  1. Dear Pollos Mario,

You only earned 3 out 5 stars my first time around and we somehow wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt (well, not me so much as the people I was with). This time, however, you have been demoted to 2 stars with good reason.

My chicken was good. That was really the only part. The Yuca which was one of the things that you had done very well last time was terrible this evening. I fear your chef just keeps assorted batches in the deep-fryer basket resulting in a plate of undercooked and overcooked pieces that I had to sift through. Bobbing for apples is fun around Halloween, but not bobbing for fried Yuca. Maybe this is a Colombian tradition I am unaware of?

Also, I am not a fan of being rushed. Your busboy almost took the salad bowl out of my hands as I was still eating. I had to finish it holding my bowl as the waiter plunked my food down in front of me. He then tried to take M's salad and he hadn't even touched it yet because he was still eating this appetizer. What's the hurry? We had ordered another pitcher of your overpriced and watered down Sangria. Clearly, we weren't trying to scarf our food down as fast as we could.

In conclusion, I don't think is working out between us and any more visits might result in the dreaded one star. I tried to to make it work, but I think it's time for us to move on.

    Regretfully,

    Mandy & Co.

  2. Live a few blocks away from this joint and I am damn glad I do.

Things I typically order when coming with my family:
19 – ARROZ A LA MARINERA – Seasoned rice with seafood on top of it. Tastes freaking good and will fill you up real good.

22 – CAZUELA DE MARISCOS – Very creamy casserole with seafood in it. If you think rice w/ bean is good, try pouring some of the cream into your rice. Heaven on a plate.

35 – BANDEJA MARIO – platter of meat with rice/beans/plantains. Need I say more?

This place gets pretty packed so expect a bit of waiting when you come here on the weekends!

  3. Had a dinner meeting here with a friend. This place is absolutely the bomb. If your tired of eating the same old stuff. Come here and give your palette a world. The Skirt steaks, the red snapper, the Yucca, the rice and beans, the fried pork belly. It's endless with their dishes! I recommend practically everything on the menu. The service is great. The place is big enough for groups and the food will keep ya belly warm!

  4. Must get the Entrana! (grilled skirt steak). I believe it was $27? The portion is huge so I suggest you share this with someone else. It comes with rice and beans and a side salad. Oh yeah, there's also potatoes served next to the steak. I love maduros so you must get that also! The fried yuca is good too. The place gets packed so expect a wait. Grab a drink at the bar. They are less busy after 9:30pm. The waiters and hostess were all so friendly! Very spacious but the lighting is a little too dim for me.

  5. Massive amount of food for reasonable prices. Wife had a Mojito and it was perfect. Not too sweet but sweet enough and a perfect amount of mint leaves that don't clog the straw as you drink. It just makes me angry when that happens. I had a dish which comprised of a large amount of chicharron, steak, pork chop, chicken, fries, beans and rice, fried sweet plantain and a salad for $18.25. Serious!! My wife just had the chicken which they specialize in and it shows. Very juicy and flavorful through the whole bird. The food was excellent and the service was great. Place is large and is usually quite crowded but not over bearing. I have ordered delivery from this place in the past and have never been disappointed so going to eat in for the first time was no surprise just how good it was.

  6. I love any of the Pollos Mario restaurants. There are quite a few locations in Queens including in Astoria, Middle Village, 3 in Jackson Heights. Been to every location. My BF and I love the variety, price and portion. We like portions that are large enough to share and/or have leftovers.

The Middle Village location is the newest and largest of all the Pollos Mario in Queens. Been to this location a few times and it's always very busy at this location. I also noticed the Middle Village location is the slightly more expensive than the other Pollos Marios. Finding street parking is a bit difficult sometimes because of the popularity of this restaurant.

I seem to always order the Bandeja Mario or a.k.a. Mario's Special Platter at all the Pollos Mario locations. This platter comes with a thin grilled steak (they cook it well done, it's going to be on the dry side), pork loin (excellent-very moist), Chicharron (fried pork skin, eat quickly!), 1/4 chicken (I always ask for dark meat), a generous side of  rice and beans, fries (which I always ask for a substitute, maduros which is sweet plantains), and for making this plate look healthy…some salad. It feeds two people with leftovers!!! Or what I have done is take most of it home and have it for the next day for lunch and dinner!!!!

I love maduros very much and it is very nice of them to let me substitute.

This by far is not my favorite location but I would go here if I was nearby.

  7. Meh….can't say ANYTHING good about the chicken that would ever make me want to go back…it's edible, that's about it. Walked over from Queens Blvd, should've listened to my hub and got Pio Pio…on the other hand, the salchipapas were deelish. That's the reason for the additional star. The homemade green hot stuff was not good at all. Yuck. Will NOT be going back.

  8. I have no idea what the rave is about here. I've had better Colombian food on Roosevelt and in Colombia (obviously).  Service is super fast, I felt that I was being rushed from seating down to the time we left. I was still eating my food and a bus boy came with a to-go box asking me if I wanted my food to be packed -__-, dude I'm still biting into my food NO. The sangria was straight from Carlo Rossi box, another big no-no in my book.
