  1. Their spicy miso ramen is pretty good. The service is good here. The add ons for a few dollars more is also a great deal. You can add on rice bowls, dumplings, etc. The add ons are a good portion too.

  2. A breakdown of their miso ramen:

Noodles – I like to slurp my noodles, and these noodles weren't that great for slurping.

Miso broth – This type of broth is naturally salty, but this place does a good job in keeping the saltiness at bay. This was the first time I didn't have to drink a gallon of water after eating ramen.

Pork – Slam dunk. The pork was super tender and the highlight of the dish. I only wish they had more than two pieces of pork in a default bowl of ramen.

Overall, pretty good. Although I don't know if it's worth paying a $15 toll to get from NY to NJ for a bowl.

  3. This place is mediocre at best.

I thought the pricing was fair, and appreciated the combo menus. You can get a small katsu curry etc with your choice of ramen for +$3. I mentioned how cold it was to my friend and the temperature went from 0 to 100 real quick. Thank you!!

Sadly, I had the spicy miso ramen with extra pork and could not get over how thick and fatty the spicy miso ramen broth was… I could just feel my arteries clogging and felt like a whale after eating. HOWEVER, I reallyyyyy digged my friend's gyulou ramen. The ball of fresh chopped garlic totally amps up the clear broth to another level. Also tried a bite of chicken karaage, which was way too salty & came with a sweet sauce that just confused me.

I'll probably return to check out their pork buns next time? Or maybe I'll end up at Menya 😛

  4. The original shio ramen is good! I was pleasantly surprised by how clean (yet not bland) it tasted. This was a departure from my regular tonkotsu when I go to ramen places, and it hit the spot. The karaage (deep fried chicken) was tasty as well.

The service was not entirely terrible, but there was only one waitress running the entire place. I was a bit horrified when I saw the waitress, while cleaning up after a large and messy party, mop the floor with a paper towel that then made its way onto a table…and then the tables were only haphazardly wiped. Whatever, the food was good.

  5. The last time I wrote this review was almost four years ago and I'm happy to report that things are seriously different from then. You can basically disregard my last embarassing review because it's no longer relevant. (Also the review is from pre-"ramen boom" so everyone now knows a lot more about ramen since then.) This is a 3 1/2 star rating, rounded up because of improvements over the years.

The charsiu meat has improved; it has the melty texture and actually tastes good! The egg is still awesome.

The one area that Setagaya could still improve is to consider making the broth less salty. Other reviewers seem to agree on this point.

Also, they offer delivery, which is seriously the greatest. This is where I admit my bias comes from because it's pretty nice to have actual Japanese ramen delivery.

I also feel obligated to shout-out the delivery guy — this is random and kind-of hilarious but after he rang the doorbell and kindly handed over the order, I noticed that I had a huge 20 or 30-lb (bulk pet food) box from Amazon at my doorstep. The delivery guy then proceeded to pick up the box and help place it in my house for me. I'M SO SORRY! I definitely wanted to tip him extra for that but it all happened so fast that I just got flabbergasted and became rock-like.

In short, delivery guy, I'm sorry for becoming an useless rock. if you're reading this, just know that you are awesome and I am so sorry that you had to pick up such a heavy box for no reason.

  6. Went for Weekday Lunch Special

Food – 5/5. The shio ramen broth was wonderful! I would say it has a very "clean" taste which doesn't translate well into English but it is a very positive way to describe Asian broths. The chef definitely knows how to handle his starch as both the ramen noodles and the steamed rice had great bites to them. The sauces on both the karaage (fried chicken) and pork teriyaki were delicious and light.

Service – 4/5. Waitstaff was friendly and courteous. Water was refilled without being asked and the check was placed exactly when needed.

Price – 5/5. The lunch special bento box is a great deal! It gives a great variety with four different types of protein, salad and includes the signature dish of the restaurant, shio/shoyu ramen. All that variety for only $10 is a great way for people to enjoy dining out for lunch or trying out many different items at a new restaurant without a high money investment.

    Parking – Street/Municipal Lot (Metered)

  7. My boyfriend and I accidentally stumbled across this place but wow. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much (judging a book by its cover) because it was a bit cluttered in there with advertisements of their dishes fringing at the edges all over the wall. My boyfriend ordered the Spicy Miso Ramen & I ordered the Shio Ramen. We both got the set menu so we were able to add an appetizer for $3 instead of its normal $5.50-$6.00 price tag. I opted for the curry rice & he chose the first dish under the list of appetizers (I forgot what it's called) but it was the appetizer that consists of marinated beef over rice (____ don) hahah I'm sorry. (Will update review as soon as I remember the name)! The broth for both were packed with flavor. The Cha Siu meat was so tender and literally melted in my mouth. The restaurant itself is pretty small and can probably fit about ~20 people at a time.

  8. This review is strictly based on delivery only.

I never ate in the restaurant but have been ordering delivery during lunch at work.
    1. It's a nice treat to be able to get ramen delivered or take out in the area.   But I do notice that since delivery order is only accepted thru seamless, they are priced higher than what's
    advertised as regular menu price.
    2. Ordered miso ramen, spicy miso ramen & few pork buns.  Love that they are mindful enough to pack noodles & broth separately.  You can select additional toppings such as extra pork slices, corn, etc for additional price.
Pork buns are soft and not skimpy.  Meat is soft with slight charing on the surface.  Spicy sauce is just right & tangy.
    3. As complimentary service,  they included a scoop of green tea ice cream but with 3 orders of ramen, we always end up with 1 scoop of ice cream… hum.
Think they want us to play 'paper scissor rock' for it..  lol.
Order is usually delivered in timely manner and quality has been consistent.  May not be the best ramen but definitely not above average compared to most delivery places.
