The food was great here. I had the chicken parmagian. The chicken was moist. The dessert was great. I have never had mint tortufu. The waitress was very nice and was very helpful.
Excuse me bartender, what's this fly doing in the foam of my beer?
The backstroke of course!
I think not, as I picked the dead fly out of my beer and placed it on the cocktail napkin quietly. I was at a business dinner and did not want to cause a scene.
Drinks aside (Alcohol kills germs and I wanted my Long Island Blue Point… When in Long Island…), Poppy's is a charming place. It's simple and small. I went on a weeknight and I find it hard to imagine this place gets PACKED on the weekends. There was about 10 other people in the restaurant, many who are locals since one of my coworkers ran into his neighbors. Poppy's is the kind of restaurant no one outside of Floral Park knows about but really, the food is so good, it is worth making a destination.
We skipped the menus and had the chef Mo start us off with appetizers of brushetta, arancini, lemon agnolotti (giant lobster ravioli moons) and Antipasto Fantasia (bresaola, soppresata, aged provolone, roasted peppers, arugula, and aged balsamic). That alone was enough to feed an army, or in our case a party of five. My favorite was the agnolotti, arancini, and antipasto. I hear the the antipasto and arancini are very Sicilian. Mo is from Sicily.
For entrees we all went for the specials. The red snapper was sold out so they cut us a new swordfish. I chose the Chicken alla Turolese (panko crusted with fontina cheese and prosciutto) served with mushroom spetzle. Spetzle isn't very Italian but the chef trained with a German and he learned the specialty. Plus Mo was eating chicken for dinner. I'll have what the chef is having! Good enough for Mo, good enough for me. The plate was also big enough to serve four people. I ate half and brought the leftovers home.
We ended dinner with cheesecake and the pear and almond tart. I was not wowed with the desserts as they were quite ordinary and the tart was getting stale and soft. But the main dishes? Wow, oh wow.
Saturday night and Bonnie G. And I fired up the GPS and entered Poppy's address and were on our way. Finding this place turned into a search for the lost world! Going down Jericho Turnpike in Floral Park the nice voice says turn left turn right turn left go .2 miles and there it will be….It was not as easy as it sounds…but when we found it located on a quiet little street in what seemed like a residential area we realized this is a locals secret spot !! What a find…This little hidden Gem is a real winner. We entered to find a large bar with lots of friendly folks standing and sitting enjoying themselves. A really sweet lady greeted us and took us to this smallish dining room in the back past the bar…It was crowded but our two top was beckoning for us to sit and join in the festivities. We were quickly approached by our server; Mary Beth…a real sweety that greeted us like old friends and we had an instant bonding! There cant be more than 12 tables back there but that made it that much more intimate…the type of place you can bring a date or your significant other. There was a cacophony of sound that allowed all conversations at your table to stay at your table cause you cant hear the banter above the din. We really had a wonderful first impression which stayed with us during our meal. We ordered a bottle of Rosso and Bianco Coppola Chardonnay which went great with our meal and was $33.
For appys we ordered Fried Calamari and Baked Clams. The Calamari was thin rounds fried crisp with a really tasty maranara sauce. The Baked Clams were whole and delicious…could have used some more garlic sauce to dip bread in.
Our mains were also winners..I had Lamb Shank in a heavy wine reduction with a side of Capellini in Clam Sauce, which while good needed some more liquid.
Bonnie G. had her old standby; Veal Parm with spaghetti also a winner.
The only thing better than the food was the SERVICE!! Mary Beth took such good care of our needs and kept smiling which kept the mood festive and the spirits lite. No rezzys for less than 5 people so come around 9pm and you should be ok. For real…you have to crank up your GPS and visit Poppy's Place.
One of the best hidden jems around!
Not only do I love the place it is my parents favorite date night spot.
From table service to quick at the bar – Everyone is always smiling
Food is AMAZING and they are very accommodating!
I recently fell in love with this place, even though id been here quite a few times thru the years! Not sure what happened, but this place is Dynamite! Short ribs are amazing, "moe's" pasta dishes are incredible, and the Calamari Cala-delo is a must. Tiny place (maybe 10 tables) but the food is impeccable, and I'd send anyone there without hesitation.
Keep it up Poppy's, you may be my #1 for the time being, hope you can keep it up!
Meh. I got whole wheat penne here, and it was rather bland. The sauce was watery, and not all that flavorful. For the price, it was lacking in all departments.
The restaurant isn't all that big, either, so I ended up in the far corner, right near the entrance to the kitchen. It was a little awkward, especially since you have traffic passing you by the entire time.
Beer selection wasn't all that great, either. Pretty lackluster all around.
