Richie’s Burger Joint
“Wow, Richie's burgers are a real home run, which is no surprise since Schatzie the Butcher is supplying the meat!”
“I didn't quite like the brisket sandwich though since I don't really like sweet bbq sauce.”
“Forget about Shake Shack, BRGR, 5-Napkin, etc. – none of them hold a candle to this brand new burger joint on the UWS.”

Richie's is probably the best burger joint in a neighborhood with several contenders. What gives it an edge? Well it is in a fucking butcher shop. As you could expect, Richie's grinds its patties to the owner's exact specifications. How do I know that? The owner is always around and he'll tell you. And what a patty it is. It doesn't pretend to be any more than a burger, unlike many top burger places. It's greasy, fatty, and best on the rare side. But the balance they're able to strike with this patty is excellent. I usually like to talk about decor and service when I'm writing reviews on Yelp, but not here. Here the conversation should start (and end) with the patty.
As for the place, it's nothing more than a few tables next to the butcher shop. They have a decent beer selection which is kind of surprising. There's a TV. Otherwise, it's bout what you'd expect albeit on the quiet side which isn't a bad thing. Orders of fries are slightly pricey but are also enough to share between 2 people; I trend towards the sweet potato variety, but the regular are very good too. They have a few extra sauces (herb mayo, chipotle mayo, and a honey mustard that's buffalo-like) that are worth asking for with the fries. I always order my burger with bleu cheese and onions as that's my ideal combo; I wish it wasn't an extra $3.50 to do this but I don't mind given how good this is. Rest of the menu looks good and they seem to have great specials (buy one burger get one free Tues/Wed nights), but I haven't gotten that far. Also, order the burger rare or medium rare. Or at least don't be a dick and make them turn it into a hockey puck.
When you open up a burger shop in a butcher shop, how can you go wrong?
Nestled into the same space as Schatzie's, this place is no frills and makes delicious food. I've had the Schatzie Burger, their fries, their salads, and their brisket sandwich. All are winners! The Schatzie Burger itself is your basic patty / onion / lettuce / tomato, and I always get some cheddar melted onto it. It's huge, so be prepared to flatten it or unhinge your jaw. My only complaint would be the buns; they're good, but no my favorite, erring a tad on the drier side than the chewy side. Still, it would not stop me (and has not stopped me) from getting my grub on here repeatedly.
The owners are too cool, and Schatzie himself is a riot. A few days before the elections, Ted Cruz was talking on MSNBC on a televised town hall meeting, and about five minutes in, he mutes it and and is like, "Yeah, nuts to that." (I paraphrase.) Then he started talking to some customers about the election. I found this to be so thoroughly amusing. Ha! I love customer interaction like that.
Can't wait for some more Schatzie Burgers in the future! This place is solid.
There are so many burgers in NYC. The burger here is alright. The patty has a nice meaty but under seasoned. They are good at cooking the burger to the right temperature even a little lower than desired. The garlic sauce is good.
