Oo-kay…I'm a little grossed out by this place. My husband, mother in law and son came here after I purchased a voucher for four which included two apps, four entrees and two desserts.
We were taken aback by the view on the patio of the outside dining area and with the weather, it seemed perfect. We were seated fairly quickly and were immediately greeted with complimentary bruschetta and big, crusty bread. Our server took out orders and the apps came out pretty quick.
We decided to share Fried Calimari and a Caprese dish. The calimari is big and little overly breaded and fried but it tasted ok. We started to eat the caprese and finished two of them, when I stopped my husband from cutting into the third because I noticed a think hair, sitting in the oil on the plate. I shrieked at him to stop and showed him the hair. When I told the wait staff, they were unconcerned and didn't ever apologize for the inconvenience or disgusting nature of the event. The server just took the hair and walked away.
A second came to claim the plates and asked if we were sure we weren't going to est the last caprese on the plate. I told him that we don't want it and that there was a hair in the plate and he just went about clearing tye plates off of the table.
By the time my entree came, I was not at all interested in esting. I was so turned off and disgusted, not only by the hair sitting in the food but by the way they handled the situation.
I will never come back here. Ever.
I find that most times, when using vouchers, I find little dining gems that I would not otherwise have ever known about and am genuinely happy to have an opportunity to try out a new place or cuisine and even return to pay full price but then, I have found that some places utilize the help of Living Social and Groupon because they just wouldn't have any business otherwise. I am originally from the Bronx and even went to school on City Island. I guess there was always some unspoken reason as to why my family and I never dined here. Increasing foot traffic may increase sales shor-term but in order to maintain high patronage, you need to improve the handling of your business.
Customer service can go a long way and thanks to sites like Yelp, so can word of mouth.
We purchased a groupon deal and headed over after making a reservation for 6:30 on a Thursday evening. We had the surf and turf dinner for four, but had 5 adults and one toddler in our party. The original groupon included two bottles of wine, two appetizers, four entrees and two desserts. We ended up just purchasing my daughter and our extra guests entrees separately.thy basically allowed us to order anything off the entire menu-with the exception of a few items. Everyone enjoyed the food and the wine was yummy. We ordered the hot and cold anti pasta appetizers, they were good but I wish they included more of each item vs many different items. The hot platter had one clam, a handful of calamari, two eggplant roll ups, and like 2 sautéed shrimp. Wasn't enough for our party- but if we were informed of that we would have ordered more. The entrees were really good, and the view out on the back patio is wonderful. The waiter definitely didn't want to be there and disappeared half way through our dinner. We kind of had to just ask anyone walking by for anything we needed. The service in general was lacking- definitely need to work on that guys!
This is my first groupon experience on the restaurant deal, so I don't know if this is normal or it's odd that customers who bought the groupon still have to pay the tax,
I thought it should be included in the groupon value.
I am surprised that the billed came out and saw I have to pay the tax ( and the tax was based on the original food & wine price) and the tax is significant. On our bill they charged us $14 on the tax, so basically you have to expect to pay about $40 – $45 extra ( including tips & tax ) for a party of 2 people.
The food is not bad but not outstanding, the steak is especially disapointing, it's not Filet Mignon. Of course it doesn't have to be a filet mignon to make a good steak, but the one I had that day is just not good.
The highlight of the day is definitely the lobster tail, I almost stole all of the lobster tail from my husband's plate, it is delicious!
The service is good, too, there are several waiters taking care of our table that day and they are all very polite and attentive.
Overall, I think I paid FAIR price for the dinner, but I don't feel like I really got a great deal.
My friend and I came to Portofino to use our groupon coupon before it expired. I was a bit reluctant about this spot since the reviews werent that great. I dont eat seafood, so an italian spot is more up my alley. My friend had the shrimp something which she said was okay. I had the chicken scaraperelli with a side of pasta which was very delicious. I ate everything off my plate. The prices were reasonable and the staff were friendly. The place looks more family oriented and not too modern. I would love to go again in the summer time to enjoy the outdoor seating. It was a bit cold in there and we didnt feel the heat until we were on our way out.
Ok so I wouldn't have tried this place with the regular priced menu, but I had a great groupon, and from the moment I walked in the service was top notch! The food was very good, I had the Talapia and my daughter had the chicken alla marsala, the cannoli was so yummy. I think in this economy considering this place is in the Bronx they should have deals all the time. The view of the water and the service makes the experience worth while.
Visited this restaurant about a week ago with a friend. Upon our arrival it appeared that this restaurant was not the most popular on the island but the staff was friendly. The restaurant itself was pretty large with an outside deck that would be great to dine on in the warmer months.
The food itself was pretty good but not outstanding and the prices were reasonable. The bruschetta tasted pretty fresh as well. I would return in the future but not for the seafood.
