Rasoi Restaurant

“We did the weekend buffet with one side being vegetarian, and the other side had meat delights.”

“This place is not necessarily high end but, not cafeteria style like some of the places up around here in JSQ.”

“If for some reason you feel like visiting Journal Square, definitely meander back to Newark Avenue.”

  1. Go to indian joint while I live in JC! Decent pricing.   Great portions and flavors. The only thing I wish they did was add more chicken in my Chicken Tikka Masala.

Always ask for extra rice because usually they dont give enough, but its free so thank god! I always order delivery from here and they always come within 30-45 mins.  Also, becareful when you order how spicy because when you say spicy… boy its spicy! I usually order medium because its still a good kick and I have a tolerance about buffalo/siracha status.

    Chicken Biriyani-good
Chicken Tikka Masala (Medium) – Perfect!
    Garlic Naan- to die for
    Basmati Jasmine Rive – delicious
    Mango Lassi – yum yum

  2. Cruising through the semi-urban jungle of Newark Ave., we finally found two parking spots on the street and looked for the closest restaurant. I had heard about Rasoi, so I herded us in. The buffet is reasonably priced ($9.95 for lunch) and there is plenty of food. One downside my coworker noted: there was no meat left in the chicken tikka. When I went back for seconds, there was no naan left. It seems that some of the more popular items disappear too quickly to be refilled. Our waiter was quite attentive in refilling water glasses and even brought me more lemon for mine. The dishes and sauces were delicious – I'm hooked on the "paneer sez." (Szechuan??), and these are about the best gulab jamun I've ever had. There are a few other places nearby (I'm seeing from y'all's reviews that this is in "Little India") so I don't have a comparison point yet, but it would take some effort to outdo Rasoi.

  3. Went there for weekend buffet. Large selection of food.
The food was OK.The service and the ambiance is good, its quite spacious.

  4. Rasoi is the standard. I grew up always eating their food at catered Indian parties or events. There's just no place else I can think of that I've had more in my life.

They have a couple locations around NJ and I wouldn't say this is the best one. But it's the original! And for that, it will always have a special place in my heart. Haha. But yeah, the chicken tikka – always perfect, the malai mutter – a new vegetarian favorite of mine, and the tandoori chicken – a classic!

This is definitely one of my gold standards for Indian restaurants, especially on Newark Ave.

  5. Lot of locals recommend Rasoi as the best Indian in Jersey City.  We decided to give it a try on Saturday night.

We ordered Garlic Naan, Paneer Naan, Aloo Tikki, Chicken Saag, and Rasoi Chicken Special. We thoroughly enjoyed everything.  All of the chicken dishes and Aloo dish were perfectly seasoned and spiced.  The Rasoi chicken special had a fantastic yogurt and butter sauce that had just the right amount of heat and creaminess.  If we had one negative, it was that the naan was a bit greasy, but it was takeout, and had been sitting for a while, I would hope it is better when fresh.

This is clearly the place to eat in Jersey City, and as a result, they said it would be 1 and 1/2 hours for delivery.  Not wanting to wait, we went to pick it up ourselves, which was not a problem, just be warned that you should plan to order early if you are ordering on a Friday or Saturday night.

  6. Long overdue review and my visit was not very memorable. This is apparently like a landmark Indian restaurant in Jersey City, I am not sure why. We needed to eat somewhere as we had come for the Navratri Garba performance on the main street and this was just across the road. The bhangan bharta and nann were good. The staff is super lame and the host has the personality of a five day old puri. If you don't understand Indian food analogy, that means; flat,  and no good. I tell my wife, look at that guy, so rude! She just goes, you expect something different?!

  7. This place was hoppin'!

I came for lunch at 2pm on a Saturday and there was a wait. I take that as a good sign since it is a popular place. We didn't wait long for a table for two so that was nice.

I am very new to Indian food and have only had it a few times in my life, so was happy to get to try just about everything at the lunch buffet! (Note: it was only $12 for lunch buffet and well worth it!)

A bunch of things I ilked and a few things I didn't enjoy so much, but I blame that on being overwhelmed by spices I'm not accustomed too. Overall it was great and I recommend you try a little of everything to see what you like :). Can't go wrong with the Tikki Masala. The Chicken Tandoori was awesome – it was basically a brick oven barbecued chicken on the bone with spices. Really delicious! The basmati rice was cooked to perfection and wasn't plain, it had some flavor even eating it on its own.

The service was excellent. Water was always filled and the plates were always cleared. I would definitely come again!

  8. Rasoi is my favorite Indian restaurant on Newark Avenue. At my old job, we'd go here for special occasions (like for birthdays and goodbye lunches). We would do the lunch buffet, so you can get a little bit of everything. So many delicious dishes at a low price (you definitely get the most bang for your buck here).

Each roll top chafer is labeled, so you clearly know what each dish is and if it is vegetarian or non-veggie, which is extremely helpful if you're eating with people who have dietary restrictions or needs. The sag paneer is really good here and the chutneys are very tasty. Lastly, with the lunch buffet, you can get through the meal within the hour without rushing.

I've also gone here with friends for dinner and ordered off the menu. The food is just as delicious and satisfying. The table service is great and the staff there are friendly and attentive. Once, after we finished with the meal and had walked out of the restaurant, our waiter called after us when he realized I left my gloves on the table. So nice!

It's a great restaurant and I highly recommend it if you are new to dining out in this part of the city.
