Poseidon Bakery

“Poseidon is known for rolling their own filo dough, a very laborious process, and specializes in several different kinds of baklava.”

“If you have never tried greek pastries before, I would definitely recommend the simple, classic tyropita and spanakopita, meaning cheese pie and spinach pie.”

“Their assortments of honey soaked greek pastries are all good~but their Easter bread is really special.”

  1. No seating, just display cases and cases of baklava and other delicious greek treats.

They also have large platters of spinach pies and such.  They don't cater – as in they do not deliver and do not heat it up for you.  They will sell you giant trays of delicious baklava, etc that you can pickup and take home though.

The person behind the counter told me that many caterers in NY will buy from them to use at the events they are hosting.  Might be a good place to stop and pickup a tray of something yourself for a dinner party, event nearby.

We bought 4 different pastries (I'm ashamed to say I don't rememer the names!)
The baklava was excellent.  I also really enjoyed one pastry that had what looked like crunchy strings on the top – the texture was very nice.  The all pistachio pastry was a little more meaty and less sweet than the others.  Lastly, we had a spinach and cheese flaky dough pastry that was amazing.

Would definitely come back and simple some more treats.

  2. This place is like walking into someone's home, warm and friendly. They have a huge selection of different types of sweets, I picked out seven different kinds and three of them I really enjoyed, the galaktobureko, and the triangular shaped one and a round one with pistachio on top (idk the names). The others were good too. The lady who served me was so nice, she let me take my time and told me what each dessert was and put on a fresh pot of coffee for me! Next time I want some greek desserts I'll be back.

  3. Poseidon bakery is a treasure.  The Galaktobouriko from this shop is one of the three best things I've ever eaten in my life, no joke.  Just incredible how filled with flavor it is.  It's a near-perfect food item.

The baklava is very good and comes in many different forms – flat, rolled, etc.  The Finikia are outstanding and if you haven't had them before, you should give them a try.  The savory items are excellent as well – Spanakopita and Kreatopita are my favorites.  If there's any weak point, it's the strudels – the strudels are 'only' very good instead of incredible and amazing like everything else.  But as I said, they're still pretty good.

Poseidon claims to be the only bakery in america that hands makes their phyllo dough from scratch every day.  After a quick google search, I can't find any other place that does.  They're simply the best.  A well-deserved five-star rating.

  4. Sorry, 3 stars. I had tried this place before I went to Pi Bakery in Soho, I might have given Poseidon definitely 4 stars. Spinach pie, meat pie, custard pie (or called 'galaktoboureko')… I'd rather go to Pi Bakery in Soho..

I took a long time for me to stop by this place after 4 years I lived in Hell's Kitchen. Poseidon opens from Tuesday to Saturdays, from 9am to 7pm, so it was hard to stop by for those like me who take off work late night. I finally stepped inside at close to 7pm on Tuesday evening. The bakery inside is decorated with kids' drawing and family photos, all of which seem to show that the bakery has been long run by a family owner.

Pies were good, price was decent. But not amazed. Maybe I was too addicted to Pi Bakery.

  5. Just had the most amazing baklava and spanakopitas ever! This place is such a hidden gem. The staff is lovely and they have so many incredible options to choose from including multiple types of baklava.

  6. Location: poseidon really stands out in Hell's Kitchen area. Their light blue sign has been attracting my attention for a long time. But I do not know why I never pluck my courage to take a look at the store. Nevertheless, finally, I am here. This place is pretty small and i doubt that there is any seat available to sit and eat. So it is a perfect place to grab and to go.

Food: of course, I tried their meat pie as well as spinach pie. In addition, I got the pineapple cheese strude?! I love their meat pie but I am addicted to the cheese pineapple thing. It is not too sweet, creamy, stuff with texture, omg, the best thing I ever had so far among all bakeries in NYC. The only thing I wish they could improve is their spinach pie. I really would love to have more cheese textures mixed with spinach. Oh, and the crust is cripsy and de'icious. I am really thinking about going back again and craving some more.

Price and service: the guy is nice and welcomg and answered so many my questions. My only concern with this store is their price. Although portion is big, the price is still pricy as a bakery shop.

Overall: a 4.5 stars. And by the time I am writing my review, I am already thinking about going back and have some again. Try some or you will miss a big surprise

  7. Definitely a go-to place for filo dough-based pastries and pies. By pies, I don't mean the sweet kind, but awesome spanikopita as well as the all-cheese version of it, too. Don't miss the galaktoboureko (creamy custard pie) and, of course, the baklava. I love the old-fashioned decor, including the antique cash register that still works!

  8. Had the spanakopita, rolled baklava and apple strudel for breakfast shared by two. The flavors were rich and authentic.
