I like the Red Oak mainly for lunch. Great lunch specials that you get so much for your money. Breakfast omelettes are ok, if they aren't well done. I'm a huge salad person and I've tried most you can't go wrong there. Just stick to the basics because it isn't always the best. Very inconsistent. It is also a fun place to go after the movies for dessert and coffee. All of us really like to do that as they have good desserts. They do have a liquor license. Service is also iffy, depending on who you get.
There are three sections, well four if you count the counter seating. The main area is mainly booths and some tables and the counter service is in this section. The dinning room is a little newer and feels more like a restaurant than diner, same food and is part of the bar area. Then there is a section beyond that where they have large groups and parties.
They do have take out and delivery service. Food is not great as a take out. However when someone in my family is not feeling well there matzo ball soup is descent. But again those melt in your mouth matzo balls are sometimes hard in the center. You just never know what your gonna get.
5 things New Jersey does right:
1) funny named places (Cheesequake! Hohokus!)
2) corruption
3) horrendous public transit
4) smell funny
5) diners
luckily, Red Oak diner only fulfills requirement #5.
my friend ordered some chips with spinach/artichoke/cheese dip to start off with; the dip was piping hot, filled with vegetable chunks, and delicious.
I was in a breakfast mood, so I ordered up a Mexican omelet (cheese, jalapenos, cilantro, and GODDAMN chorizo), which also came with home fries and toast. got some coffee and a large cranberry juice. the omelet was the size of a brick, and tasty to the core.
friend had a pulled pork sandwich with fries, and two beers. me being me, I sampled some pork – sure enough, tender and delicious. the fries were decent, very potatoey flavor. she informed me to "put a word in on your Yelp review, this place is fucking awesome".
full tab was $36, but we got a ton of food.
this diner is large and has a full bar. menus are new and spiffy, and they even have events here like karaoke, comedy night, and parties.
I'm not in this area often, but if I am, Red Oak Diner is definitely where it's at – and apparently, sometimes with two turntables and a microphone.
Typical diner fare which is good and all, but it's nice that they have a bar – also came here for a family members baby birthday party which was very nicely set up and the variety of food ranged from mediocre (mozz sticks, spaghetti with marinara and caesar salad) to pretty darn good (tomato&mozz salad, greek salad with feta and the fish were tasty) – we wouldn't go out of our way to go there again since it's about a half hour from us but no real complaints (plus we didnt pay for it – ha!)
Ps. They made delicious pitchers of sangria for the party which was definitely MY highlight LOL
Nice that it closes late, especially when you get the mid-night munchies.
Went here for a really late dinner/early breakfast since we were going to wake up at 3am for our 6am flight. It was around 10:30pm on Friday night and the place was hopping! Of all types of crowds: couples, families, friends. Apparently this is the "it" place to be…?
They start you off with these butterly garlic knots -which are seriously the best garlic knots i have eaten in a long whiles. That was the highlight of the meal 🙂
I got the nachos plate (gross because I hate wiz on my nachos….they did not specify wiz on the menu). I will not be ordering this again. My finance got the greek salad, which was tasty.
All in all, decent diner food, just avoid the nachos.
There has to be a mandate in NJ that all towns must have a diner. The eats tuck in nicely as the average diner fare. They have some event nights that are geared more to families with children. They create an atmosphere for sports games. This diner also has some serious realistate. There is a diner, a counter, a sports bar, and a porch all in one place. Finding a seat is a breeze.
Not bad, but not great. Very good waiter. Burgers were largley unspectacular and on the small side for a diner burger. The buns were much bigger!!! They do have a bar here if you are looking for that. As for me, it's not someplace I'd be running to go back to any time soon.
I have to say I was honestly pleasantly surprised. When the family said diner, I said "eh, alright…" I don't think anyone wanted to cook that day because even though they have a huge parking lot, it was all packed! They have a really large well lit space and many tables, just try to beat the crowd when you go. It has been in the neighborhood for 40 years already but the hype has not died down.
The menu crazy long and large. There are Salads, Pasta, Seafood, Entrees, Pizza, Sandwiches (Chicken sandwiches, NY Style Deli, Paninis, Red Oak's Legendary Sandwiches, and Triple Deckers). There's a selection of Burgers, Healthy Choice, Melts, Hot Dogs, Wraps. Like other diners, they serve breakfast around the clock (Benedicts, Global Favorites, Eggs, Omelets, Sandwiches, Pancakes, French Toast, Waffles). There are many drinks like Smoothies and Shakes. There a load of Desserts and a selection on the Kid's Menu. To top it off they even have Comedy and Open Mic Night.
The serve was quick and friendly. Our drinks were never empty.
I have experienced much better in terms of a diner experience. The menu is an odd jumble of hmm and I wish they had …
The waitstaff is surprisingly attractive, in shape, and polite – so that is a plus. The skinny teenage boy and the girls with tattoos in their 20s all were quite pleasant, friendly, and moving as quickly as they could but not getting frazzled at all when the coffee started getting low. One of the girls with tattoos even changed the channel on TV away from the godawful Joel Osteen to ESPN for me on a special request to get that idiotic alien demagogue thing away from me, and if it couldn't, then we would have had to have moved tables.
The food is quite bland and meh at best. It might just be that my tastes are not suited for the place. Overall the place is actually nice even though currently under construction.
This is still a place that I would say you should come try if you like a diner experience out with the family. The food is not the best but they have TVs for ESPN'ing outside of the home and the waitstaff is very good – a small sacrifice the food is not amazing to get the rest of the good things they have to offer.
