Stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch and Scott the GM struck up a nice conversation with me. This place – and the Harvest Group as a whole for that matter – stays true to its commitment to customer service. It's the little things that makes this Group stand out above their competition. It's the phone calls the day after your first time dining with them to ask about your experience. It's the post cards they send you in the mail, thanking you for your business. It's the complimentary dessert they send to your table on your birthday or anniversary without even asking for it or reminding them you're celebrating a special occasion.
This Root's is the 3rd one they opened (the original in Summit, the other in Morristown). I think this one is by far the largest but definitely shares the same theme as the other two. Very classy ambiance and professional staff.
I went with the butternut squash soup and the burger and fries. Ordered a beer and my entire bill only came to $22. Very reasonable for a place as nice as this.
The Huntley Taverne remains my favorite restaurant in the Harvest Group but Roots comes in at a close second.
I have always really liked all the Harvest restaurants – they do things the right way.
I think I've been to each and every one.
I have always loved Roots – been to each location.
Service is always top notch.
Food is always amazing.
We started with the cold seafood sampler. Crabmeat/oysters/lobster tail & claw/tuna tar tar/shrimp (OMG I could eat this every day)
Then we both had the WET aged cowboy steak. I normally get very rare but with the wet aged I chose rare (was perfect)
Outside was charred and crunchy with light seasoning. Inside was sheer heaven. The cut is more fatty (fine with me) but I did find some bits hard to cut because of sinew or gristle or what ever it was.
I'm sure if I had brought it to the waitstaff's attention, they would have made me a new one.
Sides were heavenly. Spinach with garlic/Asparagus/Potato & onions
We finished it off with some chocolate molten lava thing a ma bob.
All in all the bill came to about $225 with a bottle of wine.
It's not a cheap night but it's always a night to remember 🙂
The steakhouse: bane of a vegetarian's existence.
But thankfully, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Roots.
Atmosphere is fancy without being too bougie. This place is way bigger than it seems; we sat in a back room, but apparently there's a back room after the back room. Reservations needed? Maybe not.
We started off with some specialty cocktails. My favorite was their spicy margarita which had a nice kick without being too overpowering.
Obviously not a lot of animal-free options on the menu, so I ordered 4 sides as a meal: mashed potatoes, corn salad, wild mushrooms and sautéed broccoli. Everything was very flavorful and well cooked. Thumbs up!
Service was exemplary. We were constantly checked on by multiple people. Very professional atmosphere. You might wanna dress up a bit.
Altogether a great experience. Will I be returning? Mmm, probably not. But would I recommend? Definitely!
Came here for lunch with the family on a Saturday afternoon. We had a great experience. The service was excellent. We had all of our needs taken care of and the waiter was very nice. We were also greeted by the manager and the chef. The food was very tasty. I had the shrimp cocktail appetizer to start. The shrimp were so big and cooked perfectly. Then I had the lobster roll. It was perfect. To finish my meal for dessert I had the blueberry butter cake with whip cream. Very yummy and moist. The only small complaint was the popover that was served at the start was not very good. It was still raw dough and mostly hollow.
Will probably go back for food at some point later, at least lunch. Somehow, this place reserves parking spots next to them, taking up valuable room for the several other restaurants on the block for valet, as they are charging more for their restaurant than the cheap prices found on the street.
The sign magically disappears by the next day and reappears during dinner time, around 5. I guess they don't want other businesses or certain ahem people noticing.
I have no clue whether this is legal (and I doubt it is) but this is quite annoying, especially in Ridgewood where it is quite hard to park to begin with. The guy explaining to us that it was valet parking was also quite annoyed as we didn't realize this and seemed to be a bit very snooty.
As I personally have not been here yet, I'm noting this review with the closest to the average this place currently has, 3.3 so 3 *s.
I'm happy they got rid of Blend though so there is that.
I came here after a spa day with my friend. We decided it was Saturday and why not?!
We arrived without a reservation around 6. It was early and not too crowded.
Our waiter was pretty great, he was jovial, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about the menu.
We ordered oysters, oyster Rockefeller, the shrimp appetizer, and the salmon as our main course.
Everything was really great. The salmon was well cooked but the risotto it came with was phenomenal. The shrimp scampi had this delicious sauce, that made the dish.
The only down side were the bacon Brussel sprouts. They were undercooked and WAY too salty! I have a salty palate but they definitely could have relied on the bacon for salt. I would skip those next time.
We had a glass of Malbec and then a couple glasses of Cabernet.
Lastly to finish, we had the butter cake. It was good, not amazing but very good. Not sure if it's worth the calories for the cake though! I'd rather some more risotto!!
The set-up: you're in the nicer part of Bergen County for one of your kid's first wrestling matches but it's your other son that ends up having a bad accident and you make your way to the ER and you try to comfort him with promises of being able to have any treat he wants. You're assuming he'll want a Blizzard from Dairy Queen but he's adamant with, "Steak!". You jump on Yelp and there's two places to pick from and you go with the better rated one and once again… Yelp rules.
This place is pretty nice and a wee bit more swankier than we're used to. (Case in point: the week before we were at a LongHorn's down South Jersey!)
So when we walk in… two of us are covered in dry blood, one is wearing flip-flops, one is wearing a baseball cap, one is wearing a Rheinhold t-shirt (that white trash move would be me!)… we weren't expecting to go out and we were afraid we'd be turned away at the door. But no – everyone couldn't be nicer. (Although I wouldn't have blamed them if they feared we looked like a motley crew that would dine -n- dash.)
Killer steak (even their own steak sauce had a nice tang and slight burn in the back of your throat – not sugary and cloying), amazing pomme frites, damn good side of mushrooms, a really tasty Asian-flavored salmon dish and the pinot noir we had was delicious.
Would a run to DQ been a whole lot cheaper? Yup. But it was our first time to the ER for stitches (although I fear not our last – as another parent quipped, "Boys and blood… they just go together!") – so the meal should be as memorable as the event that preceded it, right?
Roots has become seriously flawed. Several weeks I posted a poor review of the Summit location because of cheap, grisly beef served and as always Roots managers monitored Yelp and called me to apologize. In addition he graciously sent me a substantial gift card to try it again. Note I've spent well over 2500 at at Roots over several years). However when I used it last evening in Ridgewood it was a repeat with additional problems. I ordered the smoked lamp chops and when asked how I'd like them I told the server "rare" to which he replied "excellent – the perfect way". Apparently a robotic response they may require inexperience waiters to way because when the chops came out of the kitchen they were completely well done. When I brought this to his attention he proceeded to teach me that because they were smoked they only look that way. When I pressed the issue he claimed rare isn't possible. Well that is total horseshit and I asked for the manager who was courteous and tried to teach me again. When I objected he offered to replace with unsmoked chops – which he did. They were rare all right, but these were hacked up chops which looked like an angry Isis butcher prepared. Truly roughly chopped up chunks of lamb – as it they were butchers floors scraps. And it took a surgeons skill to slice off the meat from the deep grissil and bones. Unbelievable. Clearly the finance office is running the show at Roots. Perhaps ownership should let those making these cheap buying decisions to deal with disappointed customers like me. However they won't have this one to deal with for I am totally done with Roots once and for all. A sad turn of events for what was once a reputable steak house.
