Tried this place a third time. Results are the same, underseasoned Indian food that at times panders. It's by all means edible and good for something quick and local. But 9.9 times out of ten I would rather just go to Iselin to get my Indian fix.
I've been coming to this place for many years and still find myself comparing EVERY OTHER Indian restaurant I eat at to this place. The customer service is always top notch and the food is exceptional. I've only ever come here for dinner (I'm not a lunch buffet kinda guy) but it's all I need to give this place 5 stars. This place hammers out incredibly flavored food that is always cooked to perfection EVERY time I eat here and I honestly couldn't ask for anything more.
If you in the area, stop in and give it a shot… If you're not, make the trip because it's totally worth it

Red Pepper was a venture my wife and I stumbled upon randomly on a weekend evening. She was craving Indian (pregnancy), and I love it regardless – so we'd decided to give RP a shot. We'd been trying out a lot of the Indian spots around us, and RP hadn't been attacked yet.
+Ambiance
RP has a very traditional, old-school look to it, which I like a lot. I'm not a big fan of modernized ethnic places for dining – keeping true to its roots does RP well.
+Appetizer
Garlic naan. Absolutely delicious. RP had some great, classic Indian sauces to accompany the naan (my favorite being the sweet, dark-colored dip). Good portion size, and served hot.
+Entree
Lamb Tikka Masala – cooked lamb in a creamy sauce with eastern spices. I ventured away from my usual Lamb Vindaloo to try something different, and I'm glad I did. The creamy sauce was fantastic from RP (almost vodka sauce-ESQUE, a bit sweeter), and the chunks of lamb were well-done. My only complaint was that there wasn't enough lamb! I believe I got about five chunks. The rice was done beautifully – spicy and sweet, hot, and a perfect companion for the cooked lamb. I even ended up dipping the naan in the creamy sauce as well – lovely.
Overall, one of our better local experiences with Indian cuisine. It's close (but not besting) Star of India in Kenilworth, but RP may be a solid #2 in the area.
Having heard consistently good things about Red Pepper, my wife and I decided to give it a try. Neelam. Poojah. You're out!! Red Pepper is in
We spent some enjoyable time going over the menu. Always a good sign when I go into vapor lock because everything looks so damn appealing. But, we narrowed down our choices, placed an order with a friendly fellow who answered the phone, and sped down the hill to Scotch Plains twenty minutes later.
It was a spicy night for me. Medium means hot! Good, great, bring it on. To start, chili bhajia. Whole green chilies stuffed with a spicy mixture and deep fried. Great heat, light batter. Delicious! Spicy goat curry was next. Plenty of tender goat in a great sauce. But what bread did I choose to mop up the sauce? Chili naan of course!! Awesome.
We wife kept the spicy theme going with palak paneer, bayngan bharta and yellow daal tarka. Lots of roti, spicy indian pickle(achar) and some raita to cool things off.
I had a fair amount of the daal and it was outrageously good. My wife loved every spicy flavorful bite of her treats.
Ok, that's enough with the raves. Just go here and enjoy. We'll be back soon.
Red Pepper provides a ridiculously inexpensive ($12) and wonderful lunch buffet.
The Chicken Tikka Masala is so freaking creamy. Seriously — I felt like I was eating pieces of chicken-flavored butter given how each piece just decadently melted in my mouth. Aside from the chicken, they had a bunch of my favorite dishes including Malai Kofta and Paneer Makhani.
Still excellent and very popular at lunch. The vegetable dishes selection is exceptional.I preferred the less crowded days when hot bread was brought individually to the table. To clarify issues raised recently:
Buffet is $9.995 weekdays/$10.95 weekends
I have felt no negative attitude being a single diner at the buffet, although the staff is not as warm as they used to be, now that they are very busy.
They ask individuals at the buffet pay in cash–it is not unusual, much less unlawful, to not accept credit cards below $15, although I wish they did and hope it is not a tax-dodging idea.
They get very little delivery business, so they require the order to be $35 or $40 for free delivery–not unreasonable given that even a big delivery business like Dominos charges for delivery and they do not have a enough volume for a delivery person to make the multiple stops which make small orders practicable.
Star of India has a much nicer staff, but no buffet and the dinner dishes are less varied and less tasty.
I prefer Akbar in Edison, but convenience counts and the buffet is better than Rasoi, although I prefer Rasoi or Moghul at dinner.
Ever since Raghini (other indian restaurant) closed there was not other Indian lunch buffet option. Red pepper is further west on rt. 22 but worth the drive. It's right across from the bowcraft amusement park in the strip mall.
The flavors is mellowed out for the non native tongue. I came here with a large work group and none of us are Indian but everyone loved it. I left full and sleepy.
This restaurant from the outside doesn't look like much and is in a strip mall type deal across from a little carnival.
Once you get inside though, it looks much better.
The food is awesome (5 levels of heat too). The staff is super friendly. The prices are decent. And unlimited rice, which is always awesome.
The menu is quite extensive so there should be something there for everyone!
