Ok so I was using Yelp to find a good seafood place in Astoria and this one was on the top of the list- so I gave it a try. I gotta say the food was pretty good! I do notice there is a difference though in the Italian way of making seafood and the Greek way haha This was my first time trying the Greek way and I really enjoyed it. There's just small differences like the peppers they add into their mixes- but nothing too crazy to throw off the taste of it.
I ended up ordering the Greek combo which consisted of a number of things such as lobster tail, shrimps, baked clams and scallops. I actually don't like scallops so I asked for another baked clams portion which they gladly switched out at no extra charge- so that was cool. I also I had the shrimp cocktail appetizer which was delicious. The waitress we had was cool but tended to forget things we asked for and we had to ask a few times. It happens.
Definitly a good stop in Astoria for seafood!
Wine & Munchies
Super cute place. Our waitress was so sweet.
We ordered:
2 Dozen Blue Point Oysters
Half Dozen Baked Clams
A platter of Scallops & Shrimps
& wine, wine, wine. You can never go wrong w/ wine.
Overall dining experience was good. No complaints.
Psari provides you with unlimited (sorta) garlic bread. The garlic breads were fabulous! The crust is crispy, the garlic sauce is creamy, rich in flavor, and mouth watering. I wish I had garlic breads the whole night!
Besides the complimentary garlic breads, there are other good things to order from Psari. We ordered:
– Mixed Seafood Soup. It came with mussels, fish, and other seafood. It was well made and rich in flavor
– Red Snapper. It was fresh and well made.
– Grilled Octopus. Crispy and yummy.
– Spaghetti with Jumbo Shrimps. Fresh and well made
– Greek Combo. Delicious. This was the plate of the night. It consisted of shrimps, crab legs, lobster tail, scallops and some other seafood. It came with two complimentary sides. The side that we chose was vegetable and lemon potatoes which was fresh and well made.
If I was to come here again I would not order the Spaghetti dish because I was eating a lot of the garlic bread. The breads can be very filling if you eat them in large amount. Also, I was mixing the garlic bread with everything. I mixed the garlic bread with the soup, delish! I mixed the garlic bread with the red snapper, delish! I made a octopus sandwich with the garlic bread, delish! I mixed the garlic bread with the greek combo, even delish! And if you mix the garlic bread with the remaining oil of the dishes, even delish!
Definitely worth coming to this place for seafood and especially for its fresh, hot, and yummy garlic breads!
The 'Ole Greek Captains profile still proudly hangs above the entrance of Psari Restaurant, an Astoria food landmark. Passing underneath, observing the screws connecting the solid wood sign together, on perhaps the windiest day in recent memory, I do wish The Captain will remain standing watch for decades to come over his seafood mecca locals have been coming to for years.
Scoring a table far from the front, blistery winds continued to hammer the vinal and steel foyer –₹₹ outside, as two dozen perfectly shucked Blue Points arrived with Kirnos beer and a sweet and lightly fruity Greek white wine were served up ₹₹— inside. Horseradish & cocktail sauce merely mask the taste of kissing the sea, a quick squeeze of lemon, if any at all, does the trick for me. Furthermore — one can never taste — simply because it doesn't exist — a less than great, freshly shucked oyster on the half shell.
Three huge shrimp or tiny lobsters, all with the same seemingly Spanish name of Langustino were introduced to me and by initial appearance, they were in fact a hybrid. If a shrimp and lobster were to mate, out would pop these spiny crustations. Quite different from Northeastern deep water lobster, I found these Florida looking lobsters to be a stellar shellfish in their own right.
Grilled to perfection on both sides (can't possibly be more than 4.5min & 4.5min per side. Overcooking —- by all outward appearances — appears to have completely disastrous dry and tough consequences) with continual basting of butter and lemon this was a new, unique and memorable dish.
I forked my dining partners Seafood Combo, focusing on what remained which was the founder, broiled in butter, flaky sauce. These delicious fish seemingly remain — unrewarded — the simple and plentiful bottom dweller deserves more respect. It got me thinking — I think I'll begin a movement, a society if you will protesting the unnecessary stuffing of this delightful flat fish.
Why do people do that anyway?
Astoria is a the hub for great Greek food – psari is definitely a gem! It's also open late so that's a big plus because my family is never on time so we always end up getting together late.
