
“First time eating pollo campero in the United States; I ate in the past back in El Salvador and I can say the recipe is quiet the same.”
“The only thing that might be annoying are the vendors who come in and try to sell you DVDs and other items.”

Now that the Washington Heights location (yelp.com/biz/pollo-campe…) has closed its doors for good, it seems fitting for Corona to be the home of the only Pollo Campero in NYC. If it were exclusive to Latin hoods, we could probably stand to have a few more. But considering how (fast food) chains are in NYC, my faith in this actually happening isn't very high.
My first time here, I couldn't help but liken it as a Latin version of Jollibee. Similarly to that Woodside location (yelp.com/biz/jollibee-wo…), it's busy, spacious, and undoubtedly fast food-riffic. I wish I could say the place was spotless, but the grimy surfaces and ghastly bathrooms would suggest otherwise.
The campero fried chicken [aka pollo tradicional] is sort of like KFC's original recipe. Then of course, there is the extra crispy option and the grilled option, both of which are hot and spicy. I dig the crispy skins and juiciness of the meat for the crispy versions, but any of the grilled chickens have been more dry than not. Expect to cough up $6 or so for any of the combos – the breast / wing or legs / thighs seem to be the most common, yet a lot of patrons here tend to go with some sort of crazy family pack ($30+)]
Come for the chicken, skip the sad sides. Fast food sides are already bad enough, but PC's "Latin sides" are all low grade versions of moros, yuca fries, and platanos. Their maduro (sweet plaintain) is almost candied bacon sweet and I'd recommend avoiding their cole slaw or caesar salad altogether. The same goes for their lowly desserts (avoid the tres leches and flan!), but this is no surprise.
There's not much to report on the service front. Zombie employees tend to roam the counter and slow maintenance staff leads to lots of unattended tables (people, just clean up your own mess) and might be the major reason why the bathroom is the way that it is. Come to think of it, get your food togo.
Another missed review because I had this a long time ago, but not forgotten and here it is. I was glad that it's not another American franchise fast food. When I hunt for food, I want to try something different. It keeps me from touring the city of NY where talent, varieties and creativity flourish in every block. One of the reasons, why NYC is the most travelled by – our cultural influence is what makes the city so unique and that's why it is considered the World's City. Everything is here.
The first thing I asked was, 'where is this restaurant originally from'?. I think I remembered it was from Ecuador or Guatemala? Wow, they travel for a chicken! What a celebration! I ordered to try different kinds in the menu, and I was satisfied. I would not mind going back here. I plan to have this food again soon.
Imagine Spanish people open up their own KFC and give you plaintains and charge you even more…ok…open your eyes…you are here!
KFC move on over. This Guatemalan fast food joint is sure to keep you coming back for more. This is my second time here & I have to say this place has the best fried chicken in the history of fast food places. Prices are reasonable. Try the Camperitos, chicken nuggets that are crispy, tasty, and a good size. Can you believe they have plantains, tortillas & rice? Wasn't a fan of the Cole slaw or beans or the dessert menu so you may want to skip that. Awesomeness!!! Service was quick and everyone was friendly. Give it a try it's delish.
this is some tasty fried chicken. way better than kfc or popeyes. plus they offer tostones, and other tasty side dishes. yum.
Uh, what's the big fuss? I remember a few years back when we were departing Miami to go back to NY, we saw this chick carrying a big box of Pollo Campero chicken back. We thought, man that must be some GOOD CHICKEN!
After listening to people talk endlessly about how great this chicken is, we decided to go for it.
This is NOT a good neighborhood. It's in Corona, if that means anything to you. Basically, we were worried about our car sitting on the street for the brief 20 minutes that we were in the joint.
They have Yucca fries. So I asked her, what's a yucca? She showed me the picture, I still didn't know what a yucca was? I said, is it like a potato? She goes, no it's a yucca. ?!?!?!?!?!
We ordered a few pieces of chicken and yucca fries and the rice. The chicken was greasy, the yucca fries and rice were bland. HOW IS THIS GOOD?
I will not come back here again.
I love trying out different fast food places. I came for dinner to take home after work. I had the 2 piece chicken with fries, tortilla and the chicken empanada. It was okay typical for fast food chicken. The people working there were nice. The prices are average.
First time eating pollo campero in the United States; I ate in the past back in El Salvador and I can say the recipe is quiet the same. The spice and crunchy chicken's taste is delicious. The restaurant has a great costumer service very courteous and smiling at all time. One more thing you will noticed that there is a pollo campero nearby it is the spice odor from outside.
