Republic Bar

“I like the blend of rustic pizza place with the hip bar areas and DJ booth…and a few dive-y touches, too.”

“The D.J. started spinning old-school hip hop and R&B (which is my fave) so I have to give the atmosphere five thumbs up.”

“I love that they have free valet (please remember to tip good service).”

  1. Very cool spot along the highway. I had the Don Corleon* pizza (topped with pancetta bits, brussel sprouts and done other yummy items) and my friends ordered the meatballs.  Both were very good.  The restaurant has a DJ, bar, unisex bathroom with chalk available to write on the walls. The booths are cozy. I would come back again.

  2. Love, love, love, did I say love this place?!!!  The pizza is fantastic! My favorite is the republic and Kale pizza. But the best part is you can go there and have a relaxing dinner. Then later in the evening enjoy some great tunes from the resident dj. The last couple of weeks they have brought on guests dj's which has been an added treat. The St Thomas margarita is just delicious. I have to give props to Ashley and Stephan for being excellent bartenders. They definitely have the mixology down packed and don't serve shitty drinks like other places. You get your money's worth for both dinner and drinks alike. Plus as I mentioned the great music is an added bonus. Don't change a thing! Only thing to note is some nights when the crowd is mixed they start playing Greek music for what I would consider to be too long. It just kills the mood and folks from other ethnicities that were enjoying top current hits clear out pretty quickly. Before you know it the once packed bar is now all empty. Just a tip to consider that could keep the crowd longer. Will be back to try the Nutella calzone but I always get too full from the pizza. You should note that if you plan to drink, 1 pie can easily be shared by 2 people. I made the mistake to order 1 pie per person the first time and it was too much for us.

  3. This place is different, for lack of a better word.  Miraculously found parking a block away, but they have valet as well. We walk up, get ID'd at the door- to enter a pizza/bar/lounge.  I was here for a birthday.  My friend had a booth, with about 7 people already there.  My hubby and I had to stand,  No biggie, because we were right by the bar.  They have a DJ.  Not bad so far.  I ordered a drink from the drink menu- some sweet iced tea w Ice tea flavored Vodka- no bueno!  Tasted more like juice than anything else.  Then birthday girl points out there's no Stoli- her favorite, now we have a problem. Hubby points out there's no honey jack- his fave, Geez, HELP!! We shared a pizza, don't know which one because the group had ordered it, and it was too loud to ask which one it was, but it was good.  Very mixed crowd- old, young, hipsters, girls dressed like a NYC club. it was a lot going on.  We didn't stay long because bday girl hated it.  The music was getting good as we were leaving.  I would definitely be back again, but order regular drinks, not specials, and try more of their brick oven pizza specialties.  I feel like there's potential here to have a good time- just gotta get the right drinks, lol!

  4. Best music ever! Love the old school hip hop for sure.. Good atmosphere..get the cherry Jackson pizza! Much better than the other things we ordered .. Could've done with out the burnt crust. meh.

  5. Was here celebrating a friend's birthday.  They were nice enough to let us bring in a cake and sing happy birthday…

It's located in Astoria Queens, and for those not familiar with Astoria, parking can be a real challenge.  I love that they have free valet (please remember to tip good service).

There was no cover charge, and I got there around 11.  Security was great; very respectful, they ID everyone, they controlled the people in front (smoking cigarettes), and allowed us to go in and out without a problem.

The place is nice inside… A large bar in the center, with an elevated area in the back that had seating areas and another bar.  We had an entire seating area to ourselves (we were a pretty large crowd).  The waitress was great, very attentive.  Bottle service was normal (they walked it over with the sparklers going, which is always cool), and brought any mixers we wanted.  The DJ was playing good music all night, hip hop & R&B.  The bathroom attendant was nice and had everything you would need…

It loses a star because the place is not that big (not that I would say it's small either), and it was pretty packed that night.  I'm not sure where people would dance as I didn't see a dance floor.  If we didn't have our own area it may have been to packed for me.

I would go back and recommend it to others…

    Happy Yelping 🙂

  6. I came here for my friends bday and this place didn't disappoint. Some people were late so we decided to grab some drinks at the bar while we waited and boy am I glad we did. I love bourbon and had the B.D. White -Resident Artist (black walnut bitters, averna, bourbon) this drink was delicious. It was served perfect with one big ice cube the way bourbon is suppose to be served. When everyone showed up we were taken to one of the booths. I got to try all four appetizers and my top favorite was the meatballs. We ordered 4 pizzas to share for our table of 6, marinara, the republic, nonno gino and cherry Jackson. All four pizzas were good but the tables favorite including myself was the cherry Jackson.
We didn't have any dessert but our dinner experience was excellent. Everyone was very happy and the service was good.

  7. A couple of week's ago I stopped by for the grand opening of one of Astoria's latest newcomers. Republic I thought to myself was oddly placed on the part of Astoria Blvd. that most people don't even think about when they drive by. Nevertheless they propriotors created a new gem of a pizza/bar/lounge that is worth the visit.

I visited a second time this week past and from the Italian inspired menu I ordered a couple of pizzas including one with arugala and with some other stuff on it. I also ordered the meatballs, which are phenomenal. My friends of the feminine persuasion ordered the house drinks that they absolutely loved (and kept ordering). I, on the other hand, ordered a bottle of modestly priced wine from Republic's limited wine selection, the only part of my experience that I could find fault. Methinks having a bit of a broader selection with a couple of up-market choices is not the worst thing to have for a pizza bar.

Our amply tattooed waitress was excellent and on-point. She was very helpful in navigating the menu and was there when we needed and invisible when we didn't.

I will be back and I will keep returning.

  8. Cool spot!

Free valet, which is great for Astoria, parking isn't easy over there!

Bouncers ID'ing everyone, no cover….on a sat around 11ish. Large bar smack in the center of the place, dj is up in the wall, behind some glass so you see him. Large flat screens playing music videos.

They have like a raised level for vip seating, tables, and a small bar, not so much room outside of that. This place was packed! Not so hot, finally a cool place temperature wise….am I the only one always hot?!?!…maybe…LOL My friend had a section with 2 tables, full size tables with a bench on one side and chairs on the other, section overlooks bar in the center of the place and faces the dj and flat screens. If your in this section or the vip section behind us…your good! Otherwise, people looked pretty smushed together…lol

Music was good, mostly hip hop and reggae…..heard a lot of old school hotness! I'm in my early 30's, so not that old school!….lol

Drinks were good 10-12 bucks, not bad. Staff was very friendly, bouncers were cool dudes, shout out to the bathroom attendant, he was on point (they have individual bathrooms, sinks are outside for everyone)

Someone in my group had the pizza and wasn't that impressed, looked pretty good, guess I'll have to try it next time.

Definitely coming back, great low key Saturday night type of spot!
