Roast Kitchen

“A spin off healthier version of chipotle where I get a couple of vegatables steamed with rice or quinoa and many options of a protein.”

“My go to is the ginger bowl with spicy chicken.”

“Roast Kitchen is a solid contributor to the lunch scene in Times Square – but probably not a daily option like Dig Inn due to its price point.”

  1. This place is kinda strange.

I ordered the In Season Hot Bowl with creamed spinach and all I literally got was a pound of quinoa and 1/2 pound of creamed spinach. But… but… What about the spicy walnut, goat cheese, and mixed greens??? How could I only got 3 of each? Literally, three, when they're actually main ingredients? o_o

Anyways, with the taste and imbalanced portions, I give them place 1 star.

  2. Very convenient spot for those working around the area and quite healthy for you too, but it's way too overpriced for a bowl of quinoa, veges, and a protein. It's basically, as my other fellow reviewers have pointed out, a healthier American version of Chipotle. There are better options around.

  3. So I really love Roast Kitchen down in Fidi and at Union Sq, but there is something off with this location. There's usually not enough staff and the food doesn't look as appetizing as the other ones. The taste is about the same though, though the pork isn't cooked as well.

I usually get: House mix + Rice + cauliflower, red peppers, broccoli, brussel sprouts + red curry  + pork.

  4. This is a very healthy eating option in NYC, the prices aren't that great and that's why I don't go here as often as I'd like but the options are plentiful and the employees tailor your order how ever you want.

If you're going around lunch time, do yourself a favor and go a little earlier around 11 AM because the lines will kill you.  I stood in line for nearly 40 minutes and then another 10 minutes just to get my food. By the time I got my food I barely had time to eat it and that was annoying.

I will say that the food is well prepared and tastes delicious. I had a rice bowl with shrimp and a bunch of cooked toppings, I usually don't get full so quickly but I was very satisfied. A friend of mine always goes here and never has a complaint.

I would recommend that this place figure out a different system to handle their orders and they should offer a yelp deal as their prices aren't that great.

  5. The concept of salad at this bar is greens with well roasted meat and veggies and heated up in a pan in sauce. I went in for a quick lunch. Delicious! Quick service. Great for a quick lunch. Small portions for the price.

  6. Been here about 5 times and I always get the same thing: warm ginger bowl (mixed kale, basmati rice, roasted corn, scallions, sesame seeds, bean sprouts and ginger scallion sauce. I get it with the shio Koji marinated pork. So good!
The lines get crazy here at lunchtime but it does move pretty fast. It can be a bit overwhelming your first time here so study the menu before coming. When the lines are long they have a girl walk through the line and take everyone's order. After coming here twice she already remembers my name and order each time. By the time you reach your turn at the front of the line, your order is waiting. They've always gotten mine right although I did see them mess someone's order once so check before you go.
One day I'll try the other things on the menu.

  7. The healthy chick's Chipotle upgrade.  It's ok.  I can see why some people like this place so much because the ingredients are top quality.  You can see the meats roasting, all are super fresh and flavorful.  The one gripe I have: portion sizes.  I think this is slightly overpriced for the amount of food you get – about $12 a bowl.  While the food is great, I left still hungry.

  8. My mom and I stopped in here on our way to an evening show. We needed a quick dinner, so many of the Times Square restaurants were out of the question. We also wanted something relatively healthy, or at least not fast food. Found this  gem on the Yelp app, and we're glad we did!

We both ended up ordering the Spiked Caesar Fresh Bowl. Mom ordered hers with the Herb Chicken, and I was going to do so as well, but Mom got that last of that for the time period. I ordered the Spicy Chicken instead, which ended up being a good alternative. Both versions were very tasty, and plenty filling before heading over to the show.

The staff were efficient. Not particularly warm and friendly, but also not standoffish or churlish. Other than that, the only complaint I had, and the primary reason for my only giving three stars, was the lack of seating available. I get that it's NYC, and real estate is at a premium. They did offer some, but given that it was later in the evening (7PM), I would have expected some seating options. As it was, we ate standing at the counter near the door. Not a terrible experience for me, as I actually like standing, but I know my mom was a little less than comfortable.

All in all, definitely will keep it in mind for future trips to the theater district. Especially in nice weather, where we could have carried out and gone to sit somewhere in Times Square.
