One of the best way to finish an evening of eating in the 74 St. Jackson Heights area is a visit to the sweet shops. There are dozens of them!
My peeps and I got adventurous and wondered into a Premium Sweets on 73 St. for dessert and tea.
This place was previously called Alauddin Sweets & Restaurant.
You know you walked into an authentic Middle Eastern & West Asian place when everyone stares at you (well, just me). Probably everyone in the place had an Indian, Pakistani, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka background.
The restaurant is really setup like a cafeteria-style eatery. Pick your food and the waitress will put it on a tray and you grab a table.
There is a buffet-style hot food setup on the left when you enter where some the food looks familiar to me; fried fish, fried rice, mix noodles. There are many stuff that I have never seen but we are here for sweets.
We ordered desserts-
Gulab jarmun (brown dough balls in sugar syrup) $3 (tasty and sweet)
Laddoo- white sugary – mini balls $3 (overdosed on sugar)
Rasgullah- white dough balls with condensed milk $3 (my favorite; milky, doughy and not too sweet)
Tea with milk $1 (I really needed this to stabilize myself with all the sugar)
I was sugar high for hours!!!
Tip- there is no menu!
Cash only.
The patrons are mostly locals. (You'll feel out of place but foodies don't care.)
Are you feeling adventurous?
A very good place for authentic Bengali food. They have a huge selection of dishes including all kinds of meat, fish, and veggie curries, and different biryanis. The beef tehari here is superb with a well balanced flavor and fiery spiciness. They also provide both South Asian and Western style desserts.
What's worse? Consistently on the low or starting of on the right food and gradually sliding downslope? Unfortunately my experience at PSR was the latter. PSR as I had remember from a couple years back, used to be one of my go-to Indian food places in Jackson heights.
Food 3/5
We ordered our staple early this afternoon:
-beef biryani with lentils: my previous experiences here with their biryanis were a bit on the bland side, hence we tried it lentils this time. Flavor-wise it still lack a few spices, texture-wise too mushy for my preference with rice since they added lentils to this, it tasted like uncle bens and mash potatoes.
-goat curry: highlight of the meal. The same curry I've been craving this past year. However not as spicy as I had remember from the last time I had it.
And the fish curry, our take at being a little adventurous today. Something about this fried fish steak in sweet sauce reminded me of Chinese home cooked food. Came with a complementary lentil soup which was also unmemorable.
Service 2/5
Food was brought to our table promptly since the restaurant was not too busy during lunch.
However my complaint was that they over charged us for rice which was only $2, which they took off the bill after we brought it up. After paying and leaving I realized that there were a total of 6 items on our bill which came out to $34. We only ordered 5 things including a chai tea, so I definitely felt cheated.
All in all, this visit at PSR will likely be my last.
