When you walk in here, you will find yourself staring at the pizza case. You will hear a voice in your head saying, "this stuff looks too good to be true". That voice will be equal parts experience in NYC pizza joints, knowledge of the neighbor, 3 consumed bourbons, and shear intelligence. Each of these factors combining to be all you need when ordering pizza at a certain hour…will be completely ignored as you order 2 amazing looking slices!
Now, upon paying too much, waiting far too long, being annoyed by the customers, workers and yourself for not listening to the voices, you will receive too limp pieces of Sicilian-style pizza (how does that happen?) These slices will be cold, the sauce will be sub-par and the voices in your head will relentlessly mock you.
You will wish you had another bourbon instead.
If you like your dough extra thick and your toppings poured onto the slice as if they were going out of style, this is the place for you. And though the dough is thick, it's not heavy or gross–it's actually pretty light and crispy.
I wouldn't bring out-of-towners here to show them what NY pizza is all about, it's not that sort of place, but if you're in the neighborhood and want a slice, it's a-ok.
Random aside. I sat at a table next to a woman who ordered too much for herself, and told me she had a 6'3" garbage disposal back home — her son — that would take care of any leftovers. I hope he said thank you to his lovely mother.
Not a bad regular $2.50 slice, but certainly not the best. The personal pan pizzas that dominate the displays look interesting, so perhaps you should opt for that instead. And let me know how it goes!
I was starving right before a movie screening and decided to wander down the street. I went into Proto's and ordered a slice of pizza (the topping on top look really fresh, mine had tomato on it, can't remember much else). I thought the pizza dough was really fluffy and light. Definitely hit the spot!
Damn. Fine. Pizza.
The people here are awesome. The pizza was fabulous — perfect crust!!! Got the pizza right when it came out of the oven — heavenly!
This establishment was the perfect finish for a perfect evening. I can't say thank you enough to the wonderful staff for their patience and for that taste-tastic pizza goodness!
Since it's been a while, I can't remember much tails except that I really enjoyed my pizza. I believe I had the broccoli one. It wasn't too oily and the vegetables were crisp. There is a large variety of pizzas to choose from. It's a clean place with a good number of seating. My friend really enjoyed his Sicilian slice.