This is my second time at this restaurant – and it was wonderful. We ordered sangria (very sweet), Greek salad and calamari to start.
The Greek salad with the garlic bread was amazing, calamari was also a win! I split my meal with my fireman – we ordered the tuna steak and it was absolutely delicious! Like really, amazing! Probably the best tuna steak, super fresh and very tasty.
Seafood here is remarkable – always fresh, never "fishy". Service was also wonderful, super fast and the staff was very sweet and accommodating.
Looking forward to stopping by again!
A friend brought me here for some oysters and drinks. We sat at the bar which had about 6 seats total. The place is nice but too bright for my taste. We ordered oysters and fried cheese. I dont think the oysters were cleaned properly. And the fried cheese was too salty. Overall i would go back to try this place again but I don't think I would go out of my way.
Used a Groupon for 2 dozen oysters and two glasses of wine or champagne. You must order a food item along with it, so my friend and I got two shrimp bisques, fried calamari, and mussels in white wine to split. She got a wine and I got a champagne. I give the shrimp bisque a 5/5 because it was seriously delicious, the calamari a 4/5 (very crunchy and tasty), and the mussels a 3/5 (the white wine somewhat tasteless). Price was okay after the Groupon. Our waitress was pretty friendly too.
Come here for crustaceans; you won't be psari!
My Co-worker brought me here since I was starving and he has been here previously with a Groupon deal for Lobster.
So the Groupon deal was $44.95 for two 1.5 lb Lobster (Broiled or Steamed) along with a Soup ( Fish Soup, Shrimp Biscuit, or Mixed Seafood Soup) or Salad (Greek Salad), a choice of side ( Lemon Potatoes, Baked Potato, French Fries, Greek Potato Chips, Rice or Vegetables), and a cup of Wine or Champagne.
Being greeted by a nice waitress, we inquired if we were allowed to use the Groupon deal today since it was President's Day. She assured us it was okay but since my Coworker didn't buy the Groupon just yet, she insisted that we waited for her to call her Boss to confirm whether we had to buy it or not. After being served some toasty buttery garlic bread in the process of waiting, she informed us that we would still get the deal without having to buy the deal off Groupon. This really didn't make much of a difference for us since we were getting the same deal.
For the Lobster, we both decided to have it broiled since the waitress mentioned that it was already cut open an nicely seasoned. For the soup, she recommended the Fish soup which was basically Salmon with Vegetable soup. Being that I like variation of dishes, I went with the Shrimp Bisque. For the sides, my Co-worker chose steamed Vegetables since he said it was good for his digestion and for me I chose the Greek Potato Chips. We both chose wine for the beverage but one white and one red.
The Fish soup was definitely a better choice since it was more soupy and light. It has bits of carrots and mixed vegetables with chunks of salmon. The Shrimp Bisque is like any other Bisque. It had some pieces of baby shrimp and bits of imitation crab meat. It did have a great flavor but how can you really go wrong with any Bisque?
The Lobster was very flavorful and garlicky. The meat was also chewy and had a sweet taste of freshness. The Lobster was definitely my favorite part of the meal. It was cut right down the middle and it was easy to pry the meat out.
The Vegetable consisted of some steamed carrots, cauliflower and broccoli and cucumber. It was very basic and tasted just right. The Greek potato chips were a bit on the oily side but it was obvious that it was fresh cut potatoes fried sprinkled with some seasoning. My advice for this is to let it sit for a while before you eat it to avoid the soggy texture.
I really would like to give this place 4 stars as opposed to 3 but I wasn't too happy with the service. I felt like the waitress was constantly checking on us too often and giving us a negative vibe as in she wanted us to just eat and leave. It all happened after we decided not to get any appetizers outside of the deal. We decided not to order anything more since we wanted to save some room for dessert. We were not being cheap and we felt like our catering was not appreciated. The waitress or busboy would come right away and ask us of we were done with our food when we were obviously not. After, the 3rd time of this bothersome questioning, I just had it. Even after we got the check, she came over another time to see if we signed the receipt yet. The restaurant was not busy and no one was waiting for our seats. We were not asking for much service either. If this is what you call attentive or friendly service, I beg to differ.
The food was great but the service can really be worked on.
