Pushcart Coffee brings a uniqueness to the area that's definitely needed. With the exception of a few Starbucks locations nearby, this chunk of Rose Hill has no other coffee cafés (unless there's one I'm missing, or you count mywaycup and FIKA on Lex and 23rd). What the atmosphere brings is a downtown vibe perfect for working students and neighborhood residents. (If you're looking for a more chatty, less laptop-centric bar, you'll be hard pressed for a half mile or more.) While the playlist is phenomenal, the staff is semi-punk friendly, and they have a nice variety of pastries, the coffee is lacking. The nodes of the espresso in my cappuccino was drowned by milk, and I found myself seeking caffeination soon after. I'm sure the deviation from an existing company's roast was an attempt to bring authenticity to their own brand but their pulls need some pump.
While this review may seem somewhat directionless, I'd still recommend Pushcart to see if it pleases your palette. At the least you'll be charmed by an environment these blocks are sorely missing. (And perhaps the SVA curriculum books amongst their permenant collection make me positively-biased as I wish they were in business when I was a student….)
I'd been eyeing this place for a while, but since there is a Starbucks literally right around the corner from where I live, I haven't felt inclined to expand my horizons. This weekend, I downloaded the Cups app and was pleased to find out that in addition to Pushcart Coffee being one of the partners, I had one free drink to redeem!
This coffee shop has plenty of natural lighting and seating, which makes for a great place to hunker down to study. Otherwise, with all the windows, it is the perfect place to people watch on a random Sunday morning.
I must give props for the barista who was working there by herself when I was there. Even with the long line of customers waiting to order, she was totally cool and didn't seem flustered at all!
Free wifi and the large, clean bathroom are huge pluses!
Great drinks, variety of milk options, friendly staff, plus outlets and wifi. One of the best cafes in NYC.
We need more of these kind of spots! It's great for having a cup of joe with some friends or a place to study when needed. Heck, even have small group meetings! I simply love this spot! It doesn't get too crowded like the chains of starbucks! Parking may be a bit of a challenge but, do-able after 6pm!
Great place to work. There is a nice big table in the back, lots of outlets and free wifi.
They have almond milk so I was happy!
As for the service…the girl who took my order was kind of rude. I asked what a Cortado was and she gave me a look that really made me feel like I was stupid. She said it meant equal parts espresso and milk. According to coffee-wiki, a cortado "is an espresso "cut" with a small amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity. The ratio of coffee to milk is between 1:1 – 1:2, and the milk is added after the espresso".
The atmosphere was nice inside. Outside was some scaffolding which was not pleasing to the eye, but hey, "It's what's inside that counts", right?
Even though the girl was rude, I am assuming she was having a bad day and I will go back to work there if I am ever in NY again.
This place is packed on a Saturday afternoon. They make the most of their space though and provide plenty of outlets, strong wifi, friendly staff. You've got a great variety of patrons here, although the majority are on laptops. The music is good, not too loud, calming. Then you look over and you see a little budding family, parents and a little baby. Good mix.
The drinks are pretty expensive for what you get… $4 for a very small cup of chai latte. But it's the BEST chai latte I have ever had. So totally worth the splurge in wallet and calories. They also have little noshes – slices of bread cakes, brownies, muffins, croissants, cookies. They also sell coffee beans not surprisingly. All in all cute place, convenient location, good space.
Coffee was decent, but way too expensive. Cashier was very friendly, barista was not so much. And there was no sweet n' low… I'm forever on a quest for sweet n' low…
I come here often for their strong espresso and chill ambience. The girls that work here are nice and friendly. They lose a star for their rude cashier guy…
