Potala Fresh Momo
“Potala's dumplings are miniature versions of their Tibetan cousins, slightly larger than a golf ball.”
“I don't care if you have been to Tibet and had momos there and its shaped differently and "authentic" or whatever.”
“The beef was super juicy and well seasoned and the dough was steamed with just the right silky smooth delicate texture.”

Tasty. Delicious. Filling.
A great stop for a quick bite! Growing up in Cali you don't really encounter much food trucks serving authentic ethnic food, so never encountering Tibetan Food before, my husband brought me try some Momo's here when I moved to NY.
My first reaction, I though that it would be a tough dough with meat stuffed inside. Boy was I wrong!! The dough is a soft outer layer with flavorful juicy ground beef stuffed in the inside. This stuff is great! Oh, and don't forget to add the spicy hot sauce to make the experience even better!! Mmm…
Yummy food that will keep you full at $5 for 8 pieces makes Potala a great choice. Specially if you want to escape or try something a bit different from the surrounding Indian spots, this place is a good alternative!
The momos are really tasty and I would get them all the time since they taste great and also made fresh. The person who works this cart was so nice and rather quick. The only thing I couldn't handle was the extreme spicy, lava hot red sauce they give you with these momos. I'm sure people love it but wow! I like spicy food but I give these people credit for dousing their momos with this sauce. I think the price was like 8 momos for $5. I'm not totally sure if this.
I've only had momos in three different places and they've all been in Jackson Heights in the Tibetan/Himalayan nook by the 74th and Roosevelt traffic hub (think 7/F/R/M/E trains as well at Q32, Q33 and Q49 buses).
This cart is by far my favorite. They're always freshly prepared and generously stuffed with deliciously seasoned ground beef mixed with either cilantro or parsley (it's tough to tell).
One order costs a measly $5 for 8. This is pretty much a good sized meal which will leave you feeling full, but not grossly so…unless you're a dude and really need to wash down 16 of these delicious suckers.
Dipping sauces include a white cream sauce that is very reminiscent of a watered down sour cream, regular soy sauce and what may be a homemade spicy/tangy bright orange colored sauce.
At first I found the hot sauce to be a bit much for my spicy tolerance but it's tangy flavor and vinegar content eventually made it grow on me…especially when mixed with the white cream sauce – this mix compliments the beef filling perfectly.
5 stars for this fanfreakintastic momo cart! MOMOS! {3
Tasty meat dumplings.
$5 for 8.
It's not really a deal as I often like to compare it to the deal that AA Plaza ; ( once had.
But it is quality momo.
Juicy.
Although, the lady forgot to ask me if I wanted the complimentary beef soup that came with the momo.
I probably would have said no anyway but I would have liked to had that option…
I would come here as more of a snack before going across the street to Sammy's Halal and maybe a return trip to here for after dinner momos.
Good Stuff.
I used to work an overnight shift around here and this cart was one of the few things open at 2AM, my lunchtime, besides the halal carts and the taco trucks further east on Roosevelt ave. One night around 2am I got an order of momos. I didn't know what they were but I was starving. I think it was about $5 for 8 and they came with a chili sauce. The momos had opaque grey beef fat, like that from a burger, coming out of where the dumpling was pinched together. Ok, kind of gross but I just wiped it off. I took a bite of one momo and it was a bit tough and dry. It tasted like a microwaved hamburger, no real flavor. Even with the hot sauce it tasted pretty bad and I wasn't able to finish it. It's not like I don't have the stomach for it because I went and got some halal cart "lamb" over rice a block over because I was still starving. My experience may have been negative because it was late at night and I'm sure those momos had been sitting there for hours. I don't think I would try it again but how often do you try Nepali food? Give it a try yourself during regular human hours, maybe you'll like it like the majority of other yelpers.
Momos are nice, I ordered chicken Momo, $5 for 8 dumplings style Momo. It was a bargain. As for the taste, I prefer dumplings.
I honestly have to thank Stephy P. for christening me and popping my Momo cherry at this place. These are the kinds of things I get down to on my days off from work! So worth the adventure! Potala Fresh Momo comes from a street cart in a little court yard area square in the middle of Jackson Heights. It's unassuming and you wouldn't think much of it in an area riddled with these delicious little dumpling buns. Momos for those that don't know are a Tibetan and Himalayan dumpling stuffed with usually either beef or chicken. This place had only beef which is totally fine by me and charged only $5 for 8 dumplings, which is a deal because these are a little bit bigger and rounder than other dumplings I've had in Chinatown. The beef was super juicy and well seasoned and the dough was steamed with just the right silky smooth delicate texture. Don't forget the sauce! I love sauce! They have both a white cream sauce, soy sauce, and a pretty damn spicy hot sauce.
Fair warning: These bad boys come out piping hot! This was my first momo experience, and I found them to be very similar to soup dumplings, just much doughier. This also means that they're less likely to break, which is a problem I often encounter when eating soup dumplings. Another difference is they use beef instead of pork, so even our non-pork eaters can get in on the fun!
It's $5 for 8 and it's pretty darn filling, I ate 4 and that was a pretty good sized snack already. The beef on the inside had a ton of flavor, but some bites were a little too doughey for me and not as juicy as I would have liked. A great alternative snack/meal if you're in the area.
I came a second time during a food crawl, and they were definitely less doughy and juicier than the first time. I'll be back to give it a third try and see what the norm is.
