VERY IMPORTANT disclaimer: the guacamole is freshly made. It's just not made in front you in a cart that's being pushed around due to space limitations here. But the guys is making it fresh at the station next to stairs in the back, and I honestly think among all the Rosa Mexicano locations I've being to, this one has the best guacamole. Sure it's not cheap, but if you want cheap guac, go down one block and there's a Chipotle.
Anyways, four of us came here on a Saturday night around 7pm. It wasn't too crazy, but there's definitely decent amount of people. We got some tequila flights, chips and guacamole, I had the shrimp entrée that I always get at Rosa Mexicano, and my husband got some short rib. Once again, guac was fresh and delicious, we got it spicy and I wish it were slightly spicier. It's also definitely NOT pre-made because I saw the guy making it in the back. My shrimps came perfectly cooked, as always. My husband's short rib was tender and fell right off the bones. And it was HUGE portions.
I don't know why this place has so low ratings, I actually prefer this to the other Rosa Mexicano locations because it felt a little more intimate. The food was great and services was attentive. Another bonus, Masa Y Agave is open next door, it's basically the same menu in terms of food, but maybe more drinks. We went there after dinner to grab more drinks, some churros and flan. If you are there, definitely try their flan as dessert, it's light and not overly sweet, but so so good.
I will definitely be back when I'm in the neighborhood!
Rosa Mexicano in Tribeca is an unusual addition to the family. The space is not as expansive and lofty as one might expect in the neighborhood, and is certainly smaller than the Union Square location, which is the one that the Rosa name conjures up for me.
No surprises in the menu. The guacamole is not prepared by your table, which makes it seem not-so-fresh. The food is comparable to what you find at the other locations–tasty but unremarkable. I did however learn about "nixtamalization", something I should have known sooner, as a fan of all things corn.
This location is complemented by a separate bar downstairs–Masa y Agave. The bar does not take reservations. But the space has several tables, and is much more inviting than the restaurant area upstairs, and lends itself to conversation and relaxing. The food and drinks menu also seem accessible from the bar. A very clever set-up to not discourage potential patrons who are put off by the noisy scene at the restaurant?
